âhe is so cuteâ was the only thing that rang through her brain. she couldnât believe that she had such big crush on this stupid boy. this stupid boy who liked comics, and could draw. she felt loose with this guy. she felt like she could take on the world as long as he was right there. she liked how he was silly with her. he listen to her and was the only person in crownsville that she cared to be around. he was her friend, and beleive it or not zara didnât have many friends to choose from. so she was beyond happy that he was here.
zara plopped down on the couch next to him, their elbows touching lightly as she did so. just a simple touch made her really happy. she wanted nothing but for him to like her like she liked him. she wanted nothing but hope that he had a crush on her too. â well max, itâs been kind of boring unless iâm with you, â she said, and totally wasnât joking. life seemed to be better when he was around. â i wish i had more friends is all. it gets kind of lonely holed up in my apartment. âÂ
Anyone could notice the cheeky grin written along Maxâs lips as he heard Zara say she had fun when she was with him. Obviously he felt the same way but he was never certain that she really did like being around him. Max was no casanova and he certainly never assumed anything of anyone. Naivety was one of his faults. âAh, do you really?â His head turned toward her, eyes closing from how widely his smile was. âThat makes me happy.â And it really did. So much that he threw an arm around her, pulling her into him. He did it in the friendliest way possible, only hoping she wasnât uncomfortable with him doing it. He just kind of adored her.
âIâm appalled you donât have more friends. Iâd have thought you were pretty popular with friendships.â Zara was such an absolute sweetheart and so funny. She was a great time to be around and he always wanted to hang out with her outside of work. Max is also one who didnât have many friends either but he can see Zee and himself getting a lot closer. âNext time youâre lonely, you have my number.â He nodded. At first, he didnât realize how it would sound so he was quick to clear it up. He liked keeping his job and was in no way ready to be taken to HR. âUh, what Iâm trying to say is-- we should hang out outside of work. Youâre my work friend and weâre going to need to advance to actual friends.â Max smiled, squeezing her into him just a bit. âYouâve got a friend in me.â
elodiehq¡:
elodie bit down on her lip softly as the other spoke. she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear as she nodded softly. she didnât know why everything happened when it did. she questioned herself, if she did something wrong and thatâs what he mind finally fixated on. hearing him telling her what happened finally gave her a little bit of clarity, a little bit of closure. âyou could have.. i could have been there for you. are you.. are you okay now?âÂ
After a deep breath, Max was finally able to look her in the eyes again while he softly shook his head. âYou couldnât have, Elodie. I care more about...what I was addicted to than you. And it sounds horrible to say out loud, fuck.â He nervously ran a hand through his hair, not able to shake off the memories. âIâm better now, yeah...I mean, I think I am. I have setbacks but theyâre not bad. I was never that bad. I just-- I was ashamed....my brother and sister donât even know I was going through it.â He blinked, brown hues still boring into Elodieâs. âI know you could have been there for me through it. I was stupid. You didnât deserve that.â
riverhqs¡:
river grinned. âthank you.â the male laughed softly as he took a bite of one of the fries in front of him. âcasanova.. i like that.â he chuckled, shaking his head. âdude, i dont think youâre defective. maybe you arent giving yourself a chance? like.. i donât know how to explain it, but i donât think youâre defective or anything like that⌠stubborn, yes..âÂ
âMhm, itâs your new name on my phone.â Max gave him a nod with a cheeky grin, nudging his shoulder playfully. âStubborn.â He repeated with a click of his tongue. âI canât even say Iâm not stubborn because that in itself sounds stubborn.â He ran his hand through his hair as he let out a small laugh. âI guess. Can I borrow a fire extinguisher then? Better yet, Iâll practice talking to any woman Iâm interested in on you. Just make sure you donât fall for me when I do.â He teased.

Maddie was sad at the thought of never hearing their mothers voice again but she didnt want to dwell on it. She smiled and sipped at her wine. She tried her best her whole childhood to be there for Maddox, making sure that whenever he was sad she was the one who was there to pick him up. They each got knocked down a lot, early life had not spared any punches. âI wouldnt be surprised, and Mal would just start crying without any context, just sad cause we were sadâ She said with a small chuckle. She wanted this night to be happy. She wanted to drop all of the baggage they both carried and just be there with him.Â
She saw him sheepishly catch her eyes and she wondered what he was hiding. Madelyn knew her brother better than anyone, she would argue better than Malachi even. âof course, they got me through those years without you twoâ she said honestly. She could see it on his face there were things he wasnt telling her and while she usually wouldnt have been the one to push, she was feeling pushy. âSo Maxxie, I need to know how life is here, how is school, what do you do here. Its one thing to tell me over face time, now that Im here I wanna seeâ she said with a smile, she pushed herself up onto the counter and kicked her feet again.Â
âBecause weâre bloody melts, all of us.â He chuckled through the strong feeling he had a second ago of tearing up. Max and his siblings were sentimental people. Very emotional beings, which he assumes-- no, he knows they got it from their mother. Itâs a beautiful thing. Not a lot of people can feel as strongly about almost everything as they do. It was both a blessing and a curse. He was just glad they were all so alike in so many ways that they all understood each other, no matter what.Â
Which is why it was so, so hard for him to lie to his sisterâs face. As soon as she mentioned school, he could feel his chest tighten as he now grabbed a glass like any decent human being, filling it to the brim with wine. âItâs great, Mads.â He looked at her with a wide smile. Anyone else wouldnât see through it. He thought himself to be quite the actor when it came to hiding his secrets. He managed this whole time, anyway. But Maddie was different and she was finally back together with him. He wasnât sure if he could keep it from her for too long. Whether it be her squeezing it out of him or Max willingly telling her because he wouldnât be able to hold it in much longer. âYeah, school is the reason why I havenât been around much lately actually. And you know where I work-- you should stop by some time soon so you could see the flyers I still have up for your shop. The lads at the store loved them. Already talking about visiting whenever they can. I donât do much other than work...study, and just sit in my apartment. Which you should visit too. Itâs much darker than Malâs and I live with two other mates but itâs chill.â He hoped he didnât seem like he was trying too hard to cover it up. God, he felt like shit.

