As someone who has written academic papers about the role of disguise and deceit in the Odyssey — Nobody is so damn important.

Prior to this point, when Odysseus tries to exercise Xenia (ancient Greek guest rites/hospitality code), he did what he was supposed to do. (Well, we think so anyway — notably, the most famous books of the Odyssey are told by Odysseus, who isn’t exactly a reliable narrator.)

But when Polyphemus kills and eats some of the men, the game changes. The Cyclops makes it clear he has no intention of abiding by Zeus’s laws, and will cannibalize the lot of the men. So, Odysseus responds in kind — he breaks Xenia and lies. He introduces himself under a false name as part of a trick. Polyphemus then breaks Xenia again — he tells Nobody he’ll be eaten last, and that is the Cyclops’ guest gift to him.

Odysseus’ transgression is clearly the lesser one. The Nobody trick works. It gets Odysseus and most of his crew out of the cave alive.

But, crucially, before leaving Odysseus sheds his disguise. He admits his true identity, in detail, so he can boast of his achievements and add vanquishing a Cyclops to the list. And it bites him in the ass spectacularly.

The only reason why Polyphemus can curse Odysseus, can bid his father Poseidon to curse the man who blinded him, is because he now knows who did it. If Odysseus had kept his mouth shut, he might have safely made it home from there. But while a big part of why the Nobody disguise vs. real name reveal is showing Odysseus’s hubris, it’s not just about that. It’s also about the start of a pattern that hurts him more than it helps him.

From this point in the Odyssey on, Odysseus lies about his identity constantly. And sometimes it protects him, but more often it’s a detriment or at least unnecessary. He’s lying about his identity primarily to people who are on his side — a kindly loyal swineherd, his son, his faithful wife, his ailing father.

The last one is especially damning, because happens when Odysseus has already killed the suitors and returned home and reunited with the rest of his family sans disguises. He knows from everyone else that Laertes never betrayed him or his legacy, but was mourning his son and heartbroken for almost a decade. Odysseus has publicly declared his return to everyone else — his father doesn’t know because he’s living in squalor remotely. But Odysseus doesn’t tell his father who he is. He makes up a fake identity and tells a story implying Laertes’ son is dead. And when Laertes bursts out crying, then Odysseus drops the charade and finally admits who he really was.

There was no utility to that lie. No loyalty to test. No hidden threats to worry about. But Odysseus still instinctively lies to his beloved father about who he is, only dropping the charade when he sees the damage it’s doing to his relationships.

Because at this point, lying is pathological for Odysseus. He can’t seem to stop doing it. Because with Polyphemus, a lie protected him and the truth hurt him. That is the point of the “ Nobody” disguise.

Youtube. You and I need to have a discussion of "Do not recommend this channel" means, cuz I swear... every time this guy comes out with a new video, you blast it for me.

I don't like the guy. Like, when I heard there was beef between him and some mods of a challenge mod list and one of the fans told it, it was a pretty cut and dry "Both sides kinda suck. The guy sucks slightly less but at their order of magnitude, that difference means shit."

But then in the next video, he actually tells the story. And holy shit, it's completely different.

So, the story was that while this guy was doing a challenge mod of a game, the creator of said challenge mod went to the group that shows off all the challenge mods in a semi-competitive way said something like "Hey, I'm in a position where I don't want to be associated with this game/group. I'm doing my own stuff, and will be deleting the official website/host of the challenge mod."

The mods of the site are like "Yeah, sure. Thanks for the heads up, and we wish you best of luck in your original journeys."

Then the guy comes and is like "Hey, I'm trying to submit my completion of this challenge mod but I don't see it, what's going on?"

And the mods are like "Oh, sorry, they pulled support for the mod and we don't want to entice people to chase these and get a virus."

He's like "Well, could you like freeze the leaderboards after me and just show off those who finished it. I used the real mod and everything."

"No, sorry. But we want to respect the person who said they didn't want it shared anymore."

So the guy gets pissed and decides he wants to make his own. He calls the original challenge mod list site casual and his is for actual ones.

The mods are like "We understand you're upset about this, but we don't want to encourage this behavior, so we're going to have to ban you."

And he has this whole one-and-a-half sided beef with them. (Some say some shitty things about him, but saying "He's kinda shit at playing stuff and has to make up his own challenges to look good" is about the worst of it, and seriously is nothing compared to what he said)

Oh, and as a reminder, he's the one who shared this version of events. Willingly. Like... holy shit dude, this is a "Lie down and go home. You're what? 20? You can't even drink yet. Go for a ride, work on your studies. Fucking chill."

There's some they like sharing (It ignored me much faster on some CGP Grey videos, who I think has gone full AI bro years ago and isn't that fun to watch, but like... at least he's a big creator? I can get why him, but also chill on him. But this guy? He needs to chill, and it's not like he's big.)

Reblogging this cuz I was reminded of this cuz apparently his pet hypothesis is true? Or at least the person involved can’t remember but will try to do it honestly now just to prove he could.

So I had to see if anyone else ever brought it up anywhere recently and… I dunno? There’s one vid from someone else that’s more recent

But at least the guy involved has two ounces of integrity. Unlike this wanker who’s still bitter at someone moving on.

(Edit: Apparently the guy admitted it months ago when the video I was complaining about came out, though said he didn't watch it, which good, cuz I imagine he'd be defensive if he watched it. I didn't watch it, but knowing the guy who made that video, I can't imagine it's anything but "Why not me")

The more I sit on it, the more my reaction to all the people is "It's a headcanon. It's a nice one. Really fun, would like to see what you do with it, but I find the chances of the author acting on it to be relatively slim. Wouldn't be upset if it's real tho."

Ink Theory is something people are going gaga over and we don't have more than the analysis side and an elevator pitch of what we'll see in part 2 from the creator but it's gonna be a lot harder sell for me.

That said, the idea behind Ink Theory would make a killer idea for a game, not sure if it's this game, though.

Like seriously, Device Theory is excellent, when you have 10 hours to kill, watch it regardless of how you feel about Deltarune, because it also examines things like player behavior and will make you think about how you interact with fiction.

It's not the biggest reason I'm ditching XIV, but certainly a good section of Part 3 did make me think a bit about how I used the game. Even if it took another year for me to even start to think about taking breaks, and almost 2 for me to start this.

But there've been quite a few extrapolative branches that have been pruned, even if the trunk of the theory is still healthy and in an all-but confirmed way.

(I also don't think it's going to be as big of a part of the game as Mollystars thinks it is, but it's still nice to see how the game examines the fourth wall and diegesis through the game building a bridge reality between the player and the game's reality as a metaphor for the suspension of disbelief)

But seriously, if this was an academic paper or thesis, I would eat it. It's great and it's an analysis first and theory second.

You know you hit it big time when people take your theory as a given for a work in progress and uses it to build off theirs. (Even if it's only possibly true in the most elevator pitch way)

(Sidenote: The theory posited was interesting, but also at best badly described through trying to attach it to Device Theory and possibly Ink Theory, and more likely just... poorly thought out.)
