how do you find motivation to draw? it's like..... i want to draw the ideas out of my head and then i feel miserable because the drawing doesn't look right because i have no enough skill.
Hi! My motivation comes from emotional attachment I have to the things I draw, but I don’t think that’s the answer to your problem so let’s dive in deeper! :)
To draw something you have to first understand what you are drawing, and that knowledge gives you the flexibility with the subject matter. Beginner artists try to tackle all problems at once and that’s just not the way to go. Let me use a handy dandy metaphor to explain why;
Drawing is a lot like playing piano: if you want to play first you practice your right hand (higher notes), then you practice your left hand (lower notes) and only then you bring them together, and practice super long: first slowly, then picking up the pace until you can play the entire piece smoothly. Drawing is and should be treated the same; The only difference is that art has many more “hands“ aka elements to it: there are colours, composition, shape language, light, contrast etc., and even if one of those elements is somewhat off it can disrupt the entire piece, just like hitting the wrong note while playing the piano.
Imagine someone sat you in front of an instrument, handed you the notes and said “now play me a beautiful song” - almost impossible to do! Especially on the first try! That’s why drawing can be sometimes overwhelming and dissatisfying, and of course one would lose motivation to do it. And the worst part is, you’re the one forcing yourself to play (aka draw)! A real emotional conflict!
That’s why I’d say: try approaching the things you draw in small steps. Break them down and fully understand the components; use references and practice! Important notice: I say practice and not cram out your ideas in sweat and tears.
Don’t waste your ideas on practising. Let’s say you want to draw an elf on a unicorn flying through the sky. Instead of wasting that idea and getting only a little bit of experience out of it, put that aside. First learn how to draw elves, how to draw horses, how to draw clouds, and only then bring all of that together to create your own vision of an elf on a unicorn flying through the sky. Note that all of the components I enumerated (elf, unicorn, clouds) are made up of their own elements too! Maybe you will have to spend some time drawing ears, or learn how the colour saturates when it penetrates matter and such… this well goes deep!
Drawing is a battle and you gotta come prepared! With swords and armour! And basic fighting skills! If drawing was killing a dragon then you might wanna defeat a few lesser bandits first before you go face the real big monster! I can’t believe I’m using this metaphor now!That’d being said don’t put off your pieces indefinitely! If you wanna draw that elf on a unicorn then do it. If you want to learn new things then you gotta move on eventually. As time progresses you will get smarter, know how to go about practising and drawing! But you gotta give it some time, too :)
I collected for you some other asks from the past where I talk about studying art in a smart way and self doubt, maybe they will help you out too: 1, 2, 3I hope this helps! Have a nice day! :D
