Mischaracterizing her, complaining of her having traits they love in male characters, straight up ignoring her, villainizing her for getting in the way of M/M ships, blatant racism… Katara has seen it all.
She’s literally the last bender in her tribe… put some fucking respect on her name.
Within the fandom, she is frequently relegated to her relationships with male characters. Also, many people simply "do not like" her. I've seen people call her a bitch! I don't think she was ever bitchy. There is an added layer of racism; many people read her as first nations. Native women and girls are always seen as more aggressive by racists.
She is a badass
she's probably in here already but i gotta make sure she makes it. she better win this entire goddamn thing. people act like her being mean sometimes makes her an irredeemable bitch. Jesus christ like she's fourteen and her mom is dead and a war is going on. god forbid she processes trauma differently from sokka and zuko. Like Hello.
Reduced her to the Zutara (fake news) vs Kataang ship war, reducing her to the "mom friend," ignoring her complexity, refusing to let her character exist outside of her relationships with men and eroding it within her relationships with men, ragging on her for being traumatized by her mom's murder, flattening her character as much as possible.
This poor girl gets brutally flattened into either "mom friend takes care of everyone :)))" or "miserable spoilsport who is mean to the boys and always yelling :((("
Literally one of the most nuanced characters in all of tv, she WILL be recognized for her fantastic portrayal of complicated trauma and parentification!
shes a teen girl who has never had space to process her trauma and the one time she let herself be angry everyone decided shes a bitch
Is reduced to one of three things. Either "the mom", "the nag" or "flawless perfect angel" when being bounced back and forth in other people's shipping drama.
Katara is a character with so much complexity. Her kindness underpinned by a trauma, her caring instinct born from being placed into the role of adulthood WAY too early. Having to struggle to be seen as a fighter despite being one of the, if not THE< strongest bender in the group for huge chunks of the show. She has anger, she has bravery, she has purpose and she cares because she CHOOSES to and then has to struggle with the parts of that caring that hurt. Or simply don't come naturally to her. She doesn't grin while cleaning up the boys' messes, she dumps the half empty cooking pot directly on their head and tells them if they're gonna leave it yucky, THEY should wash it (metaphorical but something along those lines) She is more than just Aang's "prize", Zuko's "anchor" or Sokka's "babysitter".
Rey Skywalker:

Rey was perhaps not the most original character ever, but she COULD'VE been great if only the writing for her hadn't ignored her in favor of the white men around her and forced her into a really terrible toxic romance with the villain for no good reason.
first of all we’re introduced to her as this smart, brave woman. she can fix the millennium falcon. she can fight. she’s guarded. she’s eager to help people she barely knows. she has this intriguing mysterious backstory about being abandoned on jakku by someone implied to be a skywalker. she’s force sensitive.
she has a scene where she gets captured and interrogated by the main villain kylo ren, but actually to a good percentage of the fandom, kylo kidnapping her and torturing her friends and mass killing innocent people including his own dad is completely fine guys. bc reylos think kylo ren is hot so it’s fine. and to them, this interrogation scene means they’re in love and he’s just a tortured sad boy who needs a woman to redeem and fix him. which is basically what rey is used for in the following two movies.
also we could have had finnrey as a couple and as the two main protagonists (rather than kylo suddenly becoming way more centered) if people weren’t racist and misogynistic af and instead people went so hard shipping one of the most toxic ships of all time that disney seemed to cave and make it happen despite it making zero narrative sense whatsoever. Humiliating Racebent Characters: It's Becoming a Pattern (Fantastic Frankey, TikTok)
There is an uptick on writers brutalizing and humiliating glamorous characters after they've been racebent to Black, and it's concerning me. Spoilers if you haven't seen House of the Dragon, Interview with the Vampire [Lestat], or The Odyssey.
Now I am one of the people who very much enjoys racebending. When it's done well, especially for adaptation of projects that are old and not with the times and homogeneous in the white direction, I'm all for it!
