Has anyone in this family ever even SEEN a chicken?

Language and Genetics.

Every so often on Tumblr, someone very excitedly posts about how X group speaks a particular way because there’s some sort of genetic trait shared among native speakers that somehow means they’re genetically inclined to speak language that way. I find this a very troubling idea because it really starts moving right toward the territory of racist 19th century ideas of “primitive” cultures and how these cultures have “primitive language”, and only European languages were suited to the modern world. So, for a site that has plenty of people who would dismiss genetics as a determiner of success, it’s a disturbing thing to see the same folks pass around what are rather racist ideas as if they somehow “make sense”. So please, let’s drop this idea that languages are somehow intrinsic or some sort of genetic memory of the people who speak them natively. (In a similar vein, can we also please drop the notion that language itself indicates how people think, rather than one’s culture doing that?)
