“Sometimes 24-hours can change the way you look at things all together”
It was finally there. I had been waiting for this 24 hour vacation for over 3 months now. And it came.
Now, I did my research on what happens during Silvester at Berlin and so on. Watched videos and even spoke to a lot of people about it. Why was this so important to me? Because when entire Chemnitz was at Berlin the year before, I was in my room with 2 of my friends and watched the fireworks from my room window.
Over a million people gather around Brandenburg Gate every year for the massive celebrations and welcome the new years with all zealousness. And this year, I got a chance to go to Berlin with all the people who are equally crazy as I am. It’s awesome!
There are particularly 12 things I learned during these 24 hours. Let’s begin!
Wake up early and travel like an idiot! – No, we didn’t want to go a day early, relax, or look around. Why? Because we are students and we find paying for luxurious (just a bed to sleep on in a youth hostel) a really crappy idea :D
Let’s begin the day!
Walk all the way from Berlin omni bus stop to Brandenburg Gate – “Let’s take a bus!”, “Let’s a train!”, “Let’s take a tram”, when all these lines are ignored, in the heat of the moment, everyone agrees to walk. Only 7 km? Sure we can do this! (Big mistake). Yes, there is no better way to explore a new city than on foot. But, when there are 24 hours ahead with no place to stretch your legs, it can be a little tiring. Nevertheless, it was amazing! Saw a building of Berlin university, the Victory Column and along with all this, beautiful weather (drizzling throughout). Just wonderful!
Hungry all the time – This was one of the most important highlights during the entire walk. I don’t know it was the weather or walking or having woken up early, but it triggered the hunger button for the day (all day!). When we were all done with the bag full of food, which each of us carried, slowly everyone started searching for cheapest eat-outs or street food. We were pretty successful, considering we were in Berlin after all.

It will rain if its new year – As much as we all ‘looouvveee’ the rains(sometimes), we weren’t prepared for it as much. Some of us started getting really cold, and I found it really funny, that we had to buy thermals from some passing by show rooms, go to a public washroom or a restaurant bathroom and change into them. Really fun times. You wouldn’t normally do such things with parents, why? Because you would be getting scolded for the reason of not being prepared :D
Source: http://goo.gl/D5ywU3
Get drunk (just a little) – I know that people eat food or drink energy drinks to get some energy, but we got drunk (a little bit). This was for 2 reasons. First, because its new year and second, because hopefully being drunk does not remind us that we will stand for next 12 hours straight!
Source: http://goo.gl/r2PDje
Identical photo session – It was all our first time to Brandenburg Tor (means Gate) and thanks to our generation, pictures begin. One after the other, every single one of us with same pose in front of the gate. It was hilarious at first, but after 15 minutes or so, people stare and you have to just move :D.
Source: http://goo.gl/ajBPI9
Sneak in the alcohol, like a boss! – It isn’t allowed to carry any alcohol inside the 2km premises before the gate. But, students, less budget, new years eve, it all combines to – ‘we will take everything that we have with us, like a boss!’ and surprisingly, we did. I am still unclear on the details, but we did. Not so proud of it, but saving 30€ per head for the drinks, it was pretty awesome.
Source: http://goo.gl/ajBPI9
Develop a taste to all kinds of mixed music – When you have to stand at the same spot for the next 9 and half hours, the best thing is to enjoy your environment. No matter you understand the words or the music, it is absolutely worth it to share those moments with some of the closes people to you :-)
Barely able to see a thing, but absolutely worth it!
Whatsapp location if you are lost – Crowd was increasing by the minute, and we wanted to retain the spot we got, which was fairly close to the main stage and the gate. But there was just one problem – thanks to continuous drinking, we had to take turns to go to the washroom. Now although, it was barely 50m away, with that kind of crowd, you need at least 15 minutes to get out and reach there, 30 minutes to get a free washroom and at least 45 minutes to return to the same spot. After being lost in crowd, twice, we decided to send the location via whatsapp and that person would follow the way back. It was the first time, I had made use of the location services so efficiently! :D

