genuinely just confused as to how one sees your mom win a gold medal. talks about that every time they talk about the olympics, even before they got to italy. talks about her with so much respect and admiration. mentions that the first person he thought of when he scored was megan keller because she did the exact same thing. and then goes to the locker room and laughs at a misogynistic joke made about them by tr*mp? does something like pucks and pages and then also goes and has a blast with p*tel in the locker room? it’s so fucking disappointing bc i feel like they’ve done stuff that shows that they know better. they’ve surprised people (positively) with stuff they’ve done, said and supported. and now we’re here somehow. like what you wear the usa jersey, drink two beers and suddenly your moral compass is nowhere to be found all of a sudden. the pendulum can not fucking swing that violently from one end to the other.

I don’t know how to say this eloquently enough for it to make sense, but there comes a point in every hockey fan’s life where you have to make peace with the majority of players in the sport and on your team being conservative. If they’re American, they’re likely Trump supporters. If they’re Canadian, they would likely vote for him if they could (just ask Gretzky). Even the PWHL isn’t immune from terfs and MAGAs.

There also comes a point in every hockey fan’s life where you decide that loving the sport, even if it doesn’t love you back, means wanting to make sure that hockey really is for everyone. It’s not letting the conservatives force you out of your fandom just so that a right-leaning space becomes even more of an echo chamber. It means doing your part in growing the game and making it a safe place for all.

And yeah, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. The reality is nothing like the fics we read and write on here (which are fictional for a reason … because the fiction is meant to be enjoyable), but that doesn’t mean hockey isn’t for you! It doesn’t mean you have to stop cheering. It does however mean that you quickly come to understand that you can’t place players on a pedestal.

That’s the reality of being a hockey fan.

So believe me, I know. I’ve lived it for twenty years. And it’s not pretty. But it is getting better, and I like to believe that one day hockey really will be for everyone.

that vid of everyone laughing at trump’s “joke” about having to also “invite the women” or he’d be impeached that the whole group laughed at is just replaying over and over in my head. that women’s hockey team is full of elite athletes who play the same sport as all of them (whilst getting paid practically nothing in comparison), and have won olympic gold twice in the last 3 games. ellen hughes is a former team usa player and a pioneer of women’s international hockey and is on the development staff for that very same women’s team who was just the butt of a joke in a locker room with two of her sons present. and yeah, i know, maybe it shouldn’t be surprising, but it’s still really fucking disappointing.

This in and of itself has genuinely made me upset. I expected it from a good chunk of the players but to see Jack and Quinn joining in fucking sucks. It’s such a slap in their mom’s face. I can only hope to god Ellen saw those videos and gives them a lecture to hell and back. It’s so disheartening to see how the team all laughed at the expense of their fellow USA hockey team. It sucks that the women in sports no matter what sports will always be treated like a bug on their shoe to any man in sports. They deserve the same fucking recognition.

That entire post game thing is exactly why I didn’t want USA to win. That’s the exact reason I rooted for fucking Canada. I rooted for players I fucking loathe in normal nhl seasons. The chucklefuck brothers had me rooting for fucking Tom Wilson and Brad Marchand. Any other time you will find me hating them but I was fucking pulling for those dickheads because I knew this fuck ass administration would do shit like that. I knew they would be licking diaper dictator’s ass.
