trying to make friends who are obsessed with the same ships as you
Pretty iconic of Patrick Page to drop this literary analysis out of nowhere
Needlessly obsessed with the fact that we have such a specific given time for The Hunchback of Notre Dame (January 6th, 1482) when we don’t have that for many other Disney films, it gives it an interesting kind of historical fiction element
The wars that Phoebus returns home from are (possibly?) the Burgundian Wars and the War of the Burgundian Succession. Although he remarks “You leave town for a couple of decades and they change everything” so he may have fought in some earlier wars too
Also, Esmeralda’s line that “I bet the king himself doesn’t have a view like this” makes me wonder… where’s the king during all of this? Probably off fighting the Habsburgs?
Ok but imagine a scenario where one of Louis XI’s messengers tells him about Frollo burning down Paris and he’s like “he did WHAT to my city?!”

I feel like we don’t talk about this scene enough in terms of the light it sheds on Kuvira and Suyin’s relationship dynamic. Things have obviously escalated so highly is Su’s mind that she will kill Kuvira instead of let her take Zaofu. She state her plan here to “take her out”; Baatar Sr. says in the previous episode that she is going to “put an end to this”. Even for Suyin, that’s pretty cold. Kuvira was “like a daughter” to her–however you interpret that, they obviously had a close relationship before this. But what strikes me the most about this encounter is that Kuvira anticipates Suyin’s move. Kuvira has threatened Suyin to the point where Suyin feels killing is justified, and Kuvira knows this and counterstrikes accordingly. From what Suyin says in “Enemy at the Gates”, their relationship was perfectly fine until Suyin started going against what Kuvira considers to be right. Then “a rift” occurs between them and Kuvira leaves Zaofu because she believes this isolation become dangerous to the rest of the world–not only does Su refuse to help the Earth Kingdom herself, but she forbids Kuvira, Baatar and the guard from leaving of their own volition. Suyin is so vehemently opposed to any form of dissent that she a) actively prevents them from leaving b) tries on multiple occasions to get Korra to destroy Kuvira and c) eventually tries to kill Kuvira when she is immediately threatened. And Kuvira understands and accepts this! It seems that before this rift occurred between them, Kuvira and Suyin were on good terms with one another as long as Kuvira didn’t disagree with Su. As soon as Kuvira goes against Su’s wishes, Su is out for blood. And it’s important to recognize that Suyin only reacts this way to Kuvira–in Baatar’s case, he can’t be held responsible for his actions because Kuvira “brainwashed” him. The fact that Kuvira is given all of the blame in Suyin’s mind to the point where Suyin can justify killing her is pretty messed up. It seems that everything between Su and Kuvira was fine until Kuvira disagreed with Su, which justified murder in Su’s mind. It’s more like an Ozai/Zuko dynamic than a close teacher/student one.
Not to mention that Suyin really demonstrates her lack of knowledge about Kuvira’s efforts in this scene. It’s a common theme throughout the season that Suyin ignores the good Kuvira has done for the Earth Kingdom brought on by her inaction. She gets it half right in the beginning: from what we’ve seen of Kuvira’s methods, at least part of her army is probably conscripted like the bandits we saw in “After All These Years”. However, her assertion that “if we take her out, they’ll have no reason to fight” is never corroborated by anything we see of Kuvira’s army. In fact, from everything we see of her interaction as an empress, Kuvira commands total loyalty and respect from her soldiers. They cheer for her excitedly during “Battle of Zaofu”, they organize a rescue party to find her in “The Final Stand”, and after the speech she gives in “Kuvira’s Gambit” they all take up the “All hail the Great Uniter!” chant. The idea that the entire army would just disband and go away unaffected by Kuvira’s assassination is ludicrous and suggests that Suyin has a warped idea of what Kuvira has accomplished. She refuses to believe that Kuvira has done anything good for the Earth Kingdom and perhaps uses this as justification for her assassination attempt. This also goes along with Kuvira’s assertion that Suyin is a “coward”. Kuvira is obviously fully aware of Suyin’s motives (having anticipated Su’s reaction). What I get from Kuvira’s speech is that she considers Suyin to be afraid of power, and indeed she really seems to be serious about not wanting to spread the ideology that built Zaofu around the Earth Kingdom. However, she takes any mention that Kuvira uses tyrannical methods and blow this up to undermine Kuvira’s entire operation. This would explain where she got these far-fetched ideas that Kuvira has simply terrorized her army into following her: instead of accepting that although Kuvira “betrayed” her to get where she is, she did ultimately provide support and unification to a nation that was torn apart.
Finally, Suyin’s double standard when dealing with Kuvira and Baatar is more obvious here. Suyin makes the point of saying, “She’s alone in there. Now’s our chance!” before she attacks. To me this indicates that Suyin deliberately planned to wait until Kuvira was by herself (specifically, not with Baatar), because she refuses to believe they are guilty of the same crimes. This goes along with her treatment of Baatar and Kuvira at the end of Book 4—she’s more lenient towards Baatar although he is just as capable as Kuvira of acting of his own volition. Su ignores this and instead talks about how Kuvira “brainwashed” Baatar when he obviously left of his own choosing. Suyin extends her desire to scapegoat Kuvira for everything to Baatar, even refusing to listen to Baatar’s reasons for why he left. “Why? So I can go back to living in your shadow?” To which Suyin replies: “Don’t say that! Can’t you see she’s brainwashed you?” Baatar explicitly articulates his reasons for leaving Zaofu and Su ultimately brushes it off on the premise that his mindset is part of Kuvira’s “evil influence”. She doesn’t even consider his claim to be valid–“Don’t say that!” Apparently voicing any opposition to what she perceives as a perfect family is totally impossible in her mind to the point where Baatar must be brainwashed to have any feeling of inferiority or negativity about it. This might also be due to Aiwei’s betrayal in Book 3–before, she was able to use him to identify any form of dissent or discomfort about Zaofu and her family. Now, however, she doesn’t have that power and apparently just pretends that Kuvira, being the first to dissent against her, is the source of all that has gone wrong since. In this scene Kuvira confronts Suyin about all her misjudgments. As her protégé, Kuvira sees something different in Su. While the viewers are shown Su’s decision to not take power and condemn Kuvira for her actions as coming from a place of morality, Kuvira recognizes it as an act of cowardice from a mentor who would try to assassinate her rather than watch her dismantle the system Su feels the need to protect at all costs.
On Kuvira and Suyin’s Relationship
During Book 4, one of the biggest mysteries to me was Kuvira and Suyin’s relationship. Suyin gave a very brief explanation of it in 4x05, but it does account for a few things. For instance, if Kuvira’s “motivation” to stabilize the Earth Kingdom stemmed from her feelings of vulnerability as a result of being an orphan, then was Suyin’s act of “taking her in” at 8 not really on par with being adopted and cared for? When Suyin said “like a daughter,” was there still a clear line being drawn between her actual kids and Kuvira?
This is my attempt to unpack a really complicated dynamic.