Sing random Hindi advertisements to German songs – By 10 pm, it was cold, we were kinda drunk and after every 15 minutes or so, there was this one particular song that was being played. It was a German advertisement. But, to Indian ears, it sounded like Nerolac advertisement which used to be aired on TV when we were kids. So, each time it played, we sang that song, but in our version. It was absolutely amusing to all the people from various countries. By the end of that, they started enjoying the so-thought Bollywood song and sang along :D Here is that advertisement –
Enjoy the electrifying experience – This was my first live concert/musical show or however you would like to call it. It is just a different world all together to hear and see some amazing musicians playing live. We got to witness people crying at one point of time. Later I found out that they were that happy to see their favorite singers. Such memories are for life indeed. We got a chance to listen to “David Garrett”. For all those who don’t know him, like I didn’t, he is a world renowned violinist who released the album for Pirates of Caribbean movie :-) Please your ears and listen to this particular video below -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kge3xBeuArI
Welcome the new year like never before! – To the moments right before the clock strikes 12, you can literally start feeling each breath. The whole experience of welcoming the new year, along with a million others in the capital of Germany, is simply riveting! It was one of the best new year celebrations I have had, in a really really long time!

Those 24 hours brought a lot of happiness, excitement, tiredness but most importantly, it gave me one of the best memories during my stay here in Germany. If you live here, call your friends up, plan, take a bus and reach Silvester this year! You are not going to regret it!

“Exam ends. Direct me to shots.”
Source: https://goo.gl/d8UcCy
It was time. Something that I was waiting for over 2 months. After all, it was the second last exam of (perhaps) my life! Feeling pleased with myself, with 27 days holidays ahead, I left for Chemnitz.
Exam was fine. But more exciting came the Christmas celebrations. Christmas markets or weihnachtsmarkt was everywhere in Germany and I happen to have my next visit to Dresden Christmas market with 2 of my close friends. One of them was none other than my paten buddy, my first German friend and an absolute sweetheart!
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
After having some really delicious glühwein with tinch of amaretto (almond liquor) in it, I could feel my hands again and off we went to explore various stands of the market. She explained each and every reason behind the stalls. Where it originates, why is it special and how should it be treated/celebrated. When someone explains you the reason of things happening in your vicinity, it makes it all the more better to enjoy them and truly appreciate them.

It was wonderful.
Following that, in next few days, I also happen to visit the market of Chemnitz. It is not that big but nevertheless, it is the cutest little decorated market, which does complete justice to the festive season of Christmas.
Few days before Christmas, an idea just popped in my head, and I happen to just remember what a group of new juniors really wanted. They were missing snake and ladders (for all those who are not sure can check the explanation here) and so i decided to see some smiles and packed one. Sent it over with some other junior (and a big thanks to him for that). When they received the gift, the happiness I intended to see on their glowing faces just cannot be explained in words. I was so delighted to have made someone smile. And when they hand-made a thank you greeting card, well, all I can tell is, it was one of the most over-whelming moments after a really long time.
Following the gift, were all sorts of plans for party on Christmas eve. This being their first Christmas in Germany, it became all the more special for all of us. With lots of food, drinks and awesome music, the night was on a roll. By 1 am we found ourselves strolling from one dorm to another, and it couldn’t have been better. It started snowing. Perfect!
Source: http://goo.gl/KF1LUl
Snow fight, falling, slipping, making snow angels and selfies – it was all covered. Along with all these, one extra thing was also there, the urge to make snowballs, adding some liquor into it and eating it like a gola/chuski or in simple words shave ice. This too happened. And yes, the results of the alcohol manifested. Even though fun is of same level, our perception to it changes.
Night moving on to we going to another friend’s room, only to disturb him as well. This was at around 2 am. We realized that it was too late only when we saw some rays of sun falling into the room. Brilliant as it was, this was one of the best Christmas for me. The view from the window was mesmerizing and absolutely magical! Snow all around, rays of sun falling perfectly and it was indeed a perfect white Christmas-2014.

