The fact that Mercer frenzies Brynjolf during the battle at Irkngthand says a lot more than you might think.

We know Mercer wasn't really the best nor the worst as a leader; personally, I believe it was because he became guildmaster at 19 or 20. That's besides the point; little Brynjolf (at the time) did a lot more as 2nd in command; he was basically doing what Mercer should've been doing + more. Brynjolf is the face of the guild, someone who can take responsibility while Mercer fiddles with the ledger and sneaks gold out each night, and whatever else Mercer does besides pace around his desk and yell at you even though you're no where near him.

Mercer relied on Brynjolf more than he thought he did, and needed to manipulate him one last time to try and get what he wanted, to get him to kill Karliah. Brynjolf could've done it without frenzy; he would've, but that would mark him as a traitor aswell.

Oooh... no magic, just a mask that lets me shapeshift, though I'd probably stay in my regular body most of the time to do crimes.
