waves

I remember in waves 

I won’t think about something for a while, and then suddenly 

it’ll come rushing back 

to punch me in the stomach 

like memories of the day 

we went hiking in the hot sun 

and ran through the hills even though we couldn’t breathe 

holding hands even though we were sweating 

I was sticky and gross but you still kissed my skin 

near my shoulders and chin 

at the end, drenched with sweat in the back of the van 

I fell asleep on your shoulder going home 

I slept on your shoulder a lot 

then when we got home 

falling asleep on the bed in the basement 

tired and dusty and content 

in each other’s arms 

what  strange feeling 

I’d never felt before 

I don’t know if I’ll ever feel again