Although it wasn’t discussed my friends and I had bought gifts for each other, so all in all, Christmas was completed. It is wonderful how times flies and how unspoken words turn into matched frequency.
My vacations had just 9 more days remaining and I was getting close to my most awaited trip of the year to Silvester Party in Berlin! I had read all about it and seen videos but to be their live amongst thousands and thousands of people!

“Because best things happen when you least expect them…”
After a not so great first Christmas, it was December again, and the second Christmas in Germany was right around the corner. While there was reflection of festive season all around, well I had to wait for my turn. I had an exam before that. Along with work, reaching back home and studying, cooking and once in a while going out to explore, December began in its sweet ways.
I had booked my tickets for Chemnitz way in advance (because when it comes to going back to my first home in Germany, I do not want to take chances). Having applied for holidays not just for exam but making use of basic mathematics, I planned my December holidays in October. Working extra hours didn’t seem so bad now when I saw a platter of holidays opportunity right in front.
This was new for me. Work and study but overall a great experience. I hadn’t attended a single lecture of this subject (since I wasn’t even there at University) plus to add-on, this subject was taught in Deutsch (German) to add-on my horror. With the help of some really good team mates and friends, I was able to prepare for the exam.
Meanwhile, Christmas markets had been set up all over Germany. From small stalls to huge markets, it was an absolute delight to eyes. The decorations on each stall, the detailing with which every object was kept, just knocked my socks off! It was beautiful.
My first Christmas market visit was in Stuttgart. Here, there are 3 major markets that are set up each year and I got a chance to visit the one in heart of the city. The varieties of Lebkuchen (gingerbread), delicious flavors of Sauerkraut mit Bratwurst (cabbage-kinda-salad with hotdogs) in air and the aroma of theeee Glüwein (hot wine boiled with special spices), which is my absolute favorite, made all my worries of the upcoming exam vanish into the air.

I got to see the beautiful wooden carved elements, the colorful and cutest looking toys and all sorts of most traditional things from German culture, all at one place. The feeling of just being there infuses you with homesickness and no-worries-about-being-away-from-home at the same time (for people like me who stay away from home =) )
Even though I couldn’t buy much, I did get myself the most adorable looking Glühwein glass ever.
Anticipating snow each morning, made me wait for the snow even more. Although it had already started snowing in other northern parts of Germany, it wasn’t in the forecast for Stuttgart yet. So I shifted to keeping a check of snow alerts for Chemnitz.
The evening before I was to leave for Chemnitz, I get a call from a colleague/friend of mine and he just asked me to look outside the window. It was spectacular, snowing just the way I had imagined in my head! Streets and everything around covered in a not-so-thin-not-so-thick layer of snow. He asked, “Care for a walk?”, and I packed myself 4 folds and off went for my first snow walk this season.
The walk was simply beautiful, just for the fact that I could not just feel each flake falling on my face, but I could just walk feeling content after such a long time. It had been a few months of loneliness but never had I felt this peaceful in the silence that surrounded me.
Returning back to room after an hour or so, having packed my bags for the 26 days vacation + exam ahead of course, I left for Chemnitz. Having no idea how many blessings Christmas truly had in store for me this year.

“A German – once a friend, forever a friend”

