Manami and Emi at Yuri Yamada's Podcast

Emi and Manami decided they wanted to appear on "If You Can't Sleep, Drink Some Tea," or NemuCha, which is Yuri Yamada's "little things" podcast (she's the scriptwriter for the Tsukutabe drama, by the way) and asked Yamada if they could, even if it was short notice. It was Emi. She wanted in after seeing some friends also guest on this podcast. She knows Yamada as a friend at this point, too, so it was easy to get a hold of her, but then she shocked Yamada by saying she'd ask Manami to join in. Lo and behold~

It was mainly to tell Yamada how much they liked the draft of her newest book, which is coming out next month, but they mostly talked about Tsukutabe and the miracle connections that happened behind the scenes. The producer of the drama was also "in the audience" and, while you can't hear her for most of the episode, she is referred to a lot AND I did give her a soundbite in the document.

Richard Williams on Norman Rockwell:

“For most people, he was the painter of ‘America,’” he added. “But even he said his vision was what he wanted ‘America’ to be. It was a mythical ‘America,’ a place where all people were decent, honest and full of good will. His work was full of gentle humor that made you feel a little better; even if you knew it wasn’t really true… you just wished it was. My parody of Rockwell’s painting simply says, ‘That myth is dead.’”

I think it’s relevant to add that even Norman Rockwell chose to leave his cushy job at the Saturday Evening Post because he wanted to make artwork that was more radical. The Post had rules that wouldn’t allow him to do artwork depicting black people as anything other than servants. The job paid really well and that was a huge reason he continued on. But he wanted change that and so he moved to Look magazine.

A lot of people know about the very first piece he did when he left the post which was the The Problem We All Live With which depicts Ruby Bridges walking to school under federal protection.

But I don’t think enough people know about Murder in Mississippi which depicts three real civil rights activists who were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan and sherriffs. The magazine ran the sketch instead of the finished piece because they felt it had a more striking statement to accompany the article. Norman Rockwell would finish that version after publication which is here

Rockwell’s legacy is sanitized because he decided to maintain his job at the Post for so long despite his frustrations with not being able to express himself. The civil rights movement was just his final straw to change what he could with the little time he had left. Look magazine received a lot of hate for Rockwell painting these as well.

Another favorite piece of mine is The Right to Know which depicts an integrated populace questioning their government. In 1968, the year of Vietnam and the year the Fair Housing Act only just got signed in months prior:

But I think it’s important to include the caption Rockwell originally wrote for the piece as well. I think it represents how a 74 year old Rockwell felt about the America he believed in and the people in it:

We are the governed, but we govern too. Assume our love of country, for it is only the simplest of self-love. Worry little about our strength, for we have our history to show for it. And because we are strong, there are others who have hope. But watch us more closely from now on, for those of us who stand here mean to watch those we put in the seats of power. And listen to us, you who lead, for we are listening harder for the truth that you have not always offered us. Your voice must be ours, and ours speaks of cities that are not safe, and of wars we do not want, of poor in a land of plenty, and of a world that will not take the shape our arms would give it. We are not fierce, and the truth will not frighten us. Trust us, for we have given you our trust. We are the governed, remember, but we govern too.

I’d just like to briefly say even Rockwell’s seemingly feel good Americana pieces are often more political than people today realize for example

likely the most famous picture of a Thanksgiving dinner ever painted and you see it all the time.

What you may not know is its actual title

“Freedom From Want” it’s a part of a series of 4, including this now famous meme

“Freedom of Speech” These paintings were illustrations of FDR’s “Four Freedoms” speech where The President laid out a vision that would become what the Allies were fighting for in WWII universal human rights that became a part of the UN charter.

So this homey American Thanksgiving scene was also a bold statement that no one in the world should go hungry

Rockwell’s work was very political, he used that Americana small town America vibe of his work to make what he was saying feel very close to the viewers he was trying to reach and also his optimism of the human spirt but for sure not blind to the need to build a better world.

It’s worth looking at the other two as well.

