I always thought Caleb's second book contained his research and planning relating to time travel. That he was actually writing letters to his parents - which he intended to one day give them in person - is, for me, one of the most vicious emotional sideswipes of the finale. I get teary-eyed if I think about it for too long. Caleb Widogast was filling that book with desperate hope, and love, all those imagined conversations papered over a gnawing void of grief underneath. He carried it with as much care and reverence as he did his spellbook - the compendium of all his arcane knowledge and achievement. That he burned a high-level teleportation spell to send it just a few feet into the earth of their graves feels like a gut punch. His parents are so close, and so very, very far away, beyond the reach of the words that Caleb spilled onto those pages.

I wonder if sometimes he misses the weight of the book by his ribs, and the reminder of them so close to his heart. And then I wonder if sometimes he feels the empty space there and looks up to the starry expanse of the sky instead, and finds some comfort in the reminder of infinite possibility, where countless paths branch only forward, and that in each one is his memory of them.
