We need to better educate kids on the importance of animals that are typically hated because otherwise you end up with adults who think hating wasps is a personality.

Trufax: hatred of wasps is so widespread that it’s prevalent among biologists as well. An entire field full of people getting excited about species that nobody else has heard of, and many have collectively decided that wasps don’t need to be researched, even though they’re threatened by the same things that are threatening bees, and disappearance of wasps will spell bad things for the number of pests found in gardens and farms.

I have a friend wasp named Queeny. She built her nest on a really inconvenient area where I often dump my birds’ uneaten seed or shake towels out. She would come out angrily and buzz at us, ready to defend her home from the strange giants.

Queeny didn’t know that it was our porch she built her home on, she saw a nice ledge and decided that it was a suitable spot to begin her life as a lone female.

So instead of removing the nest and poisoning her with bug spray, you know what I did? I moved the area where I dump my things and started feeding her. I would tap three times on the railing before leaving a treat like fruit, honey, dog food, or pesky beetles I find in my garden, then move away to give them lots of space. At first she would buzz out, wings spread and ready to fight, but after doing this for just a few days…she stopped!

Now when she comes out, it’s slowly and non-threatingly. She tilts her head at me before gingerly inspecting the offerings. She doesn’t threaten my mom any more either, she’s learned that we mean no harm. We’ve started using that ledge to shake sheets out and dump bird seed and she doesn’t mind at all! She just watches quietly.

She even has a family now! Five daughters and one lad- a husband or son, not sure which lmao -who greet us the same, she must’ve taught them that we’re not enemies (or they just grew up used to us). They even protect my garden, since Queeny’s family has grown the invasive Japanese beetle population has plummeted! They really are delightful neighbors.

FMA has a lot of subtle symbolism but the least subtle is probably the “Ed has a lot of issues with his father” symbolism. The FMA manga starts on the Leore arc and ends on the Promises Day arc so what I mean is Ed started and ended the series by pummeling the shit out of someone named “Father”

Ishval backstory arc - Riza’s dad is bad dad. Ed’s not available for punching.

Something that really breaks my heart is the cruel indifference that some people have towards pets or animals that they personally don’t enjoy. Like I hear so many stories about someone losing a beloved pet snake or rat or tarantula, only for their friends to say something like “good riddance”.

My best friend does not like my gerbils at all. She jokingly calls them vermin and teases me for being the only 25 year old woman that still has pet gerbils. She came to visit me one weekend when one of my sweet babies was really sick, and unfortunately called me at work to solemnly let me know my gerbil had passed. The entire drive home I was trying not to cry because we had plans and I didn’t want to ruin the weekend with my ridiculous grief over a rodent. When I got home, my best friend was sitting in the driveway, hand painting a little coffin with my gerbil’s name on it. I immediately started sobbing. She went and got me a glass of wine, and played a Stevie Nicks song on her phone while she dug a grave. After the somber funeral in my backyard, she cancelled our evening plans and we walked to a bar, where my best friend completely un-ironically held up a glass and toasted my dead gerbil, thanking her for the joy she’d brought me.

The point of this story is, you don’t have to share or even understand your friend’s interests to show them respect and empathy in a time of loss. It’s alright if you don’t like a friend’s unconventional pet, you certainly don’t have to! However, pet loss can be incredibly painful, and I think it is always best to err on the side of kindness.

and you know what’s the fun part? a lot of Japanese and Korean studios outsource work to the Philippines, so a lot of the anime and cartoon shows we all love may have passed through the hands of Filipino animators at some point. i personally know some folks who’ve done work on One Piece, Star Vs The Forces of Evil, and Steven Universe, among many many other shows…. and how doing the thing they love for very little to no pay is destroying these artists.

In case anyone reading my blog is unaware, this is a reference to the Green Day song titled “Wake Me Up When September Ends” a song that Billie Joe Armstrong wrote following the death of his father in September of 1982 when Billie Joe was ten years old. The title of the song references his desire to sleep through September in an effort to get some emotional distance from the death of his father.

He’s since been open about the emotional difficulty of having written the song since many people now message him on October 1st to ‘wake him up’ despite the song being a memorial to his departed father.

It’s generally seen as respectful to not try to wake him up. Let him sleep and let him remember his father in peace.
