laughing at the idea of having to explain to a non tf2 fan how this is one of the most emotionally impactful scenes in the entire lore
Two main characters are Spy and Scout. They are both mercenaries hired by the same company, who work on the same team. They notoriously do not get along and are complete opposites.
Also, Scout grew up without a father, but is convinced that his dad is the famous singer Tom Jones, who he’s had a lifelong obsession with.
One of the longest running jokes in the tf2 fis the idea that Spy is secretly Scout’s dad. This theory started because Spy had an affair with Scout’s mom many years ago and has had feelings for her his whole life. As it turns out, Spy actually IS Scout’s dad, and knows he is, but fucked off when Scout was a toddler and basically chose to never be part of his life until they were reunited by chance years later as mercenaries. Some of their teammates have caught on (Sniper and Heavy, specifically), but Scout refuses to believe Spy could ever he his dad.
Some years later, Spy and Scout are both in Australia for work. Spy is saving their teammate Sniper, and Scout is fighting in a nearby battle. Scout is mortally wounded, and just before his death, is found by Sniper and Spy.
At Sniper’s urging, Spy decides to confess the truth of their relationship to Scout in his dying moments. Almost immediately, however, he changes his mind and instead decides to keep up Scout’s fantasy that his father is Tom Jones, to give him peace as he dies.
Spy can essentially shapeshift (forgot to mention that), so he makes himself look like Tom Jones and then tells Scout basically everything he’s wanted to tell him for years but never could, and it’s a really emotional moment.
After that, Scout dies in Spy’s arms and we get this really heart wrenching panel.
