My son’s graduation is tomorrow! While I’m so proud and thrilled for him, I’m not looking forward to it at all. One, I’m sick with a bad cold and that makes everything feel harder and more like an ordeal. Two there are over 700 kids in his class so it’s going to take forever and ever. 😫 I hate these kinds of things in general. Ceremonies of any sort are so dumb to me. I feel like all the speakers and speeches and whatnot are not needed. Just get to the point of why you are there. When I got married I told the woman who performed the ceremony that I wanted zero speeches beforehand. I wanted straight to the vows and boom done. She got up there and gave a speech about love or something I honestly don’t even remember. I do remember being pissed. She claimed that guests expect and want the speech part. I strongly disagree. That makes me #1 Grinch I suppose but I don’t care. The guests want to get to the reception and then home. Anyway, my son just got home from rehearsal and he said it will be no longer than 2.5 hours only because the next school has to get ready to go after them. He told me about all the speakers and some other crap they are doing and just ugh.

My son is a senior this year and the college decision stuff has been rough. He still hasn’t committed to any place. He’s on the waitlist at his original top choice that he is honestly no longer is interested in. He was going to go to what was his original last choice (dad’s Alma mater) because he got in right away. But now he’s been admitted last minute to another choice (my Alma mater) and it’s thrown him for a loop. I desperately want him at my AM for purely selfish reasons-basically it’s closer to home. It’s also a Big 10 top tier university with lots of opportunities for his major and several of his friends are going there too. My husband’s AM is a fine school, but a smaller, less prestigious school. It’s also almost 3 hours away. My son told me this morning he’s ready to commit to dad’s AM and I’m absolutely devastated. I tried not to show it, but he picked up on it and now he’s doubting himself. I flat out told him not to take my feelings into consideration because my reasons were selfish and any doubts I have are me projecting how I would feel in the situation. He is the one who has to go and live this college experience, so it should be his choice alone. Problem with that is that he’s basically me in teenage boy form so my anxiety is his anxiety. I feel bad for making him doubt anything because the whole thing has been so stressful for him. This year has been so hard! I’m so sad right now.

My son turned 18 a few weeks ago and gets to vote for the first time today! There’s only the school board (though obviously important!!) and a community program levy that always passes on our ballot, but he’s still excited. I can’t wait to take him after school. I hope they yell out and cheer that he’s a first time voter like they usually do. He will pretend that’s cringey but secretly love it.

I am in the market for a new treadmill. My current one is 20 years old and used daily. Ideally I would just get a newer version of the exact same one because it is perfect, but alas, it no longer exists. I don‘t want anything that requires a subscription or app to use. I have no use for virtual trainers or classes. No need for anything fancy-I am not training for the Olympics here. Where is the best place to go to buy a treadmill? I bought my current one at Sears in the mall so I think that tells you all you need to know about that.

So this morning I found out that my brother has unexpectedly passed away. He didn’t show up for work for two days and they did a welfare check on him and well, it wasn’t good news. The police officer told me that it looked as if it was something sudden like a heart attack and that was a relief as he was depressed his whole life and I often worried he might go in another way. I feel bad because I hadn’t spoken to him for months since I settled our parents’ estate. I was like, I am done being the one keeping this siblingship going and he can reach out if he wants. I regret that now, even though I couldn’t have known. It’s weird because he’s been on my mind so much the past few days and now this. It’s weird how often that happens. I still have one brother left, but frankly he sucks. I am still in shock and sad. He was a complicated guy. Quiet and he held on to a lot of anger about his place in the world, but deep down he was a kind soul and a good guy. I suspect he was neurodivergent in some way. He never married or had kids. Never even a long term partner of any kind. He had a lot of friends and people who cared about him though which is good. There’s been a big outpouring of condolences and sincere offers of help which I truly appreciate since as the only (responsible) next of kin all of the arrangements and what not falls on me. Unfortunately he was a hoarder, so the apartment clean out is going to be brutal. When I say hoarder I don’t just mean a slob, I mean he actually had hoarding disorder and we already had to pay a hazmat team to come clean his apartment once a few years ago. I don’t know. Life is crazy and you never know what the day will bring. I definitely didn’t expect this.

I love winter and everything about it, I never complain about snow or the cold, but it is currently 1 degree F here right now with the wind chill being -17. Even I find this to be a little much. 🥶

The switch from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time which will take away my glorious hour of daylight in the afternoon and give it to the early morning is just another example of how Morning People are an oppressive class in modern society
