An anon requested it so I did a quick doodle of Merida c: Hope you like it!
The rare “Spirit” or Kermode Bear. A rare color mutation of the Black Bear gives it this color.
"If you had the chance to change your fate, would you?"
Ashton and Adelaide's Prompts; My father used to tell me
My faither used tae tell me tha’ magic was’nae real.
“Help ma boab, Merida! Are ye goin’ on aboot those wisps, again, lass?”
Ah can remember his words clearly, but neither o’ us knew how right ah was.
It took a while; weeks - months even, since King Fergus and Merida had managed to hold a conversation after the curse that she had put onto the Queen. King Fergus had never been one to believe in magic, or the will o’ the wisps, it had always been her mother that filled her head with fairy tales and magic.
When her mother almost became a real bear because of her stubbornness and pride, Merida didn’t know how her father would have reacted. He had believed that his wife was dead, and he had almost lost his daughter too. He was a proud man, he wasn’t all too clever at the right times, but he was strong – he was fast, he was witty, he knew what to do in a crisis, even if it wasn’t always the best thing to do.
A witch lived in the woods outside their castle for goodness knows how long and Merida knew that her father wouldn’t have been pleased. Under his nose, he would say. Mor’du was one thing; magic was another, in her father’s mind.
Merida had come to take all the blame on what happened to Queen Elinor, and placed it onto the only thing she could think would easily be able to take the blame, magic. She wasn’t rational enough to calm down and actually realise the witch that had given her the spell that changed her mum also gave her the means to change her back. But, still, she would become a lot like her father after the bear incident.
She hated magic and witches. Why wouldn’t she? She had almost lost her mother because magic was real, it was available. It was something that she would have to overcome. Her father was most likely still in a state of shock from everything, finding out magic was real – what had actually happened to her mother and her brothers… and then there was her mother and how she must have been feeling. Everything may have been happy, the situation brought the Queen and Princess closer, yes, but there was still more to it than that.
A period of happiness and celebration for the Queen’s life and changing her back happened, yes, there was a small party and the surrounding clans in Scotland had left happy. Merida was told that she could find love and then marries in her own time, but all of that meant little when it came to the fact that magic almost tore their family apart.
There was a part of her that knew that that had been her fault, but her pride wasn’t letting her admit it. Yes, her pride was the thing that caused it all in the first place, but she was working on that – promise.
Merida had come to get closer with her mother, but she had changed everything. She had changed her mother, she had changed her back, she had brought her family closer – but she had changed her own outlook on things. She had taken the magic out of her life. She had lost her childlike innocence. She had changed from that child that was giddily following the wisps through the woods. No, she was certainly gone.
If she never had to deal with magic again it would be too soon.

☮: Random Headcanon
When Merida gets angered by someone, she is known to keep a grudge for a long while. Even after an apology is received and she accepts it, you can bet your bottom dollar that this lass will still be holding whatever annoyed her against you deep down inside until she’s cooled down and found something else to be angry at.
☯: Pet Peeve Headcanon
One of Merida’s pet peeves is being dragged out of bed early in the morning when she just wants to lie in. She’s a lazy kid at heart and has always been one to hiss and moan to whoever tries to wake her up. This is why the maids are usually grumbling and unhappy throughout their mornings if they are on the receiving end of one of Merida’s early morning tantrums.
☄: Weather Headcanon
Her favourite weather is when it’s just been really hot and the sun has moved behind the clouds and the world is in that calm warm heat and the smallest breeze feels heavenly on your skin. She loves to watch the sunset and just be embraced by that sensation and most likely will spend every night like that with Angus in the field or down in the meadow by the glen, just watching. It’s one of her favourite things to do when it’s quiet and she’s by herself (or with Angus).