It had been almost a year in Germany and by now I was certain of one thing – Germans are straightforward and honest people. Period.
I was proven time and again for the same on many occasions by all my friends and acquaintances of this land. So naturally, I believed them if they told me something. But that is not the right thing – and I learned that the hard way.
Searching for a new place to live in a country where you are foreign to the language can get really difficult, especially if your trying to search in a city where you know absolutely no-one. We all have been through home (sorry room) searching phase sometime or another. This was my 4th time in one year and this is what happened.
I managed to get a place for a month and by the time I settled down, I had to move to this place in heart of Stuttgart. It was barely 10 sq meter but I was so excited, since I would be right between all the people and the idea itself was fun. After my awesome meet with the FSG officials and Oktoberfest rolling out of the window, I packed my bags and started cleaning the room, when I received an email and I what I learned from that mail was that I wasn’t getting the new room due to a reason – the person who is living in this room was not ready to move out! (What rubbish! As an owner you should have informed that person way in advance and also made sure it’s empty when you know someone else will be occupying that room the next day!)
I made a call immediately to that person and expected no more – obviously he would not answer any of my calls. I admit, I was afraid. Not only for the fact that I didn’t have a clue what would happen but also for the fact that I had to give the keys of present room on Monday morning. All I had was a beautiful Sunday ahead where “everything” in Germany is closed and that is not the time when people are in town (most of the times).
Trying to maintain my annoyance and anxiousness at bay, I started calling up all the people I knew at Stuttgart (more or less in any way possible) and at the same time started searching for hostels. Well, I had forgotten that Oktoberfest was its full swing and no room was available for less than 80euros/night (screwed!!!). Nevertheless, my new friend from work whom I met during the trip to Austria picked up the call and he told he would arrange something and let me know by night. The problem was, he was also moving to a new place that weekend, and I knew it was too much to ask for. But the call was made and I couldn’t take back my request.
I did relieve a call from him and he informed that it could be possible for me to at least have a place to sleep from Monday onwards. He had moved into an apartment on 4th floor and there was a room in attic with a couch. Hearing those words was like blessing to me at that time. Although there was one more tiny problem – no heater, water or food possibility until I stayed there. Nonetheless, I gladly accepted this wonderful help.
Monday began with leaving the room, submitting the keys, moving to new room in attic and reached office the next day. I cannot stress enough how happy I felt when I was at work. My colleagues, the HR department, and all my acquaintances – a big thank you for all the support you provided me with during one of the most tough times I faced in Germany. Thank you ‘Vector Informatik GmbH’ for all the help and support when I needed it the most. Not only did I get a lot of people willing to share their unused room for temporary purpose, but also they started searching for places for me. I did that too, all day that day. By evening, I wasn’t in any mood to go back to my room, it was to sleep and I just wandered around the city, trying to figure out what was next in store.
That was one of the longest, more depressing walks I had taken in this city. Although I had a roof to sleep under, a wonderful home back at India, I felt homeless. (Literally and and figuratively). I wished no one ever went through that. Now that I think of it, maybe, for some of you it may not be a big deal. but, at that time, for me, it was my first big hitch and I had to face it (no choice).
Next day, after half day of work, I started calling up all people who had posted their room for rent and after 165 calls I got one positive reply. She asked me to visit the room that evening if possible. Not wanting to let this slip by, I asked my friend (who’s place I was currently living in) to join me if possible. And after work, we left to see that place.
It was a small decent place, with basic amenities, no kitchen, shared bathroom and building where only old people lived (all floors possible), except the young lady who was showing me the place. It was her mother’s and she was not in the country. I asked my friend’s opinion, he told it was nice for the price I was gonna pay. I payed the caution deposit immediately and she handed me over the keys. Done. I had a place again!!!
New place…
Kitchen and shower…
Sweet dreams!
He helped me move all my things in his car that night itself and after 96 hours, I finally had home cooked food and got amazing sleep.
There is something in store for everyone and someone’s always watching over you…=)