For a very long time, Interview with the Vampire in particular was my go-to when I gave examples of a good racebent character. But after watching the [3x7] finale of The Vampire Lestat--and reading a Substack article from one of the Black writers [A. Zell Williams] who was unceremoniously fired from the show; and then finding out that the writer of that finale was a white woman [Hannah Moscovitch]--I had to investigate.
Because within the span of three weeks, I noticed three very glamorous, beautiful characters be humiliated while racebent.
Before, it had no issues; it added context of brutality and humiliation. [But now it has been done] in a way that really made me uncomfortable. And I think really reflects the state of our country and where art is going. Because things have been skewing conservative in a way that I don't like. From that last season of Euphoria, to this film coming out about there being a sex purge where single people can only have sex one day a night, I'm so interested to see how they're enforcing that. It is clear that there is a statement being made and I don't like it, not one bit. Now that it's bleeding into fantasy, it's upsetting me and my homegirl.
Let's start off with The Odyssey, and Helen of Troy. There are spoilers for this, because it's not a part of the poem. There's been huge controversy around the casting of Helen of Troy and having Lupita do it. I don't know if genuinely Nolan believed that Lupita Nyong'o is the most beautiful woman and can launch 1000 ships. I personally think she can, but I don't know what this white man thinks, or if he wanted to drum up controversy like Helen of Troy; having this meta-war start over her online. What I do know is after he cast this Black woman to play Helen of Troy--which was historically played by a white woman, and you know, the general public now sees as a white woman, even if that's not a real character--he decided to add in the mutilation of Helen of Troy and disfigure her face. And so us seeing a Black woman as the most beautiful woman in the world is now a legend. We don't get to see her in that moment. Thank God [Nolan] made Helen's twin sister [Clytemnestra] identical, so there were moments we got to see Lupita without all these scars. But it was something I noted and didn't like--but I let slide.
And the week before I was watching House of the Dragon--which is on a generational run; the show was doing so well. Same thing happened to a character named Rhaena in the book Fire and Blood, which House of the Dragon is based on. The character that we see on the show is actually a combination of two characters. One is a commoner named Nettles, and then Rhaena Targaryen, which is a member of the royal family. In the books, Rhaena Targaryen is a girly-girl who wears pink and gets a pink dragon. And while Nettles is a commoner and a little bit scruffy, being rough, I would also like to note that Nettles is one of the only canonical Black characters in the book. And we had to watch her conflation with this princess; which I was on a fence on whether or not I liked, because yes the story is bloated and there are a lot of characters, so I was fine with the conflation of the two. But I don't know why my girl is out here down bad looking like a crackhead!? There is no reason in the story that she needs to be down like this. The character of Nettles never loses control of her dragon the way that we see the character Rhaena do on the show. She was living in a castle with her father figure Damon Targaryen. We never hear that she rough and unclean. Aside from that, Rhaena Targaryen is a very glamorous character, that we're not seeing in that way. And I feel like even if she was on the run, I would have made sure she at least was kept. So I know they're trying to show that she's desperate, but I'm not feeling it. Because she didn't have to go out like this. Why not just dye her hair black so she wouldn't get caught?! We already saw that the hairdressers in Westeros have that good sh*t, so? So there was no reason for her to look like this crackhead.
Those two strikes weren't bothering me until I watched the finale of The Vampire Lestat.
And it's funny--I've been fighting online for weeks about how the writing felt inconsiderate. Especially with them changing the race of the characters. There were moments in the first two seasons [of Interview with the Vampire] where I felt like: Okay, they're not considering how this looks; or they're not ballsy enough to say outright what's going on. But it was very clear for this season, The Vampire Lestat, which finally has a white lead. Because that's how it felt with the way that they were promoting it and talking about how you didn't need to watch the first two seasons.
