Visitation|| Isabella and Matt
overtureofchaosâ:
Isabella grew up to be a strong young woman. She was taught how to hold her own but the years spent in America softened her. Sometimes, in the beginning, she would purposefully fight with Matt just to feel alive. She was only 17 when he brought her to Texas and now at 24, the only existence Isabella had was the strange relationships formed with members of the CIA. Gemma was a trooper and had truly become a friend but sometimes Isabella longed for something that felt more normal. What was is like doing your own shopping? Voting? Dating? Even her online relationships suffered because there was no way in hell her communications werenât being monitored.
Some days Isabella wondered how she was doing so well in her classes but on the other side of that coin, she had nothing better to do than succeed. Honestly, she hoped if she graduated with honors they would let her walk or at least go out to celebrate. It would be a shining moment to leave the house without a bag over her head. Or perhaps they would offer her a job and she could work side by side with the only friends she had left in the world. She knew Matt was right and that just frustrated her more. Not once had she found a lick of evidence that Alejandro was still alive.
âI donât have any,â she pouted. Though happy to hear Steven and Rennie were okay, it did not feel like enough. Standing up she kicked off her flip flops, pulled off the oversized tee she was wearing and dove into the pool. The water was cold but she needed the distraction. Sometimes when Matt showed up it made her want to cry. He was a constant reminder of the life she would never be allowed to have. Hanging on the edge of the pool she cleared her throat, voice still cracking from her emotions despite the effort. âIt does not mean I am going to stop looking. What do you care about my heart anyway? I am a mission for you. If I no longer served a purpose to you I think you would stop coming to see me. Hell, you might even hand me over to my fatherâs enemies.â
That was too far and she knew it. Dunking herself under the water again she decided it was time to be nice. Matt had shown his temper a time or two though not usually directed at her. Isabella was pushing him this time and it wasnât right. They were both stuck in a manner of speaking. She slowly walked out of the pool and grabbed a towel trying not to drip on him. Her voice altered now from guilt, âThat wasnât fair and I apologize. I know if you wanted me dead, Matt, you would have left me in the Mexican desert. I am grateful. Some days I just feel like I am going mad. I want more than what is behind these walls. I want to eat rich food and dance. Feel,â she paused. The truth was she wanted to feel a manâs hands on her but she would never say that to him. âI want to feel anything other than these walls. I am going bonkers.â

If Alejandro were alive Matt knew he would be proud of the young woman before him. She was strong, tough, and despite all the shit that had happened she still managed to smile and thrive in this cursed world. Still a kid when he took her from Mexico and put her into protection he knew that despite a certain innocence there was a fighter inside as well. It was the same thing he saw in Gemma when they were first introduced and probably why he had special requested the woman to care for Isabella. He knew Gemma would be able to cultivate the strength he knew Isabella had. It was nice to see the friendship between the two and he hoped it gave the young girl some comfort considering they had ripped her from her life.
Matt still harbored immense guilt for the entire situation. Not only had they kidnapped her, they had almost gotten her killed. Worse, the person she did trust was killed and yet the woman still clung to hope. Matt wished he could as well, wished he could prove to her she was right. Unfortunately he didn't have the luxury of believing in those things, and maybe a little harshly that was what caused him to try and squash it in her, despite knowing how unfair that was. He knew it couldn't be easy living the way she was, basically on lock down, but from what he heard of the things Carlos Reyes was up to in her absence part of him couldn't help but wonder if maybe he did really save the girl. The man was a monster before, calling the order to kill Alejandro's family, and that kept his hands clean. What Matt heard of when he didn't keep clean was enough to turn even the most seasoned of agent's stomachs. At some point, though he would never say this out loud Matt would find Carlos and kill him. It wasn't just for Isabella and her freedom it was for Alejandro. Maybe killing Reyes would give the man peace in death, because Matt couldn't help but doubt he had that in the afterlife.
Brought out of his thoughts by the small barrel of fire in front of him he had to bite back a smirk at her pout. He wasn't happy he caused it or the reason for it, but maybe they could finally stop having this damn argument. Watching her from his seat he knew a tantrum was imminent and he sighed, waiting for the hailstorm. At least she tried to stop by going into the pool, or maybe that was the catalyst, he couldn't tell with her. Taken aback by her words he found his hands clenching into fists and he had force them open. "Is that what you think? You're a fucking mission?" Anger already stirring in his gut, his eyes opened wide in surprise at her final words. "Whoa there chica," he said as calmly as he could muster. "You aren't a fucking mission. I defied orders for you, and no fucking way would I fucking turn my back on that. You meant something to Alejandro so you mean something to me. Yeah maybe I don't show it, yeah maybe I'm an asshole but fuck that if you think that I'm just using you and then throw you to the wolves. That's fucking a low blow."
Glad for the chance to breathe when she dunked again, he took a few short breaths, his eyes still narrowed in anger as her head came up. Maybe he should spar with her he thought fleetingly. Clearing his throat he arched a brow, "Yeah, I would have." Was all he could bite out. Sighing he ran his hand down his face. "Look, I know it can't be easy, and I know I can't possibly understand how bad it is for you here, or how crazy it makes you. I wish I could give you those things, but right now it's too dangerous." Glancing back at the house he saw  Gemma was distracted and he motioned for her to sit. "I didn't say this, and you don't know this, but the CIA is getting closer to a break through. One that would mean freedom for you, or at least more freedom. It would probably be witness protection with a new name but you'd be able to get out and do those things. I can't tell you more, but I'm asking for a little bit more time. Soon your father won't be such a powerhouse and when that happens, you'll get what you wish." Reaching over he patted her knee, "Please trust me ok?"
Fuck it all. Fuck them all.

