This one didn’t quite make the cut, but I thought I’d share it anyhow! I tried experimenting with a scratchier, looser style here.
Literally for some reason I though this was sleepy hollow fanart

Today I went to see a production of A Christmas Carol. A few minutes after it started a man in a Trump shirt came in late with his wife (I assume). Not great audiences members--the woman's phone kept going off, but that's beside the point. However, that t-shirt It got me thinking about all the GOP congressmen who put this tax bill through and how a lot of them are probably going to take their kids and grandkids to see A Christmas Carol or read them the book aloud this holiday season. Or maybe even watch the Muppet version. And about how they insist upon this "war on Christmas." And align themselves with Christian values. But they apparently missed the goddamn point of one the greatest Christmas stories of all time. To use wealth to help those who aren't as fortunate, to spend time with those in poverty (because how can you understand a person's troubles until you've walked with them and seen it first hand?), --essentially to keep Christmas in your heart all the year. Dickens condemns the selfish businessman in this Christmas parable. The business who values turning a profit more than supporting his employees--not unlike corporations today. But did Scrooge go bankrupt because he decided to pay Bob Cratchit a living wage? Or because he donated to charity? Or any of the kind acts he accomplishes at the close of the story? No, he does not. He is still rich, maybe not as much, but how much money does one person need? And Scrooge is still wealthy, none of his giving changes that, but Tiny Tim gets to live. These congressmen today and these corporations value their profit margin more than making sure Tiny Tim gets to live--making sure that millions of Americans have access to the resources that they need to live is less important than adding to their coffers. If only the ghosts of Christmas could come to visit, but I don't think these politicians and businessmen should have to have divine intervention to change. They should seek it themselves by taking a moment to live and see and realize what the average American experience is. I fear that I cannot enlist a Christmas past, present, and future to visit every politician in Washington, but I certainly wish I could.

if Broadway doesn’t want bootlegs floating around then they need to get their act together and make legal recordings. you can say all you want that theater is meant to be enjoyed live, but the fact of the matter is not everybody can get to NYC to go to a Broadway show. not everybody can afford to take the time off of work and buy a plane ticket to NYC and buy a night in a hotel AND get the ticket to the show. people want to see the shows, that’s why there’s a bootleg market in the first place, but it’s unreasonable to expect that everyone has the time, money, and ability to make it out to the one place in the world to see something on Broadway, especially if it’s a limited engagement. so record that shit, slap some subtitles on it, and sell it so we can buy it legally.
Reblogging this every time I see it. Copyright is important for creators but it should not support cultural elitism. Affordability and accessibility of cultural content is key unless we want to live in a very divided society.
Broadway and theatre in general is for rich people, don’t forget.
What about like Fathom Events? Even if you still want it to be enjoyed “live” this is a perfect way to do it--a lot of British theater (I’m thinking the livestreams of Romeo and Juliet with Lily James and Richard Madden and Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch) has done this really well. It’s still a one night event, but hey, I can afford a $15-$25 movie ticket and a 15 minute drive to the theater. And fun fact, making something available like that only increases my desire to go and see it live if I have the opportunity. Example: I saw the livestream of Romeo and Juliet--I happened to be in England that summer and I saw it live because it was so good and I had the opportunity.
ok universe, i’m ready to feel good things. make me feel good things.
