As Aromantic Visibility Day (June 5th) approaches this year, friendly reminder from an aroace: it's Aromantic Visibility Day, not "Aroace" Visibility Day! Not all aromantics are also asexual — there are aromantics who are allosexual (aroallos for short), aromantics who don't separately label their sexual orientation at all, and aromantics whose sexual orientation doesn't fit into an ace/allo binary, as well as likely even more aros who don't fit into "aroace" for even more reasons — and all of them are equally included in Aromantic Visibility Day, because they are equally aromantic! In fact, those aros who aren't ace are disproportionately erased and in need of visibility, even more than aroaces are (which is really saying something, because aroace visibility itself is already terrible), so including them in Aromantic Visibility Day is vital, and using the correct name for the occasion instead of calling it an "aroace day" is a start.

Overall: again, speaking as an aroace myself, we aroaces will not be offended if you just call Aromantic Visibility Day the thing it is actually called! I care about sharing this upcoming day with my fellow aros, so stop excluding them, even accidentally! We aroaces celebrate this day but it is not for us exclusively!

maybe i'm just overthinking but how do gender signals work between monsters? do they even have gender signals, like signs that delineate who's presenting fem or masc or androgynous? sth sth is the concept of gender even present in a society so decoupled from human? gender is socially constructed through generations and such, and i'm thinking how the hell would human system of gender would even apply to monsters. like, monsters are much more diverse in forms and presentations compared to humans, right? sth sth categorization, like, you don't normally assign gender to rocks, because they don't show sexual dimorphism that we as humans are wired to look for in people. do monsters just identify/categorize one another differently than humans do? what is on their identification card? what does this all mean?

okay might be a weird thought that i will refine soon but i think all children in undertale are assigned nonbinary at birth. it's similar to how some old cultures view children (but with some differences i will elaborate later).

basically, some cultures believed that children are sexless, genderless beings, so they're all the same categorization as "child" until they reach puberty, which marked their adulthood. essentially, a child transitions into either man or woman upon receiving their first symbolic mark of adulthood through sex-based bodily change. that's why some victorian photos/images have children looking so androgynous. boys and girls both had long hair and dresses, because categorically they were all children (but also it was cheaper to pass down clothes).

imo, monsters work their system similar to that, in general, with some caveats for subspecies of monsters maybe? all children are marked genderless. or more like 'child' is their gender, marked by their striped clothing. once they lose their stripes, they transition from child into something else. but yeah that's all i have for now.

hiiiii yes yes i was thinking that too!! i was thinking that they are traditionally genderless because they didn't and don't organize their society around sexual dimorphism and gender roles, if that makes sense? they might have gendered pronouns but they don't rely on the female-male scale but something else entirely (i'm still working on it). human gendered pronouns (he/she) are essentially neopronouns for them in a sense, and with that comes feminine/masculine/androgynous presentation, but that's also a very small subset.

consider how a large portion of monsters aren't anthropomorphic, i doubt human gender expression even has that much of an appeal. more realistically, they would have dysphoria and envy from other forms of monsters, like mettaton wanting a robot body. gender often has lots of baggage around desirability, so there's that factor around how people present and identify and want to be. it's complicated in that sense, i feel.

and, since the idea of sex and gender was born from perceived biological differences (and social function, but let's focus for now), i think that puts a wrench in the whole male-female binary dynamic. in my opinion, all monsters categorize themselves by a standard SOUL. so, a monster to them is a being with a white, upside-down heart-shaped SOUL. anyone with something different is marked as abnormal, like humans (their own category), killers (whatever they are), etc. i think it would be interesting if they traditionally believe that the SOUL is the real part of themselves; everything else is smoke and mirror. funnily enough, maybe traditionally they view genders as human and monster. but it's not "gender" as they call it, but something else entirely.

continued with the SOUL, perhaps biological markers are stored in there, something similar to how their magical body and traits manifest through precursors' magic. so, they have an assigned form/body that socially decides what role/environment is best for them. and, yeah, that's how transgender-adjacent stuff can still happen--

oooo yes yes!! the idea that their magic attacks are a form of self-expression could be so cool! maybe there could be some desire/envy surrounding what types of magic are the most desirable and why -- could be for aesthetic or functional reason, or something else entirely. this could also suggest that magic isn't inherent or stuck but can evolve and be learned/passed down in a sense, like how concepts of human gender evolves over time through social change and discourse.

speaking of, i do think monsters not having a clear/unanimous idea on what this all means. maybe they have discourse over what is their "self" actually: is it their SOUL or their magic or their body? different ideas from different types from different times. boss monsters live ridiculously long and so does gerson. i think it's unclear how long other types live but yeah...

and yeah yeah!! auras could be a way to gauge people at first glance i think. i do headcanon that SOULs give off some weird energy field like radiation/EMPs of sorts, so similar to transformers once more 😔💔 people can read your SOULs, but very briefly, like a type of communication. killer's freaky SOUL on the other hand....
