This is the most considerate advice for doing stretches I've ever seen??? Initially I started to go, "...but I can't do that with my knee-" then he showed a way I could do it. I was like... whoa. I have never. Seen this specific typesetting mistake before. I've seen editing mistakes I've seen writing mistakes I've seen typos aplenty I have never seen someone accidentally paste the file version details into the text while typesetting.

that's the first page of the book as well like. I'm assuming this got missed because it obviously happened after the copy was finalised. that's an InDesign file (and not the first InDesign file of the project (clock the 'V2')) so idk much about the publishing process but this is presumably final final steps before committing to print.

but like. idk. this is delightful to me. this is such a specific error. wow.

This looks like somebody converted an earlier print pdf into an editable file (the clue is in the version details oddly inserted into the text; print PDFs have this outside the margin for identification and is trimmed off after printing). My best guess is somebody LOST the original editable indesign file and all they had was the print PDF and they had to reformat the book for a new printing - probably the paperback edition - so some poor person had to take that pdf and convert it into editable text which means the file information that sits outside the margin is converted as well. That person has then had to check the whole file through for weird formatting like line breaks and extra spaces, page numbers in odd places and this string of file version information which would occur on p much every page.

And that poor person missed that line on the first page in the new file.

@greaseonmymouth if you get the chance inquiring minds would love to know more about why mistakes tend to be missed on the first page. I would've thought that's the page that gets checked most often!

That is ironically exactly the reason why it gets missed!

The more often you look at something, the more used to seeing it you get and your eyes simply skip over stuff even if you don’t intend for that to happen. It’s subconscious. You can’t control it. This is one of the reasons it’s recommended to edit or proofread in a different font and size - the text physically changes which means your eyes aren’t just scanning the same old for the nth time but are forced to process it anew.

(This is the explanation for why fanfic writers catch typos more often after they hit post on ao3. The text literally looks different on ao3 than it did in their text editor so their eyes are now seeing things they missed.)

When it comes to cover proofs it’s SO common to have typos or word repeats because the covers get looked at SO much that everyone just goes “yep looks fine” because this is the 7th cover meeting or whatever and the persons who worked on it obviously have seen it 5 million times in the past two months. For proofing covers it’s recommended to work backwards and use physical barriers, like a piece of paper covering the cover printout you’re looking at and then you look at the last line on the back of the cover and start backwards. You catch so many more errors that way. That includes misspelled titles, word repeats, punctuation errors, whatnot.

So I guarantee that the person who did this pdf to editable text conversion and reformatting has been staring at that document for several hours for several days and simply missed this due to simple repetition fatigue. What should have happened is another person should’ve had a fresh set of eyes on the file to check for errors and I can promise you that there was simply no time for another overworked and underpaid publishing employee to check this over before it went to print. I should hope somebody noticed after printing and that this was fixed in reprints (if the book gets a reprint, it’s not a given).

The answer to "How did these Ancient People do this????" is basically always

1. A lot of dudes. Just a ton of fucking people from beginning to end of the process.

2. Ancient people weren't stupid, they just figured shit out the same way we do: fuck around until you find out.

3. We're gonna plan this out and it's gonna take ten fucking years, and you will cope.

4. Sticks and string are surprisingly versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes, like moving stuff and making sure things are even and go in the spot you wanted to put them in!

5. I want to make this easier and more efficient to move. If I put this on the round thing and push, it will move. If I put this in water, it will move. If I get some animals and rope and have a whole bunch of them drag it, it will move. All of these things are a better option than one guy trying to pick the whole fucking thing up.

There needs to be a movement of people putting paint in fire extinguishers and super soakers and just covering every security camera that has been put up over the last forty years with paint or just pulling them down with like shovels and hoes or whatever they can do because honestly everyone hates them just get rid of them

1 C flour

2 T B. Powder [presumably baking powder]

1/2 t salt

2 T sugar

Mix:

1 egg

1 1/4 C Milk

1/3 C peanut butter melted

1 T shorting or oil

Combine with dry ingredients Cook at 275° on griddle

I have four kids. I’ve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.

This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldn’t feed them before those instances.

I’m not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.

i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.

every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.

not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.

"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!

i know things are hella grim in the nsfw/kink art circles especially in the last year --

but I'm hearing there's a NSFW-friendly ko-fi alternative built on atproto that's actively in the works, and being vetted by lawyers right now. as torrent-princess (OP) says, you should be able to swap out payment processors while keeping your account intact. this matters since even if stripe removes support, you'll still have a shop and all of your links intact. (ATproto is an infrastructure that bsky is built on, but is far bigger than bsky with far more opportunities.)

additionally, the Free Speech Coalition is working on a credit union specifically for adult work (including kink art) - here's the link so you can add your interest & support. Since this will be built by sex workers, there'll be far less risk of being debanked for spurious and puritanical reasons.

on a domain TLD level, there's an initiative here for a .furry domain built from the ground up by seasoned furries; it's unclear whether they'll support NSFW, but it's yet another promising turn of events for a group that's been similarly affected by censorship.

there are friends and allies out there helping to build a working parallel infrastructure. keep being vocal, keep supporting these initiatives when it's possible, and keep supporting your nsfw/kink artists. ♥
