FUCK
WHY
2026 is going to be THAT year of the 2020s I'm calling it
I have not touched stranger things in years but oh my god. The online reception is insane. Season 5 was definitely a fuck you to Netflix. The duffer brothers are not that stupid. Writing does not get progressively worse, it seems like they were told to change their writing style to coincide with the brainrot style that’s consuming the streaming platform. Also to briefly put on a tinfoil hat: a show about an mk ultra project is obviously going to be censored in this current political climate.
The Right Side Up (So Long, Stranger Things)
ok, so. that was the final season and series finale. 10 years and 5 seasons and countless waffles and lots of great music.
I thought it was good. It had a lot of amazing elements, nostalgia and bittersweetness and some well written conclusions, but half the time it also felt off. Not outright bad or wrong, just off, the finale didn't hit dead center for me.
It felt like a really long, well written epic fanfic. I'm not sure how else to explain it - there was a lot of exposition and a lot of fanservice character interactions that the narrative probably didn't need and it made the story feel bloated, but the kind of bloated you get after eating Thanksgiving dinner. It's a wanted bloat, you just want more. Which is what fanfic is good for, but not necessarily professional tv storytelling. Best example is probably Will's big coming out scene - very emotionally satisfying but unrealistic for the time and setting and context, especially as it was set up in the first season. One could argue that Will needed to unburden himself to better mentally fight, but did he really need to do so at that time to anyone other than his mom and Mike? Is he really angst-ing over whether Murray will accept him or not? (Buffy did both things better - the reactions of friends when coming out, and having epiphanies/revelations at bad times.) This the point in the fanfic where you go, oh ok, this key 1980s scene was definitely written in the 2020s by a young person. Cue all the arguments about media literacy and personal catharsis for the author.
Also the final boss of the Abyss Spider was underwhelming and disappointing; all these years of trauma drama for Space Shelob and a bunch of teenagers kill it in less than 10 minutes? That's an entire thesis unto itself in unpacking, because the Duffers did set that up all the way back in S2 and re-enforced it every season since, but the payoff fizzled.
It was still a thousand times better than the GoT finale, and a hundred times better than the HIMYM finale.
Few things off the top of my head that were definitely 10/10:
Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna/Henry/001 - a story is only as good as it's villain and this one had a few, but the main baddy was, is, and will always be Vecna. And he fucking nailed it. Master performance. The writing managed to be on par for the acting which surprised me, and I loved that we saw Henry's humanity and Vecna's rejection of his humanity. He couldn't deal with being a victim; he chose evil and made himself believe he was in a symbiotic relationship. Not everyone can or should be redeemed.
Robin Buckley - her character arc was really well written and well acted. Even after S4 I felt like I didn't really have a grip on her character and I struggled writing her voice in my one ST fanfic, but I think I know her now. Maybe because she finally found her own voice. :) Maya Hawke, who's not just an actress but a voice actress, was perfect as a radio DJ. It was a narrative set up to give that voiceover at the end to help wrap things up, and it worked. (Plus, Vickie was used sparingly but to great effect.)
The Squawk - great narrative circle to all the radios and cassette tapes of music used throughout the series. I loved how it was secretly a way to send messages to the party, the setting for that entertaining testosterone fueled climb, it became a base of operations, and was where Robin was meant to end up.
Will Got Powers - let's fucking go! I don't care if they were only Vecna-adjacent, I love a come-full-circle victim hitting back, if Mike can imagine a hopeful ending for El then I can imagine Will still has a spark of some power after S5. I choose to believe in movie Matilda ending over book Matilda ending, sorry not sorry.
Exotic Matter Building Top Phenomena - after a decade of creepy tentacle flesh biohazard stuff in 99% of the Upside Down, this was something different and creative and just as disturbing. The corpses were scary AF.
Nancy & Jonathan Adulting - you had Eddie egging on Steve and Murray egging on Jonathan, but in they end there was a reason they worked so well together. And that thoughtful maturity was what let them work things out to part on good terms (and leave room for getting back together way in the future, maybe.) The stupid love triangle is dead, long may it not reign.
Karen Wheeler is a BAMF as expected - she finally is let in on the secret and we see where all of her children get it from. How much more could've been accomplished if she'd been in on everything from the start?
Dare I explore tumblr and read other finale musings... I already know the internet is divided, it's either Pure Cinema or Pure Garbage and the Byler fans are crashing out. Whatever, I was happy enough to see Mr. Clarke again. The real Lord of the entire series!
I can't escape Stranger Things (and I don't want to?!)
ok on the one hand
stranger things spoilers just DOMINATING every nook and cranny of the internet even when I mute and unsubscribe and don't go looking!! It's been TWO DAYS and I haven't had time to re-binge S1 at the least before watching the new episodes
but also
fuck YES the ONE THING I wanted is happening LET'S FUCKING GO
the 'ships of Wednesday are a TRIP
stupid 2-boy love triangle from every over dramatic vampire and CW show ever? GONE. good riddance.
the unofficial fanon ship? sweet n sour, light and dark, sparkles and blood. I'm not your pal, gal. they challenge each other, they complement each other, they won't put up with each other's bullshit (mostly looking at YOU there W. Addams) but they will see the best in each other.
(artist: @annadrawscg)
the official canon 'ship'? all a farce - or was it?! a murderer in the form of a backstreet boy and Wednesday are still attracted to each other but hate to admit it, and little miss was 250% ready to become the hyde's DARK MASTER, this is enemies to lovers on cocaine adderall (must remember this is a teen show)

