The biggest sign Daniel is not doing well is that there’s no skill to how he’s questioning Lestat. Daniel has always been abrasive, but he’s never just been an asshole and he’s not even really asking him anything. He’s just provoking him. He may as well be saying “and then what?” over and over.

There’s the stuttering question. When he asked Louis if it was raining, it was to remind him that his memory is imperfect and can’t be treated objectively. There are holes in his story. He’s doing it so much with Lestat but never gets anywhere. Shouldn’t he have realised before now that he’s not going to get the whole truth from him? Not ever?

He took Gabrielle’s suggestion of asking about the great conversion so quickly and there was a kind of resignation in the way he asked. He barely made an attempt to get anything from him before that. Lestat has probably worn him down over the last two months, but there was a method with Louis. He was attentive to detail. He caught every little discrepancy. There’s been none of that with Lestat. He’s not even trying at all. I don’t think he can try.

I fear he’s back to being that boy who fumbled over his tape recorder again except now he has all the baggage of fifty additional years of life AND he’s relapsed. He’s off his game more than he’s potentially ever been. No wonder he was so gleeful but getting something out of Lestat. There’s predatory journalism, but Daniel never pushed Louis like that. He pushed him until he was crying, but there was always a point to it. This was nothing. Daniel is unravelling in front of us.

the very idea that someone could sit down, watch lestat puke while still trying to rationalize the abuse, have a full blown panic attack over it when louis yells that there is no rationalizing this, and then go say it's consensual...that it's not portrayed as abuse...insane...

i also think a lot of people aren't really getting the *point* of louis' reaction. it's extremely harsh and judgmental and completely insensitive to the fact that lestat is being abused, but that is the purpose of it. the entire season is lestat attempting to justify it. this is louis saying that you cannot justify it. there is no rational way to justify that happening. and when lestat has a breakdown over it, they both sort of realize at the same time that this means lestat has been suffering incestuous sexual abuse for 200 fucking years.

it overwhelms lestat, and it clicks for louis. that's when he changes tacts, when he comforts lestat, when he gently tries to help him admit that it's been abuse all along in the bar. it's so realistic, such a necessary sequence.

i think there is unfortunately a knee jerk reaction people have to abuse like this, esp when it's mother/son, where it's just "gross", "weird", or "sick", as louis says. where the child is not taken to be a victim, somehow. i think the show is very honest in having this be louis' initial reaction, until he sees lestat's panic, until he properly thinks it through for a second. and then he gets it, and he feels horrible about what he said. again, it's just all very realistic and bittersweet. everyone involved did an incredible job with this storyline imo.

really struck by how claudia grieving madeleine seems to be the thing that gets most to lestat during the seance. he only starts to cry when claudia tells them that she can’t find her companion, that’s she’s been alone this entire time. and of course this is what would get to him. the thing he fears the most is loneliness. so knowing that his daughter found a companion only to lose her again in death. it’s devastating

thinking about magnus' 'ghost' and gabrielle leaving as lestat sings, but nicki's ghost staying and smiling as lestat uses his art as the only real way through his feelings (vs 'when are you going to make an album [of all your songs]?' taunt of magnus from before), lestat singing 'don't burn alone' and smiling back for a second.... the only way is through (art)!!!

iwtv continues to be so smart in its portrayal of memories and trauma, the way lestat’s memories of his family are so obnoxiously loud, everyone’s screaming all the time for no reason and everyone’s acting like caricatures, like an actual assault on the senses, as if lestat’s mind is filled with unbearable noise every time he thinks about them. lestat’s memories coming at him all fragmented and loud and violent, attacking him and beating him into submission as he desperately tries to escape them is such an interesting contrast to how louis would carefully weave a thread of his past pretending the glaring holes in it weren’t there

I think they did a great job of showing how degrading lestat found life with his family. as a lover of beauty, he found the ugliness of their minds and their lifestyle unbearable. something that really touched me about that part of the book was how dazzled he was by the cleanliness of the monastery.

I love this show.

I love cycles of violence and the legacies of abuse. I love generational trauma narratives. I love that the man vs self is externalized in gothic mirrors.

I'm so sorry to everyone who is having a bad time, but I actually am eating through the bars of my enclosure.