There were too many characters that were race-bent for the Interview with the Vampire. One is Louis, one of the main characters; and Claudia, his sister/daughter, the child that he makes his white lover create, to hopefully give their tumultuous relationship new life. During the first two seasons of Interview with the Vampire, where they had so many Black writers, the character of Claudia wasn't that problematic, and the race-bending actually improved the character. Then we got to the biggest part of her character, which is her death [in 2x7]. Now, they did follow the book in terms of her being on trial and her dealings with the theatre company. What they did add was Santiago, one of the main antagonists of the season, desecrating her body and jerking off with her remains; acts that would occur to Black people in America, where Santiago was revealed to be from [⚠️ this is incorrect, he's British ⚠️]. That's after the writers added in them mutilating their bodies, by cutting her Achilles, and making her look crazy. We get another taste of in the third season by the white writers, when she comes back as a ghost and cannot walk around because of it [being hamstrung like a runaway slave].
Now let's get to Louis. All of a sudden, Louis is not just a villain--which, we always knew he had problems and he wasn't the best of characters--but he was being punished every two seconds, and also being framed as a villain in a way that I didn't think was true to his character and true to how the characters around him should be feeling. And you know what? I got over a white writer [Ryan Kattner & Kevin Hanna] writing his daughter/sister calling him a "nappy-headed slave"--which sounds crazy, I know! But I gave them the benefit of the doubt, because I didn't do my due diligence, and I thought maybe that's how these Black people saw each other; insulting each other because I've done worse. I remember in college I called a girl Frederick Douglass because she got me upset, and that's not right. It was very racist. I apologized after. But you get what I'm saying? I was okay with the insult, thinking that was coming from a place of knowledge.
But it was after I saw this episode [3x7, the finale] where two of the main characters were beheaded--one white, one Black--and they were treated totally different; because the white character Lestat (who had the biggest grievances [with Armand] of all the characters involved of the dual beheading) got the decency of us never actually seeing his severed head [conveniently hidden in a bowling bag] besides when the act happens. Everything is shown from his point of view, so instead he gets a Bojack Horseman dream/death state, until his head is returned to his body. However, our Black character [Louis]--who once again is glamorous, handsome and enamoring--we are forced to watch this man's head on a spike while his body reaches for him.
And this is after the character Louis talks to Daniel one of the writers [⚠️ Louis told this to Lestat in 1x3 ⚠️] and explains how Black men's heads were put on a spike as a way to humiliate them, and to remind Black people that they are less than people.
And what's worse about us having to watch this Black man be humiliated when his white counterpart didn't get the same onscreen is the fact that the man who orchestrated this beheading was a Brown man; and he and his Brown doctor ended up livestreaming it! I want to say it again: They had two Brown characters have someone livestreaming on the dark-web. If you guys are too young to understand why that is problematic: Back in the day, when al-Qaeda was the Big Bad of the US, videos of [captives] being beheaded was livestreamed all throughout the US, and used as a way to fearmonger us towards, you know, al-Qaeda and Muslim people overall. I'm not here to talk about politics I'm just talking about the correlations.
All in all what I'm saying here is that this is all intentional, and I'm not messing with it. I do like racebending, but not at the cost of these characters losing their dignity. We're taking these characters and we're being put in worse positions.
And that's only when white writers do it, because when you think of someone like Ryan Coogler who racebent Namor--(I know his name was [pronounced as] Nay-mor but when he was racebent to be indigenous Mexican his name became [pronounced more color-consciously as] Nuh-mor)--and guess what? He got to be a king with infinite strength and power who never was down bad! Hair was slicked, skin was always moisturized, and he was always shown respect--even when he lost.
And you guys can say I'm on a high horse, but at this point somebody needs to advocate for this, because it's very clear that something's being done and it's f*cked up. Let me know in my comments below.