The small unassuming home Isabella now lives in. Initially she was in something a little less impressive. Over the years, Isabella grew weary of her surroundings and insisted that if she were going to be living in protective custody she needed a swimming pool. After multiple arguments and a few visits where she absolutely refused to speak with Matt, he had her moved to a nicer location.

Visitation|| Isabella and Matt
overtureofchaosâ:
Isabella Reyes did not mind living in the United States. There were plenty of days she missed parts of her life back in Mexico, but those moments were few and far between. Her journey to this point in her life was filled with tragedy and so eye-opening she knew she could never go back. In fact, if Isabella ever had the opportunity to tell her father how disgusted she was by the life he led she would do it in a heartbeat.
Over the past five years, she could have contacted him. The girl knew her fatherâs phone number and his email address. Mexico was not the third world - just scary. The real Mexico. The parts her fathered owned. Nowadays it would appear that Carlos Reyes owned plenty of things to keep him in power. But Isabella knew just as equally that talking to her father would get the people she now cared about killed. Alejandro was already gone and had it not been for him she would be dead as well.
This fact did not stop her from hoping that he was alive though it seemed to piss off her guardian angel. Matt Graver was that so-called angel. Over the past five years, sheâd seen him at least once a month. One year at Christmas he flew her to New York to see the tree lighting but that never happened again so she would go online and watch it. The U.S. Government decided they should pay for her education given every visit from Matt meant another folder full of pictures to look at and more faces to identify. The routine was getting old. Isabella liked her primary guard Gemma - it helped she spoke Spanish fluently. She liked the visits from Matt but it was a mundane routine that frequently found her bored so she would surf in the hopes of discovering anything to prove Alejandro Gillick did not die in the desert that day she became an American.
She could hear Mattâs voice before he exited the small house that had become her home. Every visit was the same. When he showered her with compliments about her testing, Isabella could not help but think something very wrong had taken place. âWhat is up, Matt? You never come bearing compliments only pictures. Yet I do not see the folder. Did you leave it inside? Is the heat too much?â Her accent was still thick despite the years spent in his country. Flecks of grey covered his head now and she thought for a moment it looked good on him. She was twenty-four now and had never known a man or anything of real social life since leaving her home country. If she had to look at a man, he would do.
âPlease tell me, are Steven and Rennie okay? They were not hurt on your recent assignment?â She figured if she kept the conversation steering in an alternate direction he would forget that she searched yet again for Gillick. The speech was always the same but Isabella felt in her gut that he was still alive.

