A crush.
Admittedly, it had been a while since Pim felt one. He'd dream about it, how it would feel to fall in love and be fallen for. Especially in a world where he wasn't really appreciated as much.
It only remained a dream until… Her.
Mr. Boss' niece, (Name).
Pim remembered the warm fuzzy feeling he felt in his chest the first time they met, the way she so eagerly greeted him and shook his hand. He didn't fathom it then that it could've been anything more than first-impression nervousness, and instead believed that he just thought the new girl at the reception desk was pretty and that was it.
But when he found himself more eager to get to work to greet her, and looking forward to the off-chances he'd catch her in the halls and have a small chat… Pim started to doubt that what he felt was just— normal, co-worker feelings.
Even Charlie took notice of his feelings for her.
"Dude, if you like her so much, why don't you just say that?" He asked one day, the both of them sat in the break room. "WHAT? No! Of course not, Charlie! She doesn't need to hear any of that!" Pim answered quickly, hands slammed against the table surface. "I mean, suit yourself, dude, but don't regret it if she ends up going out with someone else."
Now that thought stung.
Pim visibly drooped back down onto his seat, which ended up making his best friend feel pretty bad.
"Hey, man, I don't- I didn't mean—" Charlie winced, awkwardly reaching out towards the pink critter. "Look, if you want, I can ask her some stuff, help you out a little— how does that sound?" He offered. Pim brightened up in interest, sniffling. "Really, Charlie? You'd… You'd do that for me??"
"Yeah, of course, man." Charlie shrugged, relieved that he got Pim hopeful again. "Oh, thank you, Charlie! I'll owe you one if you really do it." Pim was back to high spirits, causing Charlie to smile. "Don't worry 'bout it, man. I've got you."
"Hey, (Name)?"
"Oh, good morning, Charlie! How can I help?"
(Name) shifted her focus over at the yellow visitor in front of the reception. "Yeah, hey, so… Are you single?"
It was quiet for a moment, the question registering in her mind for a while longer. "… Oh…!" (Name)'s smile strained, looking away awkwardly. "Uh— no, I mean- I wasn't asking for me, I was asking for, uh—" Charlie quickly blurted out, realising how it sounded. "I was asking for a friend."
"Oh! No. Yeah. It's fine. You're cool," came her still-awkward response. "Who is this friend exactly…?"
"I, uh, can't tell you… It'd be awkward." Charlie rubbed the back of his head, trying to think of ways to salvage this quickly-forming disaster. "Oh. Yeah. Yeah, I… Guess…?" (Name) attempted laughing, desperately trying to fix it as well.
"… Look, can you just answer the question? I swear it's nothing creepy." Charlie sighed. "Um… Yeah. I am… But… I do have a thing at six, so…"
"The question isn't for me, (Name). I already told you this." He was getting a bit annoyed by this point, unsure of if it came from the fact she was still doubting his intentions or the fact his ego took a little hit at her attempt to "gently" reject him. "Oh, right. Yeah. Sorry! Sorry, Charlie." (Name) held her hands up placatingly, though it did very little to soothe his annoyance.
"Well- well now, I'm in a bad mood. See? I was just trying to ask you a question and you got all weird about it, now I'm in a bad mood." Charlie crossed his arms, looking thoroughly miffed. "Oh, god. I'm really sorry, Charlie— Alright, hey, I'm about to go on break, I'll take you out as a treat. How does that sound?" (Name) started fixing up, getting up from the seat. "Yeah, sure."
Charlie's eyes drifted towards the nearby door, where Pim was. "Oh." He winced, realising he got a tad bit distracted from his original directive. "… Sorry, dude."
Pim looked absolutely gobsmacked.
"What for?" (Name) had exited the reception desk, now in front of him. "Oh, no. Sorry, I was… No, that was nothing, don't worry about it." Charlie rambled, a bit startled that she was right there.
"… Well, on the bright side, you know she's single now."
Pim had his head on the table, looking utterly depressed. Charlie remained by his side, patting his back with a bag of donuts nearby. "You made it look so easy, Charlie! I'd ask her out on a date like that if I could." Pim straightened up, gesturing around. "But I can't." He drooped again, head hitting the table. "Ah, c'mon, man. Don't- don't say that. You just need to be more confident."
"How can I do that when just talking to her makes me feel so weak? I can hardly breathe when she's looking at me!"
Pim stressed. "My— hands get all sweaty and… I feel my stomach get all weird. It all feels so childish, Charlie."
"Hey, man, what can you do? Honestly, maybe you should stop beating yourself up over it and just—you know, try talking to her." Charlie rubbed at Pim's back, using his other hand to gesture for empasis. "Like, actually talking to her. Ask her for her number, ask when she's free- just- just something to show her you're interested."
"Sure… Sure, I could try that." Pim mumbled slowly, nodding. Charlie gave him one last pat before reaching for his donuts, "Remember to breathe, though. Don't pass out."
Startled, they realised Mr. Boss had been there the whole time. He was dressed in a whole ghillie suit, all the way from head to toe.