Dirlndl and beer – signs of turning into German for sure!
My approach towards daily life in Stuttgart was starting to change, since my return from the trip to Austria. I started trying to make an effort to understand people from this part of Germany and hence began my observation. As much as I hated the room, I started going out for few hours during the weekend and one such wonderful weekend was while the Oktoberfest was going on. Formula Student Germany officials had decided to have a ‘unofficial meet of the officials’.
I was invited as well, and luckily it was organized in a beautiful part of Stuttgart. Of course I didn’t know how to reach there or come back (since it might be late), but nonetheless, everything works out really well after all. Two of my friends who live a little away from Heidelberg were driving to Stuttgart for the same evening celebrations, gladly accepted to pick me up from my place and drop me back on the way back as well. Since that was sorted, I decided to leave my room and attend the meet.
We reached there by 7pm and that evening I learnt a lot about how Germans truly relax and have a nice time in their back garden with friends. It is not that complicated after all. There is a lot of apple juice, beer, meat, bread and vegetables – along with more drinks and board games for after dinner.
I was more than happy to see many members of FSG and started interacting, having a nice time. The person who had organized the evening, asked em if I have ever tried a Dirndl? As much as I wanted to reply, I tried understanding what he asked. He then explained that the dress that is worn by girls during oktoberfest and so on. that’s when it strike me what he meant and i finally understood what it’s called. I obviously had no experience with that dress what so ever. He decided why not try it, and he would wear what men/boys wear during fests. So I was given a beautiful Dirndl and I changed. It did take me more time to understand or figure out how to wear it than actually time taken in wearing it. And it was wonderful! Absolutely different and I liked it too. When I walked out into the garden again, the reaction was really welcoming. It felt good to be an the only ausländer(foreigner) wearing a traditional dress of Oktoberfest.
This was followed by enjoying on trampoline and finally giving up after being hit by the tree three times! Awesome fun!
Then came the smell of appetizing food from the barbeque section and food was all there. With varieties of meat, breads, vegetables and dips – it was a great dinner with some really awesome people. Weather was brilliant and started to get people’s jackets on them. Cozy indoors set the right mood for some crazy and extremely fun drinking-board-games. Well, in most of my social events/parties with Germans, I have played variety of board games and has to include drinking – mainly shots of Jägermeister (which completes the day sooo well!).
The evening was coming to an end for me, since I had to travel back and after bidding farewell, I was ready to go home and start packing. There was just one more day I had to move to a wonderful apartment which was right in the center of the city (Couldn’t wait to get out of here).
After reaching room, I found something at my door step, it was none other than a really sweet and thoughtful gift by my room mate – a German comic book, along with a map of the are I was living in at that time!
I was extremely happy and it got a step closer to my love towards this country and its inhabitants.

“The world of achievement has always belonged to the optimist!”
Beginning…
It was the second day of the trip and breakfast was ready at 6. We had breakfast and cyclists gathered their bicycles and people who had opted to walk, were taken in the bus. I had signed up for walking. With a glass of juice and slice of apple, I thought I was ready for the day ahead. Didn’t know what I had signed up for at that moment but the time they dropped us at the foot of one of the mountains of Tirol, with an approximate height of whooping 13,000 feet! I had no idea till where we had to climb/trek. And thus began, my first trek ever. There were a lot of colleagues who chose to trek, and by now I had learnt that German’s love the nature and age no bar, they all love such activities. Following them, I made my way till about 2000 feet at ease. Couldn’t see where we had to reach, or how much more longer it would take, me and my 200ml of water didn’t know if I could do this. My stomach had already started rumbling and sweat had taken over my clothes. I did see some colleagues take a detour and choose the cable car to reach the top. I could have done that, but some really nice people motivated me to continue and see the view from top after I have climbed it myself.
Choosing that option seemed really wise, until I completed 2000 odd more feet. The view was just spectacular and kept getting better.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
At one point of time, I didn’t want to think about the condition of my feet at all. My shoes were starting to give up (I wasn’t prepared for a trek, at all!), I just needed water, and not to walk for a few hours. That should have done the trick.
But I couldn’t stop for more than 2 minutes, else I would have been lost amongst the trees and trails (or so I thought). Moving ahead, we reach exactly half way to the spot we were supposed to reach. I could finally see some routes coming in sight but no sign of the spot. Followed by 2 more hours of trek, we finally reached a place where I could see the place where we should have been an hour ago. It seemed right there, but my body had given up. Last 200 meters of climb was no way possible and finding no other trace of transport except own feet, I had no choice but to continue.
This was by far my hardest 25 minutes of that day and experience of my life. Every step was pushing my limit as the minutes passed. I just needed some source of energy and I had nothing in my bag. Looking up, seeing my colleagues cheer and giving the push that was just needed for the last few meters, I finally reached the place that was supposed to be reached.
The exhaustion, pain, hunger, thirst all vanished into thin air when I looked up to the view in front of me.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
My limits and potential was never pushed this far ever before. This may be a normal thing for most people here and around the world, but for me it was the realization of unlimited possibilities that I found within myself.
I wanted to give up so many times during the trek, but if I would have, the feeling would have not been the same. Followed by an amazing lunch at the place, we had 2 hours before reporting back down at the bus. We could walk down a different route or take the cable car. I decided to take the cable car, but upwards. The anxiety of seeing the view right from the peak encouraged me to go there.
A nice colleague decided to accompany me, and we went all the way to the peak. I have always been afraid of heights but this blew my fear into thin air. Absolutely stunning view when I reached, and no words can bring justice!!! (Have a look yourself)