Five years ago Matt had set out on a seemingly normal mission, seemingly being the operative word. It was similar to his days overseas, the only difference was the players. He was supposed to start a war between two cartels and then step back while they tore each other apart. It was all part of a greater plan, and as always he took his orders and played his part. Matt followed the rules, loose as they might seem to some, took his orders and kept moving. All of that changed five years ago when everything he fought for, everything he believed was called into question and what was once a solid foundation was now quicksand.
Someone he valued deeply, dare he say a friend, was killed and if that weren't enough to anger him the worst part was that he might have had to do it. He was still working for the CIA, but now every mission seemed like a bitter pill to swallow. He supposed it was why he had given the biggest Fuck You to his job that he possibly could when he brought Isabella back to the United States and placed her in protective custody. His boss was far from happy about that but now that he had the girl on US soil he knew her hands were tied. Matt had to admit this brought him more than a little bit of pleasure and satisfaction. It was also the only way he knew how to honor his friendship with Alejandro and mourn his friend. The man had put his life on the line for Isabella, and in return Matt would keep her safe. After all it was the very least he could do.Â
When Gemma called to tell him that Isabella was once again looking for Alejandro it opened up all those old wounds and hurts. It pained him that she would do something that would only bring her continued pain. For Matt it was like continuing to pull a scab off, never letting the wound heal. He tried his best to give Isabella a good life in the US, to pull her away from this dream that was simply never going to be a reality, but time and again she continued to cause herself pain. He couldn't bring himself to let that hope in, he had seen the man dead, there was no coming back and that was the end of it.
Bringing her to US soil had cost him though, and part of his punishment for disobeying orders and tying their hands was bringing a folder every month and forcing Isabella to name faces and places. If the US was going to take care of her she would pay them back with her knowledge. Matt hated doing it, it wasn't that he didn't like seeing the little Spanish spit fire, it was more that he felt the government never wanted her to forget she was the daughter of a cartel leader and would not be more. Which was confusing since the government also paid for her education. Matt guess that had more to do with making themselves look good, and charitable than anything else. Considering the cluster fuck of trying to start this war they did indeed have a lot to make up for.Â
Letting out a deep laugh he sighed, and gave a shake of his head. "Wow, I sound like an asshole. I mean I am, but still. All I do is come here and make you work, and shit do I never give compliments. I mean you're so suspicious of them." Taking a sip of his water he barked out another laugh. "You know you need to learn to trust me at some point. I can actually come here and not bring a folder." Arching a brow almost in challenge he chuckled again. "No the heat isn't too much. Trust me I'd take this heat any day over the desert."
Shaking his head he went serious, she was obviously concerned and that was one thing he didn't want to do. Isabella was in his care now, and she was important. Worrying her was unacceptable. "Steven and Rennie are fine. Rennie took a bullet in the shoulder, but he's fine, it went right through." Sighing he ran his large hand down his face. "Listen, you're trying to change the subject. You're good I'll give you that, but stop." Turning to face her fully, "Look, you think he's alive, give me one thread of evidence that you've found, one ounce of possibility and I'll have Steven look into it, but if you don't have anything you agree to stop, can we agree to that?" It was the same argument over and over and he was tired of it, tired of getting infected with her hope and more tired of seeing her in pain from it.

Matt flipped down the visor and fixed his hair from the wind. He had been visiting Isabella at least once a month for the last five years and while he wasnât trying to make an impression he didnât want to look like a wild man. Stepping down from the jeep he slammed the door and headed to the small unassuming house. Giving a nod to Gemma as he stepped inside he gave a small smile. Gemma nodded her head to the back porch, knowing he wasnât there to see her. Heading to the back he grabbed two waters from the fridge and stepped into the warm sunshine. Seeing the small woman watching the yard he took the chair beside her and passed the water bottle.
Sighing out he leaned back in the seat and opened the bottle, taking a minute before speaking. âGemma says she caught you looking for Alejandro again on the internet.â He said, pushing his sunglasses up and turning slightly towards her. âI know why youâre doing it, but youâre only going to get yourself more hurt. You know I donât like it either but heâs dead.â When she went to speak he raised his hand, âAnd donât get mad at her for doing her job.â This time he gave a warm smile. âOn a better note, I hear you once again aced your exam. Seems college suits you.â Arching a brow he laughed and turned back to the yard. âYou never cease to amaze me. In the last five years youâve gone from a snobby little girl to this amazing woman, who for some reason is hell bent on keeping me on my toes. Problem is I might be good at it but not for long periods of time, was never a ballerina.â Letting out a laugh he took a sip of water, âYou truly are something else. And I mean that in the best way possible.â