one thing i love about helly in severance is that she really drives home how gender conformity is learned, not innate. like she's dressed as a professional woman, in heels and a skirt and makeup, but her voice and body language, all the little ways people perform gender, don't match it. she doesn't modulate her voice higher or modify her speech to be less blunt. she's got her shoulders up in a very tense, afraid posture (bc she IS tense and afraid) and she walks with a very purposeful stride. helly is helena without the years of training to be quiet and compliant, without years of being taught how to perform gender, so she just...speaks in her regular voice. has the posture of a scared little animal because that's what she is. it's gender non-conforming but it's not masculine or anything to do with her personal gender identity. she's just being a person, having realistic human reactions to the situation she's in. and so much of gender non-conformity for women is like this. you don't have to deliberately wear menswear to be seen as unfeminine. you can just not wear makeup or not shave your legs, just exist in your unmodified body and speak with your unmodified voice, and that's enough. i sometimes see art of helly in more masc clothing or trying on mark's suit and it's cute but i think reading her lack of "appropriate femininity" as a desire to present masculine kinda misses the key point that she is not acting like a man or a woman. she is simply existing as a human being
sorry for doubting anyone who's ever said that rolin is resentful of the black talent that made IWTV the masterpiece that it is. the man fucking hates the entire project. he hates that his writers had earnest love and compassion for those characters and used them to explore themes and dynamics that he won't even dare to acknowledge on his own.
and sorry to rolin because i honestly don't think TVL is going to be show that people will be returning to in 5, 10, 50 years' time.
It's not about Claudia's mischaracterization (which I don't even think happened), or that Louis didn't make any mistakes or whatever.
We had a whole season of Lestat acting like he was the sole victim of all these big bad wolves.
Louis, Armand. Even Gabriella, who's framed negatively by the narrative without any real context.
And you keep saying that we're seeing Lestat's pov, like we did with Louis' before. And I agree to some extent. But in s1/2, there were reality's checks. You had Daniel challenging Louis' memories (and Armand's version of the story) to get to the truth. These two seasons were about the truth. That Louis was not simply a victim, that he had to be held accountable for his own actions. That he had to held himself accountable for his own actions.
This is what this season is lacking. There is no contradictory.
And the one time the writers had the chance to actually do that, challenge Lestat's version of the story, they went with what we saw.
And what we got is Claudia spitting all those hateful words at Louis' face while Lestat is just sitting there kind of absolved of his own crimes, all the blame put on Louis and Claudia. This is the most violent the show has ever been.
Lestat is not learning from his mistakes. He blames Armand for everything that went wrong in the past, he is an ass to Daniel (he deserved it, but still), he never apologizes to Louis. There is no endgame here. Unless the endgame is to make Lestat blameless.
And unless I'll be proven wrong, I won't shut up about it.

1) Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% offended at the Nappy Little Head line.
It was totally unnecessary to talk about Louis' hair texture just to make a point about him being stupid/gullible/betraying her. 🤨 Claudia could've called him a Dumb B*tch again and kept it moving. Stupid little head, empty little head, whorish little head--IDK, the list goes on. 🤷♂️ If AMC wanted to have an "Authentically Black™ People's Argument", they could've easily had her just say something like: "How many times I gotta tell your Black a** to stop calling my name!?" A RESPECTFUL production that actually GAF about how the Black people watching this effing show feel about racially charged insults being used to demean something as sensitive as Black hair in The Blonde Long Haired Man Show would take that episode and dub over that word with something less offensive ASAP; but I doubt they'd do that, cuz AMC's writers BEEN antiblack racists this season. 🙄
In an all-Black writer's room with a predominately Black audience and an all-Black cast, the Nappy line wouldn't even be a problem. 🤷♂️ I'm Black; I've seen PLENTY of Black shows/movies where Black characters have been called Nappy-headed in heated arguments; calling each other the N-word, clowning their skin complexion, etc. But it doesn't make a blip on the radar, cuz those insults aren't being used in mixed company. Those shows aren't intended for (potentially/exclusively) racist AF white/non-Black eyes & ears. They're certainly not being used in front of a WHITE character, in order to paint a BLACK character in a more negative light; when the white man's looks aren't being dragged in equal measure.
Why are LOUIS' physical features open for racially charged insults, and not LESTAT'S? In a fandom where Louis ALREADY has such little representation or appreciation for his Black features in everything from fanart that refuses to get his skin tone, nose shape, and hair texture right; to fanfics that refuse to even describe his Black features at all, in order to whitewash him for non-Black audiences that don't find Jacob!Louis physically attractive at all; and NEVER praise Louis' curly hair the way they glaze TF out of Lestat's hair. Which I'VE BEEN mad at!

