The New Anti-Valentine’s Theme Song of 2016
Washington-based N.C. native Melanie Edwards debuts ninth album with heartbreaking single
WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 21, 2016): For those who aren’t buying into the Hallmark-induced roses, gifts and romantic dinners this Valentine’s Day, there is no better way to spend the holiday weekend than crying over the best, new breakup song of 2016. Award-winning artist and musical scientist Melanie Edwards bears all for her ninth album with the gut wrenching, post-breakup single, "What Happened."
The poignant lyrics are the result of a failed relationship spanning six years, an engagement and even a white dress. No walk down the aisle; no fairy tale ending. When the going got tough, the groom-to-be went.
In the same vein as melancholic artists like Damien Rice, Tori Amos, Alanis Morrisette and Adele, the words are poetic, but rich with darkness. "What Happened" gradually builds, blending sweet, delicate music with sorrowful lyrics to resonate with the heartbroken of the world. However, there is a surprising lack of anger that is typically evident in breakup songs. Melanie's vocals are heavy with grief and despair; the heartbreak is deeper than anger. This is not a one-night stand, a casual fling or even a yearlong affair; this was forever handed back to her on a rusty platter.

The single was produced by a legendary industry team including producer/arranger/performer Louis Schwadron (David Bowie, Elton John, Rufus Wainwright); engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Phish, The Ramones); and assistant engineer Adam Sachs. The track was mastered by Grammy nominated engineer Joe LaPorta (Imagine Dragons, Foo Fighters, The Killers).
“The song is an intimate and slowly unfolding arrangement and lyrical message that invites the listener in rather than drowning them out,” explains Schwadron. “We used all warm sounding, acoustic instruments that most people have heard at some point in their lives - piano, cello, horn - in what feels like an intimate space to allow the intimacy of the lyrics to unfold in a natural way.”
Instead of retreating into her own grief, Melanie releases her emotional pain, giving an unveiled look at the depth of her wounds. This theme carries the entire album, Lorelei, which was the name of not only her antique engagement ring, but also the betrayed siren Lorelei, of the German folktale surrounding the famous Lorelei rock.
"I want to share this song with all the sad, heartbroken, angry and depressed people of the world whose chance at forever was ruined," said Melanie. "Loss is such a profound, universal experience and it relates to everybody. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith, but rather the price of love."
Melanie Edwards' single "What Happened" is available for purchase on iTunes or Amazon starting Feb. 12, 2016: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/what-happened-single/id1080131289
Melanie was also accompanied by Sam Shin on Cello and Louis Schwadron on French Horn. Cover art was photographed by Kelly and Kalina Schneider of Captured Journeys Photography and designed by Jenna Bailey of Artifacturing.

Discovering global musical scientist, Melanie Edwards
By Can Serrat: http://www.canserratart.com/2013/10/discovering-global-musical-scientist.html
Global musical scientist, Melanie Edwards, has been awarded a research grant towards her seventh experiment at Can Serrat, in El Bruc! This October and November, Edwards returns to Spain, after a 12-year hiatus, to further grasp the language, influence and source, to create her first bilingual, musical children's book The Seed That Made It Big/La Semilla Que Hizo Grande. In addition, Edwards will compose original songs paralleling the book's intentions and themes. This comes on the heels of having spent the winter writing, recording, mixing and mastering her sixth project, Las Rosas, in Costa Rica.
Check out her new song "The Circle", written and recorded at Can Serrat:
https://soundcloud.com/melanie-edwards-labs/the-circle
Edwards blends natural sounds chronicled through her journeys with her own intricate compositions. A musical and scientific hybrid, she is a classically trained pianist, violinist and singer who studied nuclear science. Touring worldwide with her symphonic lab, she captivates audiences with her haunting vocals and complex melodies, challenging all things between the binary.
