i really wanna think of something to ask u about ava & irina but im dumb and dont really understand any of the lore from the movie like what coi does and what the moon does so if you want you can just pretend i asked about something cool here and just go off

LMAO thank you I will just ramble about them (the coi is the Coalition of Iron, its one of the space stations left after the quiet rapture, they’ve got a pretty utilitarian view of people and they’re the ones who capture Simon— the main character of iron lung— after his station, Eden, attacks them.)

BUT OKAY so Ava and Irina are two people who started with genuinely good intentions but are so fundamentally ruled by their own egos that they ultimately corrupt anything good they could have accomplished, while also being pretty fucked up by their respective dystopian societies:

Ava is religious, and believes embracing faith can save humanity — however when she starts being embraced as a prophet, she is so obsessed with being taken seriously that she begins to manipulate the people around her to increase her own power. (If either of them are victims though, it’s probably Ava—she is being actively possessed by an eldritch fish monster, and used to being dismissed as crazy in a society with zero mental health support)

Irina is ambitious and obsessive, she’s convinced herself that she’s doing things for the right reasons, and genuinely deluded herself that sending people into the blood ocean is The Right Thing To Do. She wants to save people but more than that, she wants to be respected and valued—this is why she falls for Ava and Eden’s philosophy so hard. She’s also hella repressed by the COI’s general social structure and struggling w a society that’s only ever seen her as a tool to be wielded.

Miscellaneous rambling:

Simon isn’t like, immaculate conception or anything. Ava fully cheated on Irina bc she liked attention, and liked that the guy didn’t see her as ‘crazy.’ She doesn’t tell Irina bc shes like 90% sure Irina would kill Simon’s father, and wants her son to have living parents.

Irina is very hard on Ava jr. No nepotism for her!!! Her daughter is like a mini her but one that she can use to correct all her mistakes.

Irina recognizes Simon b4 he kills her! Her last words are (in Rust) “You’re Ava’s boy.”

Unclear if Ava dies from eldritch space fish possession or like, vitamin deficiency. Maybe both. But she dies before Irina, when Simon is about 14.

Irina likes to sing, it’s not valued by the COI ofc but she would hum melodies over the radio to Ava, and that’s how the two of them would primarily communicate.

So does Ava speak english(Im not sure if you made the COI speak a different languate or not if you did imagine I said that lol) or does Irina speak rust?

So Ava can speak ‘Old English’ (modern English) because it’s the dialect the church uses and the language their holy texts are in. However, because she’s using holy texts as her reference, she speaks in very flowery & highly metaphorical language. It annoys Irina.

Irina can speak old English because it’s the common language they use to communicate with other stations! However, she speaks it far less competently than Ava. She would never lower herself to actually learning Rust but the more time she spends with Ava, the more she’s able to pick up. (By the time of her death, she can at least understand what Simon is saying to her—the usual bullshit about how she killed his mom.)

Ava has no living family, Eden really struggles to feed & maintain their population, and unfortunately her parents passed away before her adulthood. She was primarily raised by the church.

Irina’s parents lasted a little longer than Ava’s, but similarly the COI cannot feed members who don’t contribute. She has a brother, who is a miner on one of the COI’s moon operations. Because of this, he’s often off station and they don’t talk much.
