“donghyuck,” your voice echoed in the dark practice room. it had to have been at least midnight. he’d been here for hours and he had given you no text messages or calls and you figured you would come and see what was wrong. the room was brightly lit as usual and there were a few water bottles next to the mirrors. you weren’t surprised when you saw the honey skinned boy in the practice room heavily panting afront the music that was playing.
this wasn’t the first time.
he was always someone who overworked himself. he was always someone who wanted to give his best performance. and risking his health for it was just apart of the process for him. there were days where he refused to eat. there were days where he refused to talk to you. and that broke your heart every time. you knew, time after time, that this wasn’t okay and that his body was suffering for it, but there was nothing you could do to stop him. he was stubborn.
tonight was different. you were fed up. you had thought to surprise him and make him something for when he did get back to the dorms since he didn’t look well recently. hours had passed, and you saw members come back and greet you. taeyong had even attempted to try and get you to go to bed, which was met with your refusal. they all knew well enough who you were waiting for. he would check on you a few times, labeling it as “getting a drink of water” and then go back to his room. you were grateful, but you were also beyond any humor.

it wasn’t that he was ignoring you. no, in fact, it was quite the opposite. he didn’t want to burden you or anyone else. everyone knew that he was a hard worker, and to get him to actually take care of himself would only earn a cold shoulder and an unwillingness to talk from donghyuck. this was just his personality. your impatience drove you to head out to find him, knowing you were the last thing he needed. but it wasn’t that he didn’t want to see you.
he didn’t want you to yell at him. he knew that you cared for him more than anyone else; he just didn’t want you to nag him at something he couldn’t help.
“donghyuck is a hard worker.”

the air conditioning in the practice room caught you by surprise, but you still stood your ground. it felt like the inside of a fridge when the air brushed against your face when you first walked inside. “donghyuck, do you know what time it is?” your hand began to sweat as you waited for his answer. he only stood there and said nothing. the music stopped, and you walked towards him to take his hand and take him back to the dorms. he wouldn’t budge. “please, just call it for the night,” you begged, only to have him shake off your hand. your lips formed a straight line as you stared at the boy in front of you.
“why do you care about what i do so much?” he finally spoke. you swallowed as he continued. “you aren’t my mother. you aren’t even closely related to me or even apart of the group why do you care so much about what i do?” his voice rose as he reached the end of his sentence. you rubbed the side of your thumb to your index finger in nervousness. “you haven’t been looking like yourself lately, i just—i just want to help you,” you responded, stumbling over your words.
“do i look like a charity case to you?” it felt like the air conditioner suddenly stopped. the door from the practice room opened, but neither of you looked in that direction.
“hyuck, that’s enough. it’s time to leave.”
it was taeyong.
without saying a word, donghyuck grabbed his bag and left the room. taeyong apologized to you, but you only shook your head. “i thought maybe i could crack him,” you told him as the two of you walked out together. “when he’s like that, he needs space. we all learned it the hard way too,” taeyong sighed. “i wish there was something we could do for him,” he added, and you only agreed. as the two of you parted ways at the dorm, you walked past the food ready for preparation on the counter. you sighed and went to pick everything up.
the only person awake left was you. it had to at least have been one in the morning. you figured you might try to make something in any case he does get hungry. you enclosed the food in a plastic container and labeled it with a post it that said ‘donghyuck.’ dragging yourself to your room, you couldn’t help but feel exhausted.
“do i look like a charity case to you?”
the few words echoed in your head. if he could face you right then, he would’ve told you he didn’t mean it. he would’ve told you thank you for showing up to make sure he’s okay. but there was only so much he could do. the night was young, for him anyways, and his stomach had agonized for something to eat. it had been that way for hours.
this wasn’t the first time he wanted to eat in the middle of the night.
he used to ignore it and try to sleep. he used to force himself to not worry about it. it was when he had gotten closer to everyone that he learned the skill of enjoying himself. and when you came into the picture, it only felt like he had to take care of himself. if not for his own well being, but everyone else’s. this time, the only person awake was him.
the next morning, a text message painted the screen on your phone.

a visit to the cafe down the road was something you did a few times a week. there was one pastry that kept you visiting, and today was nothing different. the way the scent of chocolate filled your senses and the sound of powdered sugar being dusted on a dessert was like an altered reality. your order didn’t take long and you sat at your usual table to enjoy yourself for the next few minutes to wake yourself up from the early morning.
it was almost the end of finals week.
as you scroll through your timeline, the refreshing of tweets only makes you feel more tired than before. your data never sucked this much in this cafe, but it seemed like today was just a day that required more sleep from you. cold brew coffee and food from your favorite patisserie chef would hopefully be the remedy to your exhaustion.
it seemed as if it was at an appropriate volume because you could hear a table near to you burst out laughing. you decide to screenshot the sender and text them a message.
you: do you just send strangers bad memes? is that your job?

