Hey, you know what I noticed? Looking collectively at the books and movies of LoTR, every member of the Fellowship sings at some point…except Boromir.
The hobbits do a lot of singing in general, and Frodo even writes something for Gandalf in Lothlorien. Aragorn sings about Tinuviel and Legolas sings about Nimrodel. Gandalf comes on screen the first time singing “The Road Goes Ever On.” Gimli sings in Moria one drafty night.
And Boromir sings nothing. He does not get one moment to be anything but a warrior. No gentleness, no levity - only a lot of doubt they are making the right decisions, anger when his advice is ignored, and fear for his people.
But hey, you know when he gets to be song-adjacent? When he dies and Aragorn and Legolas sing a song about him.
Our man deserved some time to exist outside of war.
Rereading the Lord of the Rings series recently, and it's so fascinating to me how much the series is a denial of the typical juvenile power-fantasy that is associated with the fantasy genre.
Like, the power-fantasy is the temptation the Ring uses against people It tempts Boromir with becoming the "one true king" that could save his people with fantastic power. It tempts Sam with being the savior of Middle Earth and turning the ruin that is Mordor into a great garden. It tempts Gandalf and Galadriel with being the messianic figure of legend who brings salvation to Middle Earth and great glory to herself.
The things the Ring tempts people with are becoming the typical protagonists of fantasy stories that we expect to see. and over and over we see that accepting that role, that fantasy of being the benevolent all-powerful hero, is a bad thing. LotR is about how power, even power wielded with benevolent intent, is corrupting.
And its so fascinating how so much of modern fantasy buys into the very fantasy LotR denies. Most modern fantasy is about being that Heroic power-fantasy. About good amassing power to rival evil. But LotR dares not to. It dares to be honest that there is no world where anyone amasses that power and remains good.
I guess that's one of the reasons its so compelling.
not enough is said about the fact that ronans pov of ninos night is haha i made declan mad and i barely even got in trouble for it. 🙂 eating pizza with my friends now and we dont even have to put up with my dick brother. 🤨 wait what the fuck why does adam have a crush on that waitress girl. thats not allowed. i literally got him to let me drag him around on a moving dolly last week thats like third base. act normal make fun of him about it. 😤🚶♂️i need to go outside. i need to punch 👊 something. (declan reappears with a lecture ready) oh perfect and theres my 🎯 target. (gets chewed out by gansey after beating declans ass) time to lock myself in my room for 3 hours and blast shitty edm until gansey falls asleep so i can get wasted at church after i beg god to tell me what i am (wakes up in a drunken haze on the pews) (is holding a screeching baby bird) 🐦⬛ why not. this might as well happen
i’m still so upset about noah being forgotten.
because what do you mean blue won’t remember that he was her first kiss. or that he always pet her spiky har. or that he would do anything for her. or that he would ask her out if he was alive. god, she may even have a scar on her face from noah’s unintentional attack and not know about where it really came from.
because what do you ronan won’t remember that that they were listeing to murder squash song together. or that they were building ramp. or that they were throwing things out of window (and well, throwing noah too). or that he wrote “remembered” on noah’s car.
because what do you mean gansey, who always thought that he was nothing to his friends and that they didn’t really care about him, won’t remember that he once had a friend who slid from time for him. who chose to be forgotten so that gansey could live.
did you at least kiss the brick before you threw it
codependent teenage frienships are basically coke

The fastest way to accomplish The Project is to cease being afraid of The Project. The Project cannot maim you. The Project cannot kill you. The Project is more afraid of you than you are of it. It is okay if The Project turns out differently from how it was in your head, and it is okay if it has flaws. You are capable of engaging with The Project.
fuck it, i'm curious. reblog and tag with the first fictional death to ever rewrite your brain chemistry and/or make you cry like a baby. mine was ares from the underland chronicles (who, for context, was a giant bat.) to this day i will weep if i think too hard about it. okay, go.
rose from martin the warrior. what do you mean blunt force trauma exists in kids books???/ still broken about this one. martin wanders the world for the rest of his life missing her UNGH. my dad walked in on me sobbing like my world had ended at like age 7 and out of panic briefly forbade me from reading the series anymore
as a merthur fan, i think i may not have outgrown my trauma bond to the star crossed lovers trope
we can’t talk here contact me in my dream tonight
kavinsky to ronan:
i ask in response to your addition to the ‘thank you ao3’ post — what do you suggest we do? about ao3? about censorship?
hi friend! i don't have a ready solution, i just figure for the sake of integrity we cannot leave real issues like that out of the conversations we have around censorship-- even if we decide it's a price we're willing to pay
god i love when the exclusive mention of Muslims across a prominent author's 520 works is about a terrorist organization that has killed millions of actual muslims!!! thanks for reminding me i have to be on guard even in fandom spaces and then blocking me when I raise the question!!!!!!!!! idk whether to rage or cry tbh 😝
why is this so acceptable? why is literally The Most Praised and Prominent and ao3-guardian type author on board with ts
Love stories where the characters are trapped within their tragedies. Stories where the characters are a little bit aware of their narrative prison. Stories where being an audience member makes you complicit in their torment. Stories where the characters hate you for witnessing their suffering. Stories where they’re trapped by the very nature of the tale’s existence. Stories where the only way to save them is to stop watching.
I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.
and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
everybody say thank you ao3
and replies are restricted...
I get the point and in our current moment we experience horrific censorship in every way, but I raise you for example, (RPF) pedophilia? this is still a difficult question and something we ought to consider, *even if* OVERWHELMINGLY ao3's anti censorship stance has led to a flourishing of the arts with a diversity and sincerity rarely seen, and *even if* OP is saying that they're not encouraging it, it's a reality of this system
thinking about how, when adam and blue were going out, they argued because adam didn’t talk to her about things
which is exactly why blue ends up with gansey, who calls her at ungodly hours just to talk about mundane shit, and adam “i don’t want to talk” parrish ends up with ronan “the fuck would i talk about” lynch