The power of nature is that it makes you understand such essential things of life, which no matter how many times told before has no impact.
Realizing that everything, problems, people and I are such a minute part of this world and along with that comes all the problems. Our problems are resized in our own minds as per our thoughts, whereas they shouldn’t be given the space that we actually do. Believing things will be fine with time, and facing them positively does not solve the problem, but gives the confidence to.
Having one of the most peaceful minutes after a long time, I took the cable car and reached the same place we had climbed to. Having one more hour in hand I decided to take a nap under the best natural blankets of nature – the sky. With sun shining bright and clear sky, I took a wonderful nap for next 45 minutes. I cannot describe the feeling to waking up to such a majestic view, not having a single worry of line on forehead.
After which taking the cable car down and reaching the buses, I had a beautiful ride back to Stuttgart. With all the memories, and fears that had dissipated into the air, I was ready to look at my present situation in Stuttgart with a complete fresh outlook and turn the page.

It was time for a new chapter after all…
Glimpse of stupendous journey to Area47 – Day 2! https://cubeoflife.wordpress.com/2015/05/18/glimpse-of-stupendous-journey-to-area47-day-2 My second fear - knocked out finally! "The world of achievement has always belonged to the optimist!" It was the second day of the trip and breakfast was ready at 6.
“Feel the fear and do it anyway!”
Rafting at Area 47!
Thought of spine chilling, ice cold waters have always given me the shivers and looking down from a tall building makes me hold on to anything that’s around me. So, apart from mouse and spiders these are me fears. Or should I say,I’ve crossed 2 of them off my list. Thanks to the trip to Area 47, Tirol, Austria.
The meeting time outside the main building at Stuttgart was at 6:15am. Ready with a bag, and knowing absolutely no one there, I stood looking around and wondering if I had made the right choice to come. It was going to be a beautiful day, the weather had predicted. So I decided to go with that attitude and waited for the buses to arrive.
It took us 4 and half hours to reach the spot. And my god, as we entered Austria, it was a completely different feeling. I no longer worried of being alone for next 48 hours, thanks to the breathtaking beauty of Tirol,Austria.

The true meaning of green being depicted by nature…
We had the complete itinerary given to us a week before the trip and I noticed almost everyone had a copy printed. I entered the area, just a glimpse of Area 47, and things ahead gave me a jolt in my hungry stomach.

