Hare played with the new moon, the full moon, the old moon. And then he rested, in a scrape of earth, and dreamed.

Cave art inspired deer herd.
All the June-July 2025 paintings featuring deer together. Acrylic and gouache on A5 watercolour paper. 1-2 hours each. Prints now on my Etsy shop. eredhes.etsy.com
This is probably the largest art I've made in a long time; it's 16x48 inches at 300dpi. All of the animals are inspired by petroglyphs and cave art from around the world on top of the shapes found within the animals themselves. It started with the center buck who was originally drawn in my sketchbook and slowly began to take on a life of its own. I'd love to paint this on a building somewhere.
"Eclipse" - digital. Could totally be a print I'm sure if I wasn't a coward. One life eclipses another; Smilodon takes down a whitetail deer. Inspired by petroglyphs, cave art, and ancient Scythian art. It's weird to think that the whitetail deer survived the ice age and made it to the present but many of its predators did not.
"The bear cult on the territory of the taiga Urals originated in the Upper Palaeolithic and persisted until the beginning of the 20th century. The manifestation of this cult was a kind of demonstration complexes of bear skulls and bones. Somewhat later, sculptural images of the bear emerged made of stone, bone, horn and clay, as well as personal decorations made of its bones. These sculptures and decorations were considered powerful amulets and served as talismans. Of particular note are the polyeiconic sculptures with images of the bear. The presence of multiangle sculptures testifies to the existence of a mythological worldview among the local population based on the threefold division into the upper, middle and underworlds. The bear was almost always a representative of the lower world in this system. It should be noted that the amount of materials testifying to the bear cult always depends on the degree of study of each archaeological period."

take it all in stride / speak, don't confide
Grave offerings and burying the dead with tools and goods is actually such a deeply human thing to do. It's not really even necessarily about how much you believe in a literal afterlife or them taking the tools with them. It's also just going Wait, I'm Not Done Taking Care Of You, let me make you one more pair of socks so your feet won't be cold when you go wherever it is where I can't follow.
[ID: collage of three small clay horse figures inspired by palaeolithic cave paintings. text reads: made to order cave horses eredhes.etsy.com. End ID.]

Man’s best friend - an 8400 year old dog burial found in Ljungaviken, Blekinge in 2020, is the oldest of its kind in Sweden. The grave contained some small gifts for the dog to enjoy in the next realm. Photo: Blekinge Museum
