Lily remembered the day she first saw a scruffy boy in the training yard. Remembered the way he had glared at her when their gazes collided.

The wooden sword had seemed far too heavy for him and yet he had stood firm while she watched. He had even sneered at her before one of the older knights told him who she was.

‘That is the princess, you imp.’

Except that did not seem to frighten the boy. His face had softened, yes, but he did not cower before her.

Months later Lily had learnt his name was Bartemius. She also came to know he despised it and insisted on being called ‘Barty’ by everyone.
