The thing about gmmtv is they make some really good shows, some quite bad shows, and a lot of mid shows. This has always been true and always will be. It's just that the quality spread is not evenly distributed through time, so sometimes there will be a cluster of mid-to-bad shows and everyone starts fretting that gmmtv has gone downhill and will suck forever now.

And then sometimes there's a run of unusually good shows. Remember early 2023 when we had Moonlight Chicken, The Warp Effect, and My School President all airing at the same time? Heady days (and a Mark Pakin for every day of the business week).

Right now, for me, we're in another exceptionally good run. Me and Thee and Burnout Syndrome were excellent. My Romance Scammer is shaping up to be one of my favorite romcoms of all time, Only Friends Dream On is solid and compelling, and Love You Teacher is giving me free therapy every week. (Girl Rules is not hitting for me as well as it is for some, but it's great to have an ensemble of women being hot and messy.)

I don't expect this level of quality from here on out... by summertime we may well be saying "what the fuck has happened with gmmtv?" again. And that's my point... we ride the highs when they come, and shrug off the lows (or complain about them if that's more fun). I'm just thankful to have so many good stories right now.

Uploading this because I think it's interesting. Aou isn't explicit about what the backlash is that he is referring to but I think we can infer that it's possibly to do with kissing between pairs (although i don't want to assume that this is exclusively the case - there might be lots of things they were responding to).

But I do want to highlight what he says at the end: "it isn't just about the characters' sexual encounters. There are deep character arcs woven into every episode". Mix has said something similar in another interview (which I now can't find) - this series is less about who is sleeping with who but more about exploring the myriad of relationships - sexual, romantic, professional, famililal, friendship etc - between them. Which is what I think we've seen play out so far (and honestly what I've loved).

To be honest, I've been reluctant to post this here because I know opinion swings the other way but I think it's worth knowing so that expectations are realistic. If inter-pair kissing (i feel like I'm talking about species here) is what you want, I don't think you are going to get it. But I think there is still a lot going on that is worth watching for.

What I LOVE about Jack and Dean is that they know *exactly* how to manipulate the other person, *exactly* which buttons to press. It's there in how they talk to one another, there in how their bodies are around each other. The automatic gestures and caresses.

And it's why it's so shocking when Jack tries to kiss Dean...and Dean makes the choice to refuse.

Jack is falling back into old patterns and Dean? This is the new Dean.