There were things that I had never seen and there were some that I had seen on some adventure series on TV. I was delighted. There was wonderful lunch awaiting us, and everyone seemed to know each other. I started to look around and realized that all these activities would be much more fun, only if I knew someone.
Decided to start talking, and getting to know my colleagues. It was all in my head – how would they react, would anyone talk back, what if I have to spend my time alone and all sorts of non sense thoughts that come to me when I’m really hungry.
So decided to first eat and on the way, started meeting people. One after another, they started asking which department I was from, which country and so on. It got better by the time I finished my lunch. Much better indeed. By now I had some people to start my activities with. I joined them and we all changed for the fun ahead.
I started with the sliding area, to test the waters and oh man, they were ice cold! Although, that couldn’t hinder the experience one bit. After that since ‘Blobbing’ , was too full I got a chance to try the new ‘Hydrospeed Slide’ which was absolutely embarrassing! This was my first time water surfing, and it took me 20 minutes just to get a hang on how to stand on it. Seems super cool in movies, this particular activity truly gave me a taste of cold water (again and again).
This was followed by the activity that I was soooo eagerly looking forward to – River rafting!!!
I had no experience of diving into rivers that flow out from peaks, not did I ever row a boat. Technically this was a raft, but nonetheless needed awesome amount of energy. We dressed into the suits (which apparently protects you from the ice water), walked around 1.5kms and a bus took us to some other place. From there we walked and reached where we could see the rafts. The training began for next half an hour and off we went, with teams carrying their rafts respectively, we walked and reached a river shore (if that’s a word).
Our trainers asked us to jump into the water and ‘get a feel’. Well, I cleverly (and foolishly) stayed outside and waited to sit in the raft. There is a particular way of sitting on the raft, else you fall. Simple. So, we sat and off we rowed. This was white water river and the view was just spectacular! High mountain ranges on one side, a natural path for walking on another. Some fishermen just standing and catching their dinner and some just relaxing by the river. It was wonderful until our trainer asked to jump off the raft backwards, one by one. When I see no end, white water with foam due to pressure, no I cannot do this.
First round was skipped by a nice smile and praying he doesn’t ask again. Water was starting to catch more speed and by now we were all soaked. There came small downfalls and some sudden little jerks (which moved all of us from one side to another). He asked us to jump once more, before the water got more dangerous ahead. This was just to practice that if we fall in high tides, what happens then and how to get back on raft (if you can spot it that is).
I had no choice this time. Without thinking, I jumped backwards and into the spine chilling waters of river Sanna. This was my first moment of truth. Never have I felt so free in my life, and as if I was the happiest person or rather the happiest I have ever been in a long long time. I started swimming with the tides when I heard the trainer asking me to get back on the raft. I didn’t want to leave this moment. Although I could feel parts of body starting to become numb as seconds passed, I wanted to just be there. I came swimming (or rather with force of water) back to raft and hold on to one of the ropes on the outer sides. I couldn’t push myself up though. I was pulled by my other team members and the journey continued.
That one jump was like a sudden exhilaration, which I truly needed at this time in my life.
After 1 hour and 45 minutes, we were back to shore, carrying the raft together and heading back to Area 47. Later I saw some spectacular views right outside my room, while heading to the enticing dinner that was awaiting.

There was a table with a girl and two guys. They seemed like students, and friendly too. With just a smile and seeing same wine glass with them as well, marks the beginning of a new friendship automatically. The scenery, the food, the fine wine and company of some absolutely wonderful people marked the end of my first day at Area 47, Tirol, Austria.
Looking forward to the next day, and thanking Vector Informatik GmbH with all my heart, I was dropped to my room by my new friends at 12:30am. Thus marking the first fear that I had overcome on the first day.

Solitude at it’s best…
I had just started getting into routine of work-life. Going in the morning, back by evening, cooking, talking to parents and sleeping early. Well sounds boring. I agree.
But what was not boring was, my life at work. It was going great and the amount of learning was unimaginable. It made me so much more happier and built my…

Let’s begin the learning….
It was the first day and like every other first day (at school, high school, college, leaving for germany, at university), this day too was extremely exciting for me. Ready at 6:50 am, I didn’t have much to do. I packed my lunch, did my prayers and one thing was most important that was still pending – calling up mumma & papa. I did that, and after getting all their wishes and blessings, I left for office by taking the appropriate trains and changes.
I was asked to report by 9, nonetheless, keeping sometime in hand, I reached office half an hour early. While I was waiting in a beautiful room, some more people joined one after another. By 9am, there were 20 of us. The HR representative walked in and asked us to follow.
Before I continue, you must know this was my first time ever – working/being a part of an organization. So everything that happened was absolutely fascinating for me.
So we were taken to get our photos clicked for the ID card and then we were taken to a conference room for the formal introduction. After 2 and half hours of German which kind-of went flying above my head, and signing some sheets (which I think were based on some rules and usage of internet and some more things like that).
All that I could curse myself was for not being able to do more levels of German before coming here. But I didn’t have the time to, or opportunity to. (kicking myself in head even to this day).
We were split based on different departments and we started following the concerned person to various buildings.

