PART ONE

FUTHARK INSPIRED GERMANIC SCRIPT

This is a mostly featural script, and my very first ever!!!

It was for a very poor attempt at a Germanicesque conlang.

TEXT:

"Adding a line that goes through a consonant [horizontally] introduces voicing.

Adding a triangle [as in carved þ] makes it a fricative

Version 1) This one was pretty bad...

Base letters: [all symbols and their values]

Notes: This sucks; there are too many unique letters, the featural system doesn't show [up] much. Post alveolar fricatives are formed by adding fricative sign to alveolar fricatives. Also the system doesn't look very good [not consistent enough]

Ive wanted to make an artlang with a noun case system where the two cases give a word some vauge but evocative connotations. The inspiration stems from how one can say "a cottage in the forest" or "a cabin in the woods" and get different imagery, as the classoc (to me) example. I wanna make an artlang where you would use the same words but different cases to get that same vibe outta words. Btw i know cabin/cottage and forest/woods have actual differences between them and are not a pair of synonyms, I am reffering to the connotations these similar phrases have.

Anyways my current idea is having a hot-cold gender, along with a nueter gender that also acts as the dictionary definition, where hot denotes... high temperatures... warm colors (closer to magenta)... and some more abstract stuff like being together, communal, or paired up, along with things like being extroverted and lively. Inversely cold is low temperatures, cool colors (closer to cyan), being solitary, indivualistic/unique, being introverted and death.

Something being hot or cold is not a negative or positive thing. Except for maybe like. Death. Its suppose to be a shared bank of themes the user can draw from to get abstract about the qualities of something or how they feel about it. Like id imagine a person describing a home as hot cuz its where people live, but refer to their childhood home as cold cuz they have a rough relationshil with their parents, or dont like their childhood room, or it was a rural home in an isolated location.

I like the vauge uses these cases could have but i haaate cold and hot. They feel so dumb. I wouldnt mind dropping that theme for something MUCH more abstract. I debated doing solar and lunar but, it felt like i was assigning traits to the sun and moon rather than using a descriptive set of words.

Dgmw im assigning traits to something being hot and something being cold that dont need to be there (like cold = indivualism snd hot = communalism isnt horrible, but its still like, the act of being cold? Yeah that reminds me of Being A Singular Thing) but its at least not as loaded as The Sun is a Thing of Life cuz the moon also has that trait, just not for humans, and going "the moon (solar case)" to talk about how the moon being the moon is good for the tides irks me on a deeper level then saying like, "arctic water (hot) is teeming with life und the surface".

Also the moons not alone it follows the earth, and making a solar be the one about being alone is dumb to me too cuz places that are hot have more people like a campsite or the equator.

Anyways, if you have a suggestion thats more abstract then hot and cold that can still have some flexibility (assigning traits not directly related to that theme back to it in a way that doesnt feel like "someone has to have it") please tell me okay bye.

My best suggestion is to stop looking for something to compare the nouns against. Instead of thinking of "hot and cold" or "life and death" or whatever, just make the two groups. If u think "star', "fire", "home" "community", "life", "energy", and whatever fit one of the groups you want to have, then just put them in it.

In other words, don't try to give names to summarize the vibes of the groups, if you can already tell what the vibes you want are just make the groups and mark em as "group one" and "group two"

If you NEED to make two groups with a clear, simple, one word theme, I would suggest maybe entropy and chaos; it seems like the vibes youre going for.

Also, if the neuter isn't going to be used in convos, don't make one for a dictionary. Language as it's used first, then dictionaries to describe them. I'd just make all entries to the dictionaries in one class, OR give inherent gender to nouns.

Good point! My idea was to have something concrete to refer back to that would guide physical traits associated with the two, but if theyre casting a wide net anyways it doesnt really matter.

For the description of nueter I messed up by saying dictionary definition since thats a phrase already used for things like the -er ending in spanish. Im failing to think of a language that does do this, but basically nueter is the speaker saying nothing about the subject, either cuz they dont feel like it, have nothing to say, or need to not be specific.

I dont want any word to belong to either group 1 or 2 by default, since it means you can only specify you personally think of something the lang thinks of as group 1 as group 2, and cant highlight its group 1 aspects, unless i add like, another marker going Focus On The Grammatical Gender Of This Thing.

Itd be better to call this an englang at this point, since artlang kinda implies its suppose to mimic how languages actually work, n this is definitly a "i can and i will" situation rather than "i can but should i".

Just a couple thoughts you can throw out: I think a neutral gender could also add some cool connotations, like abstracting the noun, as you see in something like Tamazight, or maybe referring to a concept, like you see in the English nouns without definiteness marking. (e.g. "I like cats")

Or, of course, you can try to make it truly neutral, without any additional meaning, but in natlangs that kinda system can be extremely unstable.

How do you want this system to manifest?

Uts very early right now so im not sure how everything will come together, but im planning on having it be something that supplments my nornal notes for world building and other art stuff, like characters internal monolouges or out of story dialouge, sk the two groups are suppose to get me to contemplate how chafacters think or how i wanna dezcribe somethjng that will later or visual and what effect i want it to have on people.

Cuz kof that its not going to have "can realisitcally develop or be spoken by anyone" as a goal, and it might be like. Baby ithkuil but perhaps if it wasnt so packed. I do like agglutanation and fusional stuff, so perhaps i can add the abstractness in somewhere else, or ill brrak down the groups again and thr nueter could work for what youve suggested.

This is actually a cool thing I know about!

In the wild capybaras live in large groups so naturally a female capybara will take care of not only her own offspring, but all of the other offspring in the group. So capybaras are super great mothers who will adopt pretty much anything and take care of it.

Lots of places that rescue different animals will give a group of baby animals to a capybara to raise if they have one.

Like puppies

They are just super calm animals so they’re naturally great at mothering or just existing in a group!

I think, maybe, perhaps, people are prescribing autism on others for basic, neurotypical behavior a little too much.

And I don't mean behavior that only neurotypical people have, I mean like simple basic human experiences: stuff everyone expirences.

As a (most likely) neurotypical linguist with very neurodivergent friends and family, I experience this a lot.

It feels like the world cannot accept a linguist who isn't hyperfocused. They just can't imagine people being a typical, basic human who happens to study language scientifically. I talk to people about my studies and linguistics-related hobbies, and they often respond with something along the lines of "oh I can tell you have some tism" and it's honestly like

Because, like, people have lives yk? What else is autistic to these people? Reading? (yep) Art? (yep) Music? (yep) Going outside? (yep)

Sometimes when I'm talking to peers it feels like neurotypical people can only have 0 interests, 0 hobbies, 0 life, 0 minutes outside per day, 0 senses of humor, 0 love for fashion, 0 appreciation of aesthetics, 0 personality, 0 chalants, 0 passions, and 0 drive of curiosity, love, or care.

To these people, everyone who's anyone has to be autistic, because they're autistic, and they want interesting people to be part of their in-group.

And I'm not even that interesting.