If anyone tries to give me shit for shipping Nephrite/Naru, let me remind you all that Nephrite is canonically 19 years old and was originally going to be paired off with Makoto in the manga.
i think the saddest part of sailor moon, other than them dying over and over, is usagi and naru's friendship fizzling out by the end of the series
At the very least Stars confirms that Usagi and Naru still hang out occasionally!
But yeah, it is sad that they grew apart. I also think it's very realistic. In many ways Sailor Moon is Usagi's coming of age story, and I think everyone above a certain age can relate to what happened to Usagi and Naru.
A lot of friendships do just do fizzle out. There's no big blowout, you still care about and think fondly of each other, but you've just drifted apart. Especially when you're a teenager, you go through so many changes. You make new friends, develop your own beliefs, maybe even move far away for college. Unless you're really really committed to maintaining a friendship, it's very easy for you to slowly drift apart and suddenly you haven't spoken to your childhood best friend in years.
I think Naru and Usagi will always cherish each other and as adults they probably talk and hang out every now and then (I can absolutely see Neo-Queen Serenity sneaking out for some normal girl time with Naru), but yeah, they're just not best friends anymore. And it's sad because we can all relate to it, but that's life.
Been a fav since it dropped twenty years ago. Jesus, two decades. She was still too young. Listening to it a lot lately.
I think the photo is a little old, but I wanted to use one of her smiling.
jesus h what the fuck. she was the youngest. I'm just gonna say it, even as a Xander fan, how tf did she die before Nicholas Brendon? I mean I know people die before their time, life isn't fair, but wow.
Rest in Peace, Michelle.

Chapter 13: Through a Looking-glass, Darkly
Naru and Nephrite - plus a few Sailor Senshi - are all busy with their own lives and wants and fears, as the canon narrative of Sailor Moon starts to spin out a different story.
Then a green shooting star falls to Earth... and a certain California girl is brought to Tokyo, Japan.

I tried to eat while watching this trailer and almost choked. Does anyone know if there’s a way to see this movie now?
I couldn't find it anywhere online. Managed to find one single DVD via Amazon, apparently the library of Vancouver didn't want it anymore. ^_^
I think it was a little ahead of its time (and I know its based on an earlier play), very dark comedy is everywhere now like The Boys.
a year and a day
since I last updated my fic. not abandoned! but I am a slow writer, and life happens. in the meantime, I don't think I ever shared this amazing fanart on tumblr:
A commish by Supreme Moon Senshi on insta! If you've seen gorgeous aqua colored fanart of Sailor Earth that looks like it could be official 90s art, than you've seen his work. :)
Day 10 - Character I wish was a Sailor…
Naru-chan, definitely. If only because she loses her friendship with Usagi simply because she isn’t a Sailor. If there’s one thing I don’t like about Sailor Moon it’s the idea that only the Sailors’ friendships with each other are important, and all previous relationships mean nothing due to destiny and duty. The series has promoted the idea of love and friendship to many of us, yet it completely disregards the one friend that was dear to Usagi from the beginning.
Poor Naru just gets shafted on the friendship front, and Usagi never seems to feel bad. At least in PGSM the idea is explored with the Naru vs Ami subplot, though it inevitably ends with Naru accepting that Usagi has a new life she cannot be fully part of.
And to top it off, she’s always attacked by monsters. Give that girl some powers so she can at least defend herself!
YES, THIS!
the singular driving theme of my fanfic, of which I am compelled to write 30+ years after Naru/Molly appeared on my TV screen ;_;
Oh also I need everyone to be aware that the goblins weren’t cgi. They were short people in costume. The Goblin King also wasn’t cgi, it was a puppet manned by five people. Ncuti and Millie did not pre-record and then lip sync their parts of the Goblin Song, they had to sing to cardboard cutouts of the goblins as soon as the cameras started rolling. One of the goblins was played by the lady who plays Po in the Teletubbies. No Davina McCalls were hurt in the process of making this episode.
I stg, I got as far as "Ncuti and Millie did not pre-record and then lip sync their parts of the Goblin Song, they had to sing to cardboard cutouts of the goblins as soon as the cameras started rolling"
and I actually thought, "what joyful and classic tumblr shit talking this be! razzing David Bowie and his 4th best role which is also his 2nd most influential role! I am still Youthful and understand the References of today"