âmaybe something better?â river chuckled softly. âlook, dude. all youâve got to do is give them a fire extinguisher and youâre golden. iâm tellin ya.â he teased. the male reached over, stealing another bite of the food before the other. he hummed, shaking his head. âor buy them food or somethin.âÂ
Max shook his head with a gentle laugh. âMate, youâre ridiculous.â His eyes followed Riverâs reach before he pushed the food closer to the other. âSee, if only it were that simple, right? And unfortunately Iâm not a casanova like yourself.â He teased, leaning back as he sighed. âI donât understand...maybe Iâm defective. Where can I return this trait?â
ofduboisâ:
she wished that he wouldnât have heard her word vomit. she didnât wanna seem like a total loser. i think youâre cool. how lame. why was she so lame. god she wished that she didnât have to say stupid things all the time. but he responded well to it. so that was good for the most part. he was very cool. very sweet. very charming. very handsomeâ okay thatâs enough gushing for now. but the point was she was totally head over heels for this boy she just met. he was so cute and all she wanted was to grab his cheeks and kiss him. but that would be a little strange wouldnât it ? yeah totally. he probably would want to do that anyway. she was just an average little french girl. probably not his type.
she had a crush and it was bad bad. like real bad. she didnât know how to get rid of it, but whenever he suggested going to the break room she couldnât help but want to jump for joy. she was already tired of doing absolutely nothing at the shoppe, so she would be even happier doing absolutely nothing with maddox. â yeah totally. lead the way captain. â she said once again, saluting him like a total nerd. she couldnât help but be goody with him. he brought out the nerd in her. he had her giggling like a school girl, and laughing like crazy.
This time, Maddox couldnât help but stand up straight and salute her right back as a low chuckle slipped past his grinning lips. He was pretty much a goof whenever he could be. Crownsville brought it out of him, surely. He had always felt so much pressure back in England that he never felt like he could be himself. Still at times here he would fall back to those ways and kind of hide himself, not wanting to act silly in front of anyone but of course it was okay in front of Zara. He appreciated her for being herself in front of him from the get go. She didnât seem to care and he admired it. It helped him feel like he didnât have to fall back.
Reaching their break room, Max made his way to throw himself down on the couch. His head resting back as he shut his eyes momentarily. His sleeping schedule was so fucked up recently that he could pass out right then and there. âFucking hell.â He sighed, adjusting himself to meet Zaraâs gaze. He still didnât know too much about her, seeing as she was pretty new. âSo, Zee-- how are you gettinâ on? You like it around here?â He grinned. âBoth Crownsville and working at Shazam with your favorite trainer?â