Which makes Claudia's use of the word VERY pointed; not on HER side as an in-character insult used amongst Black people IRL to humble Louis, but on the writers' sides as non-Black people who are clearly FAR too comfortable insulting Louis every chance they get, coddling TF out of Lestat to not give him his fair share of slights & insults, and using a dead Black girl's VALID rage as a shield to hide their own antiblackness behind, in order to get a few more licks in at Louis as the character that all clearly hate and have BEEN hating all season long. That's my problem with the Nappy line.
There's NO need to come for Louis' physical attributes at all; especially when Lestat's physical features aren't also being insulted as the ACTUAL white man who made them BOTH and who put them BOTH in the unfortunate situation that resulted in Claudia dying in that Trial.

I don't see Claudia calling Louis a slave as offensive--IMO. 🤷♂️ I had a long conversation in the comments section of my OG post detailing precisely what I said (esp these x x), and how I think about Claudia's CONSTANT use of Slavery as a defining attribute of both Louis' AND her own position under MASSA Lestat's roof--
Specifically because of the LENGTHY post I made precisely about the importance of the distinction between the tropes of FIELD Slaves like Claudia who fought for freedom; vs the HOUSE Slaves like Louis who loved the white Massa and actively sabotaged the revolution:

Louis is not just the minor/inferior offspring of Lestat, but he's also the source of all of Claudia's problems; the same way Eve is universally (yet UNFAIRLY) blamed as the source of all mankind's problems. Claudia BEEN said that about Louis when she demanded why he didn't take her to a hospital; and Louis agreed that there was no excuse; he was selfish. (And *EYE* also said Claudia was out of her frikkin mind thinking a hospital was finna save her when she was half dead). I DO NOT think ghost!Claudia was being fair to Louis, but she never has been--he's ALWAYS been just "the housewife" (House SLAVE) to her. 🎯

Louis' Lestat's "Black Queen" not just cuz it's a chess reference and Claudia's the chessmaster who beat Lestat at his own game; but also cuz it dehumanizes Louis as a piece in HER game to KILL Lestat; to rub in the fact that she got Louis to help her do it--SAVAGE. 😈👌
But also how naive she was for thinking that SHE (as a CHILD) could come between Loustat as a married couple--that YES, did prioritize their selfishness over her--ESPECIALLY Lestat when he LET HER DIE just to save Louis--which she's PISSED about.
That's REAL ISH. PLENTY of kids HATE their abusive parent and think it's their JOB to do something to get in-between & stop them--and if they can't stop it, they ALSO hate the abused parent for being the useless AF doormat SLAAAAAVE doing EFF ALL to help themselves; esp. if/when the abuse trickles down to the KIDS.
So while I see ghost!Claudia's rant in 3x6 as more or less consistent with what we've seen from her already (barring the rampant contradictions & downright inaccuracies she made that I already discussed), I also think it is a severe mistake for ANY side of the fandom to preemptively accept ghost!Claudia's rant as wholesale objective truth in the Subjective Truth Season; the Emotional Truth Season--when even in the BOOK canon ghost!Claudia's veracity was up for debate; despite her anger towards Louis (AND LESTAT) being 100% VALID.

Blackness isn't a monolith. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, the same way people shouldn't automatically expect me to agree with everyone. 🤷♂️ I already knew going into 3x6 that my take wouldn't be popular--but I'm not here to be popular; I'm here to speak MY mind, and explain how *EYE* see the themes of this show playing out.
There's Black people watching this show who HATE Lestat with a burning passion and can't stand that Louis' even with him at all--none of my IRL Black friends are Loustaters, and they ALL look at me like I'm crazy for even shipping Louis with his white abuser at all; regardless of if I'm defending Louis or cussing Lestat out or what. Half the Bipoc Loumanders in the fandom blocked & ignored me YEARS ago and said I was cooning for Lestat when I told them Armand was bad news and to not fall for his immaculate cleavage.
