New pan flag

Okay, quick post about why the “new pan flag”

(this one)

shouldn’t be used.

As you can see here, and here it has been designed with the intent to scrap the original because:

1) the creator [of the original] supports kink at pride (here is why kink does belong at pride)

2) the creator [of the original] supports mspec lesbians (here is why msepc lesbians exist, here is a more word-y and less source-y explanation)

3) the original meaning of the colors is “transphobic”, according to the people who created the new flag.

It’s not inherently more problematic that any gendered attraction. It’s a flag, you can’t pack an entire manifesto in the meaning of the colors. You can’t include a disclaimer that no gender is monolithic because hey. It’s a flag.

I’ve also seen the argument that pansexuality is the attraction regardless of gender, and that it’s why the flag mentioning attraction to women, men, and nonbinary people is problematic. And while that can be true, pansexuality covers all attraction that is one way or another to every gender. You can’t impose “regardless of gender” on every pansexual person. The label is vague and encompasses a lot of things; it’s supposed to be this way. You’re supposed to have wiggle room in widely used labels. You don’t get to make a rigid box for pansexual people to fit in.

On top of that: flags are community owned. It’s ours. If a flag has a bullshit meaning or a shit creator, we can scrap the bigotry off of it. It’s not the case here, but if the pansexual flag was really scuffed it wouldn’t necessarily mean we should stop using it.

If you dislike the current flag because of how bright it is, for example, I’d strongly advise against using the proposed new flag, as it’s based on serious misunderstandings of our history.

Another thing I’d like to adress is, don’t feel bad if you fell for the rethoric of these twitter threads or any other push to use the new flag. Check the links from 1) and 2) and learn why they are wrong. The intentions behind the new flags are good, just misguided.

I also don’t have a twitter, but feel free to explain or send this to people there or anywhere else.

Lastly, I cannot say anything about the six stripes pan flag. I’ve barely ever seen it, I don’t know what history it has, who made it, etc. Sorry.

OP and this post have summed up my feelings on the pan flag discourse pretty well and why I will be continuing to use the magenta, yellow and cyan flag over the proposed new one.

The community has adopted the flag, its ours now. The creator doesn’t represent us, we represent us.

The new estimate above shows a running total for treatment at around $9,700 for the high end estimate for his stay if he can come home tomorrow. About $7,300 has been paid as a 75% deposit, with his $8,000 funding goal being the best case scenario for keeping him a full week (which they estimated to run $13,000 in total usually for cases.like his.)

This does not include the cost for any meds for his treatment plan or if he ends up needing follow up appointment(s)

I know money is tight for everyone, but anything you can spare, or even sharing around as far and wide as you can, would be a huge help.