I was dropped at a room where I met my first colleague (he turned out to be my adviser and a friend as time progressed). This room was brightened by the direct sunlight and 4 tables. To understand the intranet, site plan and many other things at Vector, my day made its way to lunch. Lucky for me, even my colleague gets his lunch from home, so that was my first lunch and a lot of interaction. This not only helped me to work, but to feel really comfortable in my new environment.
We get bottled water, 7 kinds of tea, incredible coffee from the machines, orange juice, apple juice and cola at office which we do NOT have to pay for. Such things got me so ecstatic on my first day (still does in fact, I won’t lie).
My mentor was on holiday for 2 days including that day and I was explained about my first task after lunch – since I couldn’t wait to get started!
Using a German layout keyboard, interface and discovering the fact that I was the only Indian at that time at Stuttgart office, gave me a complete new thrill.
All those preconceived notions about offices (which I have been hearing all this while from everyone) was completely ruled out of my head and hence began a new chapter of my life!
Stepping into professional world... Here is my experience on first day of internship... Let me know what you think :) "Success is the ability to move from one failure to the next with enthusiasm" It was the first day and like every other first day (at school, high school, college, leaving for germany, at university), this day too was extremely exciting for me.
One of the most thrilling day of my life – the day I visited “Europa Park”!
It is the largest amusement park in Germany and also, second largest in Europe following the Disneyland at Paris! With my not so thrilling start at Stuttgart, my friends make my beginning a really memorable one.
We were at the train station by 4am and as we learned that we have a special combi ticket for the entrance and travel, well that just boosted our spirits even more (who doesn’t like saving some money to spend it on extra french fries, right?). And off we went…We had to change 2 trains and then take a bus, which dropped us right outside the park. We could see the park from at least a km away and it got bigger as we reached nearer. Massive as it was, we realized its impossible to cover in a day and as much as the hotel/resort of the park was inviting, exhibit A –
we had to finish all roller coaster rides before closing time and leave.
Trying to decipher where we were on the map, rather which country we were on (since it has 13 countries theme lands within), it took us 23 minutes to reach our first ride for the day – Mercedes Silver Star roller coaster.
A new concept that I learnt that day was the digital display outside every ride which displayed exact waiting time of each ride and not a single ride waiting time was found to be less than 45 minutes that day. We stood in the queue and as we saw each ride after every few seconds, our patience was draining out fast. As we proceed the queue splits into two – the ones who want to sit right in front and other everywhere after first row. So as much as we wanted to sit for the ride, we decided to take the first row queue. Another half an hour extra wait and stomach rumbling with excitement, we took our seats and off it went. As slowly as it could, it inclined upwards and there was a point where we didn’t see anything except the clear blue sky and sunlight hitting the eyes and then there was – 80 degrees downwards and next 3 minutes of don’t know what’s going on. Up-down-rotate-side-and some angles that I am at loss to explain. Smiling to glory and every part of body still in the spin, we came out of our first ride.
That was it. We continued the waiting-rides-waiting-rides 7 hours straight into the day. The rides were not just a fun experience but the work gone into each ride is impeccable! Some of the photos which are collected can be seen as follows:

By the time we covered all the roller coasters we WANTED to ride in at any cost was completed, we were bushed! All we needed was food!
Having a lot of varieties of food based on countries that were roaming in, made it so much fun to have Greek salad, Italian pizza and French baguettes as options! These are just the names I remember, but there were dozens more.
After all this, we got an hour and a half to roam about and see the beauty of the park. These parts were designed exclusively for children but oh my God, they were beautiful. Not just the detailing, but the whole experience makes you feel you’re in a different world all together.
If you want to forget all your worries and take a break, definitely visit Europa Park and have an indelible story for life!
You could have a look at their website: Europa Park – Theme Park!
That day didn’t leave me exhausted, instead with a captivating start for my next phase – Internship.