As Maxâs head fell to her shoulder she raised up her hand and placed it gently on his cheek, rubbing it softly with her thumb. She knew this would be hard for him, but hopefully the good kind of hard. The kind that brings peace and comfort after the initial sting. When maddie found the photobook and subsequent letters, she locked them in the attic for weeks, not able to even think of them. She spent the weeks crying, only perking up to call her brothers for their daily face times. She was thankful for her look then, there was never at ime they would have suspected it, and if they did they at least didnt call her on it.Â
âI miss her too Maxxieâ she said honestly. âI dont think its something that we will ever get overâ she said with a lump in her throat âI still think one day Ill just get a call from her and all will be well, she will tell me she cant wait to come to the store, and she hopes I am eating enough, and I can tell her I love her and all will be goodâ she said tears in her eyes starting to form. âme tooâ she said she stood up and offered her hand to Maddox. âlets go get someâ she wandered over to the kitchen and poured herself another glass. She finished it in two sips and poured another.Â
One of the reasons that Madelyn had come to Crownsville was to show them this, to never let her mothers memories die, not just the memory of her but her memories, her first concert, her first pregnancy, all of the stories she had written out on the back of those photos. While this was the fire that got her out of Manchester, it was also something that frightened her. She knew that her and her brothers were strong enough to weather any storm, but Madelyn was terrified that her brothers would shut her out. That they would see this and associate her with the pain of their mother. She didnt want to throw it in their face, but she didnt want to be the person that constantly brought up those memories. Manchester was behind them, but their mother didnt have to be. Maddie just hoped that this wouldnt damage their relationship, as ridiculous as it sounded in her head, knowing her brothers, it didnt stop her anxiety.Â
Max still had a small little smile on his lips. It was hard for him not to. He was always smiling. At this point in his life, he didnât know if it was just his signature or if he had gotten so used to hiding behind it that it became permanent. Not that he could hide anything from his siblings. Well-- there was one thing. One or two pretty important things...but thatâs a different story. âI just want to call her sometimes and hear her voice. Iâve heard it in my dreams before but itâs not the same. Itâs never the same.â He cleared his throat softly, taking Maddieâs hand in his to follow her out to the kitchen once again.
It took him a bit to actually finish his own drink. He mostly stared at the liquid,m swishing it around in the cup as he was flooded with the past. Their mother was always on his mind but he hadnât felt like crying over her in a very long time. Maddie showing up was part of it. Even if she didnât bring the pictures with her. She had a motherly instinct to her, despite wreaking havoc with him whenever they had the chance. Maybe thatâs why he felt so attached to her. Maddox loved Malachi with everything in him, he loved them both a ridiculous amount but because of that attachment to their mother, Max had a sweet spot for Maddie. Both of them, in their own ways, at times acted more like parents to him than their own father and stepmother. It was weird to think...but they were his only family. The only people he considered true family. âOnce weâre done with these drinks Iâm pretty sure Mal is going to find us huddled together in a pool of tears.â He chuckled dryly, raising his gaze to meet hers. âThanks...for showing me those pictures. I needed to see her. I really did.â

the blonde glanced over at the other, a small chuckle leaving her lips as he asked her how she was again. she was trying, she really was, but he wasnât making it easy on her. elodie had tried her best to move past everything, she really had. she wanted it to be a forgive and forget situation, but mostly a forget thing. âi.. itâs okay.. itâs uh, the universe is set up that way, i guess. sometimes things arenât meant to work out, but thatâs alright.. i uh.. iâm sorry if i ever did something?âÂ
It absolutely gutted him to hear her apologizing. It was never her fault...Maddox had to take responsibility entirely but of course, she didnât know this if he left her in the dust a long time ago. âNo-- no, Elodie...you never did anything wrong. You were a lovely girl.â He began, taking a deep breath and keeping his eyes locked on hers. âIt was my fault. Nothing to do with you, I--â It was hard for him to talk about this point in his life. Heâs still very ashamed of it and prefers keeping it locked up in his memories, but she deserved to know. âI was going though a hard time with my...with my addictions.â His gaze now leaving hers. âIt fucked me up so much and my priorities got fucked along with me. You didnât deserve that and I bloody well didnât deserve you. But trust me, you did absolutely nothing wrong. Nothing at all.â
riverhqs¡:
âyou should feel very special.â river chuckled softly, leaning back. âyouâre ridiculous. anyway, tell me youâve been up to something interesting? youâve⌠become the next spiderman or something? anythinâ?
âNot really. Though I do have a bite mark on my arm thatâs been itching for a good week now...dunno if I might turn into him yet, only time will tell.â Max nodded with a low rumble of a chuckle. âOther than that, no. Not giving girls fire extinguishers, I can tell you that much. More like Iâm struggling to speak to them and read any possible signs...â
elodiehq¡:
the blonde sat up a bit and looked over at the other. a lot of time had past since the two had seen each other and the last time they saw each other, things didnât end very well. she gave him a small smile and nod. âiâm.. yeah, im good. itâs been a while, yeah. did you.. want to sit? i dont mind.âÂ
âOh, yeah, sure.â He forced a smile as he took a seat beside her. His gaze set into the distance ahead of them as he thought what was appropriate to say next. âSo...how are you? Wait- we already discussed that.â God, it was awkward. Max had no idea how to start this conversation with her. âActually, Elodie, I donât know if you want to talk about what happened or not, you might have let it go by now and wonât want to hear it but...I just, I owe you an infinite amount of apologies, donât I? Iâm- Iâm sorry, for how things ended.â

Emma had the day off today. Desperately in need of some inspiration, a quick google search told her Crownsville had its very own art gallery, so a visit to Outside The Lines it was.
Some two hours later, with a lot of charcoal smudges on her fingers and sketchbooks full, she emerged, sliding her books into her bag and perching on one of the outdoor benches. âHey, uhâŚyou wouldnât happen to have a powerbank on you, would you?âÂ
It wasnât the type of art he was used to sketching but he currently had such a bad creative block that he needed to gain some inspiration. So far, not much luck but it was nice to do something different than be inside of his room racking his brain for ideas. He was heading back to Shazam Comics to pick up a few things he left when he was stopped. âOh, uh...nah, Iâm sorry.â Max replied, shoving his hands into his pockets. âI do have a charger back where I work though...if youâre in desperate need, I could help you out there? Youâll get a nice tour of the Shazam break room, if that helps.â