Freedom of Worship is literally about religious diversity, a.k.a. the opposite of everyone subscribing to evangelical christofascism (note the range of skin tones and features and the fact that, while several figures make recognizable prayer gestures, at least one prominent dude is just stroking his chin in thought):

And the last one, Freedom From Fear, shows parents caring for their children despite news of Nazi horrors (the newspaper references the bombing of Britain):

These paintings are deliberately aspirational—descriptions of the world not as it is, but as it ought to be. No one should go hungry. Everyone should be free to express themselves. Everyone should be free to worship according to the dictates of their conscience—and, the chin-stroking man implies, if your conscience says don’t worship at all, then you should be free NOT to worship. And finally, no one should be afraid.

Norman Rockwell wasn’t perfect, but he would not be on the side of anyone trying to make more people shut up, or pray to a certain god, or go hungry, or fear for their lives or their children’s.

When people say they want Norman Rockwell’s America back, either they don’t know Norman Rockwell at all, or they need to get off their ass and make his America a reality for the first time.

This is probably the most awkward way to finally make this announcement on Tumblr...but hey! Leigh and I are moving into our first-ever house next month! No more dealing with landlords! But, unfortunately, there was a miscalculation on the closing costs and our down payment got increased by 2k.

Did you know that JRR Tolkien wrote an unpublished epilogue to Lord of the Rings? It's achingly, beautifully wistful in the way that only Lord of the Rings is. What you're doing is reverse osmosis, and if it's alkaline then there is a substance that's not water in there to make it alkaline. You can't purify water to a pH of 12, because pure water molecules have, by definition of how the pH system works and several phyics rules, a pH of exactly 7.

"Ooohh it has ~different~ sodium atoms." That's called an isotope and sodium isotopes aren't created by magic woowoo, and the magical ability of most isotopes is radioactivity.

"Low toxin" what toxin. Tell me their names. What are they doing. "They are endocrine disruptors" what part of the endocrine system? How? Do you have a source that doesn't try to sell you something?

"Just mix vinegar and baking soda to cleanse all the toxins of your fruits" you just created water molecules and CO2, and some calcium and acetate which don't have much chemical property. That's a science fair vulcano. And doesn't have acidic or alkaline properties to chemically influence anything. Just use tap water at this point. "My wood cutting board soaked in an alkaline solution from baking soda to clear out the toxins leaves a nasty looking soup" yeah because you were dissolving the wood with an alkaline solution. Congratulations.

"There is effective microorganisms in this ceramic bead and it can cleanse your laundry and dishes and prevent mold in your fridge and it works for years" what microorganisms exactly? How did you discover them? What are they eating? Are they resistant to 60 degrees and steam? Do they procreate in the fridge? Are they spreading out on all surfaces to prevent the mold or is it an air filtration system that works without airflow or is it just magic? "Put them in your flowers, they can reverse cavities, put them in your walls" what are they eating in my walls? What kind of microorganisms are they? Did you test the safety of those things in human bodies? Are they native to my biotope? How do they survive in those fucking ceramic beads?

"Just use vinegar it's magic" it's a mild acid. Like, cool, sure, it works for several things, but it doesn't have magic properties. It's just a mild acid. Lemon juice is too. And once again, if you mix it with baking soda, they neutralise each other and you get water. Which cleans a lot of things but you dont need to do *all that* to get your hands on some plain water.

On May 22, 2025, Kermit the Frog gave the commencement address at University of Maryland.

In the speech he spoke fondly of Jim Henson, saying

"He could always see the spark in someone. He saw the potential and he saw what was unique in each person. And he taught me what’s unique about you should always be shared. And that really stuck with me..."

He spoke to the graduates, saying that there will always be a place for them, even if the road is difficult. He encouraged people to find their people, care for their friends, and appreciate love of family and others, even if they aren't there. In doing so, he gave the advice,

"Rather than jumping over someone to get what you want, consider reaching out your hand and taking the leap side by side. Because, life is better when we leap together.."

To conclude his words to the graduates, he sang "Rainbow Connection" with everyone.
