“I reckon it’s the customer service here that confuses me endlessly. I mean, everyone’s so damn keen to help you when you walk in. I know they have to do that, but I’m entirely sure I like it, you know what I mean?” Brigid questioned with raised eyebrows. “I don’t know, I just think it’s a bit strange. Surely it’s really draining for the people who have to do that.”
Max nodded along to what Brigid was saying. “I know exactly what you mean! Getting positive attention is getting positive attention. Who cares if it comes from the person trying to sell you an eighty-dollar t-shirt. Sometimes I’ll even go into stores to just talk to people.” He slowed his spew of words down, realizing that he was probably making himself sound like a loner. Maybe he was. Max only had Mateo to talk to at home, after all, and he was only four.

“I wouldn’t say I’m an angel,” Imogen replied. “There are days where i want to tear my hair out. Sometimes, I think about sneaking off during nap time and letting it out in the janitor’s closet.” She shrugged, pushing a few strands of hair from her face. “But I love them, I love working with them.”
“I’m pretty good friends with our new librarian. She lets me nap in the reading nook during lunch hour sometimes. Let me know if you ever need a favour. I could definitely pull a few strings for you.” Max would do what he could to help a fellow (stressed) teacher out. “I also happen to know that the storage room in the gym is currently filled with beanbags and is dark as night like, twenty-four-seven.” Max was grateful that he didn’t work in a highschool. All of his quiet, sleepy places would probably have been commandeered by horny teenagers.

“hold on to that feeling because i feel the exact same thing.” lee agreed with a joyful nod. “great choice. now our destination after the dance is decided. greek food makes every night end better.” she took her place in the car but after max’s moment with the toys, it wasn’t hard to see that she was surprised from the change of the expression on her face. “i– uh– didn’t know that you were married.” it was too late for her to stop the instant blushing on her rosy cheeks. her lips failed, trying to form a awkward smile.
Max could clearly see the moment Leslie’s expression changed. “Oh!” He said, face matching in redness. “Oh, no. I’m not married. I don’t even have my own kid. Well, I do, I mean --” Max took a moment to finish clearing off her spot before he continued to explain. “My kid -- Mateo -- he’s my sister’s son. She passed away two years ago. I’ve been taking care of him.” He probably didn’t need to repeat it, but Max felt the need to emphasis the point: “I’m not married.” After all, he kind of had a thing for Lee.

“Thank you,” Max said, voice honest. “It’s just been a day from hell. You know what I mean?”

“Definitely not trying to pull anything,” Scout sighed, shaking her head with a warm smile before tugging on his sleeve a bit to start them on the way down the street. “I moved into my current apartment months ago, and I still haven’t unpacked half the things I’ve got put away. Would be nice to have a helping hand - it might actually motivate me to get the whole process started.”
Max followed behind Scout, a grin playing on his lips. He had no idea where he was going, but Scout was good people. He’d lend a helping hand for the woman whenever he could. “Living out of boxes would drive me crazy. I think, after a few months, it’s time to realize that you’re sticking around here for awhile.” “What neck of the woods did you move to?”

“well, we’ll see, maybe i’ll embarrass myself or maybe people will focus on you and don’t see my awkward moves, huh?” she said with a playful voice, following his steps. “alrigt, dinner is on me. where should i take your for a dinner? what about some greek food? or something spicy? or i can cook it for you but that’s too risky, i might poison you by accident. people say that i have no limits when it is salt.”
“No matter how it goes, I have a feeling it’ll be good.” Max took a minute to decide what he wanted to do in terms of food. He and salt had never gotten along too well. Something spicy sounded good, but Greek -- Greek sounded heavenly. “Alexander’s is pretty damn good. It’s a hole-in-the-wall, but they’ve got the best gyros I’ve ever had.
Max unlocked the car doors and slid into the drivers seat. “Sorry about all this,” Max said, quickly moving to clear the kids books and plastic toys out of the front seat where he usually stored them. “My kid hates being in the car. He goes crazy without all this stuff.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I love the Bond films but can we all agree that the Brosnan era was full of some cheesy as hell lines?”
“I think that’s the whole point! There’s something so great about movie adaptations that pull from the books no matter how lame some of it is. I mean, c’mon! Think about some of the names from that series. I mean, Holly Goodhead?”
brigidcarney:
“Well, you know, many things happened. Loads of small things that made the whole day sort of weird. I think a barista tried to flirt with me but I can never tell with Americans, they’re all so friendly and nice. It’s bleedin’ confusing.”
“Really?” Max sounded surprised. “We’re all so friendly and nice? You must not have met too many of us so far. There’s a load of shit-faces across the country. There’s a good chance he was flirting with you.” He paused, considering the circumstance. “On second thought, it could just be his retail voice. Anyone who works behind a counter knows that they put on a sweeter voice when talking to customers.”

“I do a lot more than teaching them not to pee their pants. I teach them to have manners, how to add 2 and 2, how to color in the lines, that when a boy pulls a girl’s hair, it doesn’t always mean they like them and vice versa.”
Max grinned at the red-head, loving how she defended her craft. “Hey, it’s not like I could do it.” Max raked his fingers through his hair, and let out a sigh. “I’ve got Mateo for maybe four hours a day before he goes to bed, and I can barely manage that. You’ve got like, twenty-five of them for seven hours straight. You’re probably an angel of some sort.”

“okay, i think i can rely on your latin part. can i?” she replied with a smirk. “maybe you’ve got the moves, somewhere inside of you, burried deep. there is only one way to see how this bet will end up… we have to try it, so… are you ready?”
“Oh,” Max said, voice playful, “I was born ready. I’m just not so sure if you are.” He began to walk, leading the way towards his car. “If you ever need me to slow down so you can keep up with me, just let me know.” He chuckled, pulling his keys out of his back pocket. “Are you at least going to buy me dinner after?”

“Wow,” Max said, eyes wide. “That’s really harsh, Keira. I -- I thought you liked me.” He put a small, fake pout on his face.
