Welcome, Friends!💙 A Little About Me!

Well its about time I got around to writing the rules and info about my writing blog. To start with - Hi, Welcome in! Feel free to call me Mercury or Blue or any form of those, I also go by she/her pronouns. I will do my best to respond to asks or any messages but I make no promise. The reason for that is because this blog and writing hobby is sadly something I cannot dedicate a lot of time to. I have finally graduated but that does mean I will be dedicating a fair amount of time to my new career! However, I am becoming more and more confident as well as finding more time to write so maybe I will be semi professional lol.

Schedule:

None what so ever. I do not have a stable enough schedule or enough brain cells for creativity to dedicate the time to write enough to post often. However, I will aim for every ~2 weeks but don’t count on it.

If you’re reading this, you’re already in one right place. I will say this however: DUE TO CURRENT TUMBLR T&C, IF THE WORK IS OVERTLY EXPLICIT IT WILL NOT BE POSTED ON TUMBLR. I will post something letting people know it’s been updated or posted but for actual content, check AO3.

So you can ask if I will write for this thing but chances are it won’t happen. Also I’m sadly stupid busy anymore and I am not a large consumer of shows/movies/games as I once was. This blog is primarily going to be a blog for CP2077, ME:A, MW2, and personal works and stories. If I do not have a fandom listed above posted: either wait, ask, or find a much better fanfic writer!

As of right now, the Ask Box is open! The only thing I ask is to please be kind. If you’re rude or open up with unexplained hostility: you will be ignored or blocked depending on how much I get annoyed. However,

This also means Requests are open. Ofc if your desired fandom is not listed above don’t hedge your bet on me writing for it. Plus, there are many many amazing talented writers on Tumblr and AO3 and I encourage you to seek them out, even if its not just me scratching all your fanfic itches, check out as many writers as you can. That’s what inspired me to start writing! 

Also I know rn I’m still a small blog, heck this blog is a just few months old and I’m just now posting the rules so growth is not exponential here. But that means, if I get flooded with asks and such I will take some time to get through them all. 

However, almost anything you want to ask is ok! What isn’t hopefully shouldn’t be too much of a shock: anything remotely sexual involving minors, graphic violence outside of the scope of cannon typical violence (especially to minors), noncon sexual scenes, graphic animal abuse (including anything sexual ofc), and self insert fics. Before anyone gets up in arms about the last one, as most anything on this blog its due to change. I am building up my writing confidence and one day I may open my writing up to self insert fics (i.e x reader & y/n).

Misc:

So I mentioned above, personal works will be posted here. I have had this fantasy story cooking up for a few years now. I have noting concrete but I’d like for it to possibly be episodic? Think Dracula Daily almost. Anything regarding that story most likely won’t be posted until late this year.

I debated about banning minors, but honestly with a big wave of people coming to Tumblr via TikTok (no hate honestly, welcome and please learn how this place works) I do not currently want to deal with younger fandom culture. You guys are still learning how fandom culture works, especially on Tumblr. Plus, I am not the best at tagging. I will miss things and Tumblr does not have a good working consent feature (like AO3′s) yet. I had unbridled access to the internet as a kid and teen and it was both a blessing and a curse. And personally, knowing the idea a minor is reading something explicit I wrote is very and deeply uncomfortable.

Of course if I miss-tag or forget to tag something PLEASE TELL ME ASAP. No judgment if I miss a squick or trigger. Honestly, if someone complains someone else wants something tagged I will ban you. We are not downplaying other people’s mental health in this day and age. 

Lastly, I will occasionally reblog from other fandoms, blogs, tips, other related things. They most likely won’t be tagged too. Final things to know: I have the last say on banning someone, interaction is greatly appreciated, and this blog’s activity will increase as I get more comfortable writing! I have finally graduated so that should help increase my activity and writing. However, my career has very inconsistent hours and weird hours (thanks to working outside 99% of the time) so much like the points on WLIIA the schedule is made up. Tumblr is settling with NYC’s human rights agency over alleged porn ban bias

The ban allegedly affected LGBTQ users disproportionately.