the rest of the time at the cafe you spent talking to this person. the person later introduced himself as jeno and also had the same math professor as you did, despite having a different time. the cafe wasn’t very far from campus and it was often you would run into classmates. finals week was far from over, and you as well as anybody else knew that. as the periods passed by, you found yourself texting that jeno kid more and more.
you: how was last period’s?
jeno: could’ve gone better, i forgot one of the formulas tho:(

you: you aced the one from yesterday so

you scanned the room to find someone sitting at the seat you sat in days ago. his hair was black and he had already had a cup of tea sitting in front of him. he was staring at his phone when you had stopped in front of his table. “are you jeno?” he looked up from the object in his hands. he offered you to sit in front of him.
“you’re a lot nicer to look at in person,” he blurts. “thank you,” you respond, feeling shy. “did you get anything? i’ll pay,” he says, beginning to stand up. “no it’s okay i can get it myself,” you say, standing as well. the cafe had you order and then they prepared the food before you paid. “i sent you a bad meme the first time to someone i didn’t think was this cute, it’s the least i can do,” he winks. “jeno, are you flirting with me?”
before he answers, he’s already at the counter when they called for your name. “i’ll be paying for it,” is all you can hear from jeno at the table you stood at.

it’s funny how the world works.
one minute your soulmate doesn’t exist and the next theirs doesn’t either.
the summer season was greeting with open arms and you waved at renjun and jisung who were leaving. hands linked together, the two of them waved at you before disappearing around the corner. you stood at the front of the schoolyard, waiting for someone. you closed your eyes against the faint wind and saw the numbers faintly.

they had faded a long time ago. you had yet to tell him but you figured it would be best to not worry jaemin past his studies. it had taken a while, but the two of you were back to being close as you were. you could hear your name being called from a distance.
it was jaemin.
he was wearing that pinstripe shirt. it was the same one from the day you met him. his figure loomed over yours as he stole the water bottle from your hands. “please don’t drink all of it,” you huffed, and he closed the bottle. there was barely any left. “i didn’t drink all of it,” he smiled. “if you were going to save me this much you might as well have just finished it.”
his hand traced a stray hair from your face, “that wouldn’t be nice to do to my favorite person, would it?” feeling your face get warm, you retracted and faced the other direction. “do you have any homework to do?” you finally asked, to which he hummed. “for mr. lee, yeah.” “do you want to work on it together?” you proposed, causing him to nod, “i’ll text my mom.”
the rest of the walk home was quiet. the two of you always walked home together. you would be lying if you weren’t in dismal the day he didn’t show up to walk with you home. that day, he spent it with his believed to be soulmate and had texted you apologizing you had to walk home alone. after that, you didn’t wait for him in the schoolyard and just went about your way.
when you entered your house, you greeted your family along with jaemin, who thanked them for allowing him to stay for a while. as the two of you were working on homework, jaemin liked to take is pencil and doodle little things on your paper. you would keep erasing his smiley faces and his tiny self portrait on the corner of your paper. it was like that until he decided to write actual words. (the words in quotes are jaemin)

you paused and stared at the writing on your paper. jaemin seemed to notice your hesitation and put his pencil down. “is something wrong?” he asked, making direct eye contact with you. “jaemin how did you do it?” you responded, only to have him scrunch his eyebrows together. “jaemin how did you get over not having a soulmate?” he pursed his lips into a straight line. “it’s easier when there’s someone else you thought about,” jaemin says, smiling to himself.

“did you.. not have a soulmate?”
you shook your head and laughed to yourself. “i guess you could say that,” you responded. “my timer ran out for someone who had another soulmate,” you continued, laying down on your back to face the ceiling. “it’s funny, isn’t it?” you met eyes with jaemin who’s smile had dropped. “i’m sorry,” he whispered. “who was it?” you finally asked. he swallowed and turned his face away from you. “who else would it be?” you sat up and looked at the boy in front of you.
“you—you’re telling me that it was—” “you. it was you.”
you could feel your heart race as he spoke your name. “would it be too late to tell you my timer,” you paused and looked at him, “my timer ran out when i met you.” jaemin’s smile showed wider than ever before. his hand found its way towards yours. homework pages still sat on the floor and your pencils littered on the other end of the unfinished questions. as if by instinct, your fingers interlaced with one another.
it was an odd phenomenon.
if fate messed up on your soulmate timers, why was it that the two of you still found yourselves together?
“na jaemin,” you echoed. he looked towards you, awaiting for you to speak. “even if we aren’t—technically soulmates—i still think you’re mine.”
