Chicuace Topilli, the Six of Staffs, depicts a Cuachic warrior “the shorn one,” carried on a palanquin by young men who represent different elements of society. The Cuachic were among the most honoured of warriors, who had captured over six captives and who had carried out numerous heroic deeds. He has the shaved head and mohawk of a Cuachic warrior, the red and blue painted face, and the yellow tlahuitzli, or body suit, with a starry night-sky banner on his back. His Topilli, or staff, is the only one adorned with a shield, adorned with a xicalcoliuhqui pattern, which symbolizes the duality and completeness. He has achieved the highest level of warrior through valour and discipline, and is celebrated by his companions, who lift him up and march triumphantly. The first of the young men represents the nobility, for the man at the left wears the quetzallalpiloni quetzal feather hair adornment of the noble class, and is adorned with rich jewellery of jade and coral. Beside him is a priest-warrior, who represents the priestly class. He wears the Cicitlallo Cuextecatl, the body suit adorned with white circles which represent stars, and which reveal him as a man who has captured four warriors. Beside him are two commoners, who are artisans or successful farmers, and at the back is a young Cuextecatl warrior, whose regalia is that worn by warriors who have captured two men in battle. All of these men, who represent the different levels of society, celebrate the success of the Cuachic warrior. The Chicuace Topilli card celebrates the achievement of an important milestone, the successful completion of a goal. The Cuachic warrior is not afraid to be seen and to celebrate his accomplishment, and his confidence is rewarded by his colleagues.