Gee, Tumblr would probably really hate it if you shared and spread this damning article … To the surprise of absolutely none of Tumblr’s LGBTQ users, it turns out the independent NYC human rights agency Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) found that Tumblr’s ham-fisted adult content ban in December 2018 disproportionately targeted LGBTQ users. The CCHR’s investigation revealed Tumbler’s moderation algorithms is demonstrably biased against queer content. As part of the settlement, Tumblr was obligated to review their prejudicial anti-gay moderation policies. Even more mortifyingly, they’ve also had to hire an expert on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) issues and provide unconscious bias training to their moderators. I frankly doubt Tumblr has learned a thing from this humbling experience. Just recently the Tumblr algorithm flagged three ancient posts of mine as violating their terms. All three “offenders” were vintage homoerotic beefcake images (softcore by modern standards) roughly 50 – 65-years-old by Bruce of Los Angeles, Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland. (These are of course pioneering queer artists who routinely faced censorship and imprisonment in the fifties and sixties. Plus ca change!). They've been visible on my page - corrupting viewers -  for years at this point. I appealed all three immediately. Only the Tom of Finland one was approved. The other two are now hidden. So, they haven't learned much. Apparently, Tumblr – who loves to declare how hip, youthful, inclusive and progressive their values are - wants to restore trust with their queer users. I’d recommend we remember their hypocrisy when Pride rolls around and Tumblr splashes rainbow flags everywhere and attempts to pink wash their image.

I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.

Saw my first post with someone admitting they used chatGPT to ‘write a fic’ which they then shared here on tumblr and on Ao3.

To be clear, using AI to churn out a piece of fiction is not writing.

Using a bot (possibly one that was trained using a scrape of Ao3, that is to say, the theft of work from every writer who has posted their work on Ao3) is NOT WRITING.

It is theft. It isn’t creation. It’s a regurgitation of the consumed collective work and effort and heart and time of every writer who has shared their work on Ao3.

‘I’m not a good writer’ is no excuse.

Want to be a writer? Put in the time everyone else does to practice.

Don’t feel confident in your work? Open yourself up to the same vulnerability and risk that the rest of us do.

You don’t get to use a fucking bot to vomit out an approximation of a story and pretend you’ve got skin in the game.

The sad thing? This bot-assembled fic wasn’t bad. It was bland, but it had internal logic, some passing context to character and canon. It wasn’t like those early AI art pieces that had surreal compositions and extra fingers. It wasn’t immediately obvious it was made by a bot.

In this instance the person who posted it admitted they had used a bot. Which, actually, I have some respect for. But it probably isn’t the first and it won’t be the last.

I don’t know that there’s a solution to this, but it is both hurting my heart and enraging me.

I think part of the issue here is that people who do this think of fic as an end product. As a thing to be consumed. As content.

That's not fanfic.

Fic, in its essence, is the act of creation, of transformation. It is critically analyzing characters, exploring ideas, relationships, societal values, the dynamics of love and sexuality... the list goes on. Fic is a process that encapsulates all of this, the effort to make something that means something. That says something about what it means to be human (yes, kinky smut included). That takes vulnerability and guts and love to put out into the world.

If you think of fic as content that is there to be consumed, then yeah, it makes sense to find a quick and easy way to produce it. If the point for you is getting attention (kudos, reblogs, etc) with little to no work, using AI is tempting. But that's a capitalistic mindset that entirely negates what fanfic is.

If we instead think of fanfic as a creative process, then AI fic is not fanfic at all. Call it something else.

To clarify for anyone confused:

I made my original post because this is the first time I saw it happening, despite the fact we all knew this was coming as soon as midjourney landed in the art scene and we heard about the ao3 scrape.

While my writing is my own, and I’m secure and proud of it, I’m not under any self-congratulatory illusion that I was that good when I started. Many of the fics I’ve read by first-time writers are similar to what this bot produced, and those writers still deserve basic respect and civility.

Anyone working under the delusion that ai tech won’t get better at its manipulation of the data is sadly mistaken. If you haven’t been following the ai progress on visual art, you might have missed that you can now request pieces to be produced in the specific style of an established artist. And the bots can do that now! They can make visual pieces almost indistinguishable from the original artist’s style—no matter how unique, or weird, that original artist’s style is.

My post wasn’t about me, or my writing. It was about the encroachment of ai and the accompanying cultural devaluation of human artistic expression outside of the work-based capitalist model.

It was about the impact of wholesale thefts of a community’s collective work.

It was about the meaning and importance of people’s generosity in sharing their genuine creations.

It was about vulnerability and the creative process being more important than the ego.

All the above. Though I would also add the Fanfiction is *community*. It is having a random idea and being able to go to other people with "wouldn't it be neat if..." It’s knowing someone's favorite bits about stories and characters and going "I wrote a thing for you, as a gift". It's about incoherent screams and memes and "I missed my bus reading this". It's about the people who can share your fever dream and nod their heads.... Word vomit into a document won't get you that connection because there is no substance there.