"Were… Were you just standing there this whole time?" Pim was impressed, though he found himself really hoping that he wasn't. "Yeah. Yeah, I was." Unfortunately for him, Mr. Boss responded. "Wow, that's pretty sick, man. I had no idea you were even there." Charlie complimented, also impressed. "Oh, thanks!" Mr. Boss grinned proudly. "Made it myself."
"Did you, um, overhear our conversation?" Pim nervously fiddled. "All of it. I- uh, heard all of it." His boss nodded, a twinge of awkwardness in his voice. "I am so sorry, mr. Boss, we— neither of us meant to talk about her like that." Mortified, he started to apologise profusely. "Woah, woah, hey! Hey, Pim, don't worry about it." Mr. Boss tried to reassure him, but the hunting gun in hand was really intimidating. "In fact, I've been wondering about it for a while now! You're not good at being subtle, you know."
"Oh." That seemed like news to Pim, his pink face going a bright red. "… I'm not?"
"Oh, yeah, no, dude, you're totally obvious. Like, I knew it way before you even told me." Charlie nodded, dropping even more on him. "Seriously?" Pim squinted, embarrassed and in disbelief. "Trust me, anyone can tell." The boss chimed in once more. "Wow. I, um. I thought I was better at hiding it than that." Pim frowned, his hand instinctually going to rub his head in self-comfort.
"Anyway, if you really want to impress my niece, she has a thing for flowers."
To his surprise, the boss seemed to be on his side. "She does?" Pim blinked. "Yeah. She's crazy about them. She's also super into mushrooms, it was why she spent some time in rehab before she worked here."
"Wait- (Name) was in rehab??" Charlie repeated.
"Used to be! Boy, if you boys knew her before she did, you would not have liked her. She was a… She was a bitch, that woman." Mr. Boss tried to laugh, but there was an edge of resurfacing irritation. "Anyway, she's a real sweetheart now! Crazy how rehab does that to you."
"So, what you're saying is… I buy her some flowers?" Pim asked, wanting to get back on topic. "Yep! She doesn't usually get any so it'd make her really happy." Mr. Boss nodded, happy to help his employee. "Alright, sure. I can get her flowers." Pim couldn't help but smile, that just seemed so in character of her. "I'll leave you boys to it!" Mr. Boss started to leave, but paused by the doorway.
"Oh, right! And Pim?" He turned around.
"Yeah, Mr. Boss?" Came Pim's response.
"You don't hurt her now, ya hear? Otherwise there'll be H E L L to pay." He gripped his gun tightly in warning, glaring at him. Then as soon as he was done, he went back to smiling again. "Good luck!"
Pim and Charlie stared at the empty doorway where the boss left through, before slowly looking at each other in silence.
"Alright, Pim, you can do this…! Just… Hand her the flowers, ask her if she's free tonight… Nothing too bad."
He spoke to himself, clearing his throat. "I've got this…" He muttered before entering the reception room.
"No, sir, unfortunately, we do not do food services here." (Name) was on the phone when he came in, talking to a client. "No, we don't do delivery. But, er— would it make you smile if we did?"
Awkward timing.
Pim stayed by, patiently waiting for her to end the call before talking. "Alright. Okay, sir, thank you. Goodbye."
"Um. Hello, (Name)!"
"Oh, hello, Pim!"
She waved at him, enthusiastic. Good, right? That was a good sign?
"So. Um. I… Got you these." He placed the bouquet down on the counter, watching as she gasped. "Oh, Pim! These are lovely, thank you!" The smile on her face was wide, her hands readily taking the gift in acceptance.
He loved the way she looked at it, how happy it made her.
He should buy her those more often, he thought to himself…
"Right, um, anyway— actually, with those… I've been meaning to ask…" Pim cleared his throat again, nervous to high hell. "Yes?" (Name) placed the flowers away, waiting for him to speak. "Are you… Free tonight? Maybe? After work?" Pim almost rushed it out, trying to gesture with his hand. "We could— have dinner? Or… Just… Um… Walk?"
"Oh!…" (Name)'s eyebrows raised, not expecting the question.
Oh, god. Was that a good 'oh!' or a bad 'oh!'??
"Yeah, actually. I am." Finally, she answered him with a smile. "We could have dinner… And walk." (Name) shrugged, bashful.
"S-So, I'll… Wait after work, then? We can leave together?" Pim, now a bit boldened by her acceptance, asked once again.
"Sure. We can leave together." (Name) nodded again.
Pim could just feel his whole chest flutter, as if he was walking on air. He hadn't expected it to go so well— oh, god, wait, was his face going hot again??
"Right! I'll… I'll see you then!" Pim smiled back at her, shuffling back towards the door leading further into the office building. "Sure! I'll see you tonight, Pim." (Name) waved, receiving yet another call.
Pim made a dash for the door, closing it behind him.
He felt so giddy he could just scream!
He did it, he actually did it!
Now, all he had to do was prepare for the evening!
Shouldn't be that hard…