So yeah, while I DON'T hold the same opinion or have the same reaction to the SLAVE lines in 3x6; I respect & appreciate everyone who's speaking out against their inclusion in an already deeply problematic season and an already highly sensitive scene. Esp. since I can see the accurate point made by @meanmisscharles that the distinction b/t House Slave vs Field Slave is actually too nuanced for the non-Black writers in S3. 💯
So yes, I'm probably giving the writers too much credit about the Slave lines; it's a ME thing.
But I DO wholeheartedly agree with everyone that the Nappy line should've NEVER been used at all. ❌🙅
The showrunners chose to make Louis and Claudia black and experience life in the Jim crow era. They chose to do the full race swap in season 1, not just making the characters but also the story black. They chose to racialize the violence that both Louis and Claudia face throughout the first season. No one was forcing their hands and they got praised for the stuff they did in the first two seasons, for bringing in the added nuance of systemic racism. So why should I as an audience member of colour give them any grace when they choose to write dialogues containing numerous racialized and gendered micro aggressions not just towards Louis or Claudia but also minor characters like Dee or Lemuel who weren't necessarily supposed to exist as they are (black) in the show?? Why is Daniel (a white man) who is supposed to be a Pulitzer prize winning investigative journalist who was lecturing Louis on his own story about the racism he faced referring to him as a "bucket of Louisiana fried chicken"?? Why is Armand textually belittled for being a CSA victim while Lestat is endlessly provided with grace and understanding in the text of the show for his victimhood?? Who thought it was alright to adapt a scene from the books involving white characters talking about parental betrayal and insert racially charged dialogues (that too old school racist shit not even the n word) when it was unnecessary to preserve the nuance of the scene?? Why is this show denying the racialized nature of domestic violence that they chose to portray in S1 ??? I cannot help but look at this season of the show as a sign of the times tbh. IWTV aired during a very liberal era of entertainment and now that fascism and white supremacy is on the rise everywhere white entertainers have become comfortable enough to fall back into old habits. Never thought this show in particular would have this problem when I watched the first season but it is what it is I guess
I don’t know what the hell is going on in that writer’s room but the language used in that Claudia scene were anti-black and violent. It is incredibly irresponsible writing. “Slave” repeated multiple times from Claudia towards Louis and the use of “nappy-head” and Claudia denouncing her “miserable black life”.
What the fuck?? All that good will earned for handling black characters well in seasons 1 & 2, flushed. For what?
ok so they did it. they made Claudia the liar. and lestat "not the abuser". I actually am stunned. and can this white ass writing room stop being racist hello. there's actually no reason for it. I don't even understand what's happening anymore I have genuinely lost all faith in the writers and like am finding myself wishing we didn't get a 3rd season at all if it was going to be like this. im. I'm so angry.

I am genuinely appalled. What are these writers doing. Why is everyone racist??? Why is Daniel calling Louis Louisiana fried chicken?? Why is Claudia calling Louis a slave with nappy hair?? Why is Claudia just a plot device whether she is a memory, grief pushed onto a random girl, or a ghost??? Why did Louis and Lestat just stare open jawed why she expositioned dumped some craziness?? Why do the writers hate her so much she suffers in death without Madeline. Why do Louis and Lestat walk off that conversation and start planning their life together like nothing happened??? Why is this show tearing Louis to pieces as the bad guy and Lestat as the poor misunderstood little guy??? Why the FUCK did any of the changes to Gabrielle (cause i don’t feel like calling her Gabriella) happen?? What does this change about her and her story?? Why is devils minion getting so side lined??? Why are they giving an amazing actor like Assad Zaman like 10 minutes of screen time max this season?? Why is there a random time jump?? Why are the band vamps, when did this happen, why did this happen, should we care about them?? What happened to characters like Christine, Dee, and Jarda getting dropped from the show suddenly? Why is everything off screen??? Why are there barely any Nicki scenes?? WHY ARE WE HELL BENT ON RUINING THIS SHOW THAT WAS DO GREAT???
Rant over. I’m just so confused and upset. I’m sure this last episode will be a doozy, i’m just hoping it doesn’t fuck up anymore than this past episode has 😞
