Green Revolution: Seems to represent the beginning or birth of the relationship. It’s a springtime color. It could represent a revolution, a significant change in Joel’s life. Not only that, but it could also refer to a revolution as a cycle, hinting at the repetitive nature of Joel and Clem’s relationship. Red in Love: Red is the color of fire and blood, associated with energy, strength, passion, and desire. It is also symbolic of warning and danger. Joel and Clementine fell for each other hard, and their infatuation was instant and powerful. Agent Orange: the redness of her hair fades to an orange—then, to a muddy orange, grown out again, with increased messiness. It’s during the orange phase that the problems between the two emerge. The era of red passion has passed, and the fervor has died down. Blue Ruin: It’s a fresh beginning of sorts, a blank slate. At least that’s the happy interpretation of it. Clementine’s hair is blue when she experiences her most intense moment of identity loss, when her mental state is seriously in ruins.
