Why must I wake so early?
When my love does not become a person until approximately 11 am?
And I tire around 10 and wake at 8.
I want to spend the day with you but our circadian rhythms are at odds.

Libraries are sneaky, because once you go in, it's soo easy to get a library card, and once you have one, you can pretty much grab one of everything of all the stuff they have there with no consequence, and take it home. But then once you're home and you've read all the stuff you'll have to go back to the library to return the stuff, and once you're at the library again, you're at the library again, so might as well pop in to see what they got, and then you're hauling half their shit home again, and then you'll need to return to the library to return them, so you're at the library again
And the next thing you know you've read 3000 books, your crops are clear and your skin is watered, an angel descents from the heaven to suck your dick twice a week, and also you've got some books to return so you've got a perfectly valid reason to go pop in to the library. Just a little bit.
The Creek

If speed limits were reduced to like 25-30 mph and most stoplights were replaced with roundabouts then traffic would actually move faster because going 45mph past Walmart certainly feels faster but then you stop at a stoplight every hundred feet and your average speed turns out to be like 15-20 mph but people don’t think that roundabouts are faster because for some reason they only ever replace like one stoplight with a roundabout so people being released from another stoplight down the road like a pack of racehorses all charge into the roundabout all at once and make it confusing and scary to get into it when in fact if every intersection was a roundabout then there would be a steady low density stream of cars all the time instead of a sudden stampede of them and it would also make things safer for pedestrians and cyclists but who the fuck cares about the lives of pedestrians and cyclists I guess and anyways I hate American car infrastructure

#1 is a hoodie. No doubt about it. Zip is there, hood is there. It is a hoodie.
#2 is where we start to question a little bit. But the answer remains the same. That is a hoodie.
#3 is not difficult at all. That is a jumper. NOT A SWEATER. A sweater is not ugly unless it is a christmas sweater that is intended to be ugly. That third one is a jumper (or a pullover if you want to be different).

My least favorite things about anti- UBI discourse is always the techbros whining that "nobody is going to work anymore! People will just watch Netflix all day!" and I have 2 responses:
1) Who the fuck cares. Who the fuck cares what people do with their time! That's kind of the fucking point!
2) People aren't going to stop laboring. Housework (look, it's right there in the word!) will still need to be done. So will maintenance on our homes and personal spaces. Children will still need carers, as will the elderly and disabled. There are millions of examples of ~work~ that we do all the time, uncompensated, that won't suddenly stop because we aren't forced to sell our labor to provide corporation's profits.
I'm not surprised that what is traditionally women's work is invisible to these dipshits, but it never fails to anger me.

Field studies have been conducted in several countries now, and the result is always the same - people will just flop about for a couple of months to recover from the burnout most people who have a job live with, and then they look for something to do. Some get a job with reduced hours, and some start doing charitable stuff like volunteering in soup kitchens and teaching others to do whatever their particular skill is. They socialize more, they are happier, and on average, people will work more, not less.
But the thing is, employers suddenly have to think about how to make their jobs appealing enough for someone to come and do them! It's hard to find someone to work for you for long hours under horrible conditions, if they can just choose not to; which shows you how voluntary our current system actually is.

What gets me about Austen up there is that his 'people don't work' example is school kids, a population that has been almost notoriously overworked in recent years. Kids get assigned hours of homework and are attending 5+ hours of classes, often in subjects that are challenging or uninteresting, often plus extracurriculars, in a uniquely stressful time in their lives. Some have part time jobs on top of that to help with family finances or to save for something important to them.
And this guy thinks that because some kids would prefer to go home and watch TV instead of doing their homework that means that nobody wants to work?
Just like...ask a high school kid about what they love to do, you may find that the kid who plays video games all the time wants to be making video games. Or so many other things. I feel like only exhausted and burnt out people are absent the desire to do something productive with their lives. And that's because they're recovering and need to rest!
Last night I had the thought that you could one-up these guys with cynicism in a pro-UBI argument: "Yeah, nobody wants to work these days, and have you noticed how badly most people do their jobs? The attitude problems, the unreliability, the backstabbing office politics? Imagine paying them to stay out of your way instead!"
Like. Many of us (not me, I'm blessed) have that one coworker - or boss - we'd love to never see again. Some of them probably have sympathetic reasons for being that way, some of them may just be assholes, and in any event I'm sure having to go in to work every day isn't making them better people. But our society is wealthy enough to bribe them to stay home and play video games or whatever and keep them from being anyone else's problem. Which would be pretty sweet for all of us!