12: Favorite book genre?
What's a book?
Not really, Merida isn’t a big reader to be honest. She refers to go out and have adventures than stay inside and read. Most of the time when she was younger the only books that she read were books of history and things that she could use to learn for her princess lessons. When she was told fairy tales they were mostly told via her mother and she didn’t have books to read about them, which she didn’t mind.
Merida learned most of her stories from her parents, and although she knows books of fiction exist and has a couple – she doesn’t religiously sit down and read a couple of chapters a day. She prefers to be outside riding Angus, or climbing mountains, taking hikes or even swims in the lake. She is much more of an adventurous lass than a bookworm, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. This was so, as much as her mother would most likely prefer her to stay inside with a book upon her lap and her dreams in her head.
Where dark woods hide secrets, And mountains are fierce and bold, Deep waters hold reflections, Of times lost long ago.

10: Neuroses? Do they recognize them as such?
All the time.
Merida is plagued with neurotic thoughts when it comes down to the time that her mother was a bear. She blames herself for what happened even though at the same time she knew what she did was for the best. She never would have gotten the bond with her mother that she had now if she hadn’t gone to the crafty carver to change her fate.
Sometimes she can have moments of feeling unworthy in a person and as a daughter. She can have nightmares of the times when Mor’du had her pinned down ready to maul her and she also blames herself entirely for what could have happened; such as Queen Elinor turning into a real bear, forever. The last thing that she wanted was to hurt her mother, and she couldn’t shift the blame off to anyone else. Now she is plagued with what could have been, instead of what actually did happen.
These thoughts are rare and infrequent but they still exist. Most of the time Merida is easily distracted away from these thoughts because of her princess lessons, princess studies and how her mother still acts around her. It also helps that this is three years on and she doesn’t have to face with what could have been right then because she has what she has. Merida also is getting to move on with her life and hopes that that will help her put those neurotic thoughts to rest.
When it comes down to it, Merida doesn’t really realise that she has these thoughts and problems until afterwards and someone snaps her into reality. It’s something she will come to terms with, it will just take time. It’s hard to realise what she had done and the consequences and things she could have lost in doing so – but it just might mean being away from Scotland where everyone knew what happened, to actually come to terms with it.
8: Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging
Anyone else here ship Meriapple?
Although it sounds stupid the only thing in Merida’s life that she indulges in would be apples. She eats them more than anything else and she seems to have a fascination with them. I’m more than certain if she was given the chance that Merida would indeed date an apple. She always tends to have a supply with her somewhere.
She has a bowl of apples in her bedroom, something her mother isn’t too pleased with – when she’s in trouble Queen Elinor has once or twice removed the bowl from her daughter’s room until she was happy with her again. Merida loves the fruit and has done since she was younger when her mother took a sweet cake from her hand and instead placed an apple in her palm.
Merida doesn't really see anything wrong in indulging - especially in indulging in apples when that's harmless. If she had something she enjoyed doing that would upset someone else or hurt someone else, then maybe she'd have a different opinion.
7: Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time
When is she never wasting time?
Merida’s favourite way to waste time would have to be to go horse riding, perform her archery and practise falconry.
Out of the three the most frequent thing Merida does is performing her archery or horse riding. If you ever see Merida going around Scotland, it would be riding on the back of Angus, sometimes even performing archery at the same time! Then afterwards, Merida would most likely be found shooting arrows into the bull’s eye of targets.
Both of these were things that her mother detested Merida doing. Mostly because Queen Elinor didn’t think Merida should go horse riding on Angus the way that she does, so wild and carefree. She believed Merida should ride side-saddle and like a princess but Merida wanted nothing more than to have the wind in her hair whilst squealing for her horse to go faster.
Then there was the fact Queen Elinor believed that her daughter shouldn’t have weaponry. It was always going to be thanks to King Fergus that Merida had her bow and arrows and she would never forgive her father for that. King Fergus has always made sure Merida knew how to defend herself, more than just with her archery, but with sword fighting too – much to Queen Elinor’s fear that the princess would get hurt.
The thing she does the least often, but she still loves none the less, is her falconry. Of all the birds that she trains alongside her father, her favourite would be her own Kestrel, Nighinn. Nighinn is beautiful and normally listens to Merida and what Merida does – but also likes to scare King Fergus and make a fool out of him, something Merida normally gets a kick out of.
