Its always so funny reading aesthetic critiques that try to lend themselves a sense of seriousness by trying to tie in a critique of capitalism. Bc if anything, the past 100 years should have taught us that capitalism doesn't have a set aesthetics. I've seen people complain about drab monotony as the aesthetic of capitalism, but also about how postmodern maximalism and bright colors are the aesthetic of capitalism. Anything can be the aesthetic of capitalism, because its just about what's selling in the moment. And people can sell their own aesthetics as "anti-capitalist" even when that's just another commercial trend (traditionalism, modernism, utilitarianism, maximalism, on and on forever).

20-30 years ago The Baffler was publishing articles that had the exact opposite complaint as this one going around rn: post-Fordist capitalism was drowning us in bright colors and loud, cheery designs. The alternative culture at that time loved minimalism and utilitarianism. Now trends caught up, and its the mainstream that's grey and minimalist and the critics who want color and uniqueness.

It's all fucking stupid, is what I'm saying.
