“What’s wrong, Kitty?” she asked. Her voice was full of kindness, her deep blue eyes reflecting her deep concern for him.
“Nothing, M’Lady,” Chat said, making sure to smile brighter. He didn’t want to worry her. She was much better like this, serene and at rest, clinging to him like he provided her with more warmth than the sunset they watched together. “Just lost in thought, I suppose,” he added.
Ladybug seemed unconvinced, but Chat wrapped his arm around her shoulder, rubbing reassurances on her arm.
“Don’t worry about me. Tell me about your day. Did you create anything new?” he asked earnestly. He loved hearing Ladybug talk about her latest creations. Even if he already knew about them.
Ladybug and Chat Noir spend seemingly peaceful days in an idyllic paradise that she created just for him.

Summary
While the rest of the city is enamored by the idea of soulmates, Ladybug feels like the only one who finds the entire concept ridiculous. Unlike her partner—ever the romantic.
And it turns out Ladybug isn’t the only one. When an akumatized villain appears, she forces her victims to not only see their soulmates, but also the most difficult moment in their future—a moment that can only be avoided if the fated pair doesn’t get together.
Chat Noir would have been thrilled at the discovery that Ladybug was his soulmate, if only it wasn’t at the cost of her death. Even Ladybug is devastated to realize for the first time what could have been between the two.
Reluctantly, the partners make the decision to leave what they have learned about each other behind. Ladybug decides to finally do something about her long-time crush, and Chat Noir begins to see his classmate in a whole new light.
Surely, nothing will go wrong when Adrien Agreste and Marinette Dupain-Cheng begin dating.

Chapter Five
Adrien's ride home for lunch was excruciating. Agony. Every second, the fear increased.
He wished it could go on forever.
Father was at home waiting for him, no doubt anxious to discuss the school's phone call.
When Adrien had been late to class, his father was notified immediately of his son's disappearance and was called again five minutes later when the principal had discovered him in the teacher's lounge without an excuse.
What could he say? That cats were naturally curious? That he was obsessed with finding the identity of a girl who'd given him a gift? (Only that second one was a lie. He wasn't obsessed.)
His father was already at the top of the stairs when Adrien walked into the house. His hands were behind his back, facing away from his son, looking up at the giant portrait.
From just his rigid posture, Adrien could clearly imagine his angry expression, the exact force behind the shake of his head to express his disgust at his son's actions. He'd already been imagining it the entire ride home.
"You should be studying for the brevet instead of breaking rules, Adrien," Gabriel said. "I am extremely disappointed. What did you want in the teacher's lounge? Why were you skipping class this close to your test date?"
From the bottom of the stairs, Adrien shook his own head, since his father couldn't see him. It wasn't like studying for a few more days was going to give him an edge. If he didn't know it now, he didn't know it. Cramming wasn't going to make any difference.
But that wasn't the answer that his father wanted or expected. "I was looking for notes for the brevet," he said. It seemed like it would be the most understandable excuse, even if it wasn't going to get any pity from his father.
"You may go to your room," he said. "You can study while you eat your lunch."
Adrien knew that wasn't the end of it, even as he trudged up the steps to obey.
The dismissal was just to let him sit and squirm and think about what other punishments might be imminent, what other privileges he could still take away to ensure good behavior.
"The better you do on the brevet," Gabriel said, "the more choices you'll have for lycee and the programs you can take."
"I know," Adrien said. He was halfway up the stairs, and Gabriel still hadn't turned around to look him in the eye.
It was probably a bad sign, but at the moment Adrien was just happy he didn't have to talk to his father face-to-face.
What would he lose? He had so little to give up these days.
"They've given you a detention this afternoon," Gabriel said, as Adrien leveled with him.
"I know."
"I've had to rearrange your schedule to accommodate it."
"I'm sorry, Father," Adrien said.
Gabriel hummed dismissively, letting Adrien know that he wasn't nearly sorry enough, not yet.
Back in his room, Adrien grabbed a handful of stars and stuffed them into his pockets. They were fresh ones, the edges not yet softened from being opened several times.
He'd need them later.
Detention, his very first one. He would need something to get him through the worry of what his father's reaction would truly be.

Chapter Four
With the handwriting clue going nowhere, Adrien knew he had to take extra steps. Midterms and exams were something everyone had to take, everyone wrote on them, and he knew they were probably saved somewhere.
Like the teacher's break room, maybe?
Adrien didn't consider himself an impulsive person, but as he walked by the teacher's lounge, the door was cracked open and the hallway was deserted. His driver had dropped him off earlier than usual, and no one was around to witness his momentary indecision.
The inside was visible, just barely. A sliver of the room greeted him, filing cabinets taunting. He shut his eyes and kept going, only to back up and walk past it again, peeking without getting too close. Then he nudged the door with his toe.
It creaked, and no one on the inside said anything, so he pushed harder, swinging open to an abandoned room full of possibilities. If he could find stacks of tests, one from every student, it would be easy to compare handwriting.
He crept into the room, checking the hallway behind him before disappearing and closing the door with a soft click.
The teacher's lounge looked like a converted classroom. The desks had been removed, but there was a whiteboard at one side. Worn out chairs that looked like they'd come secondhand were crammed into the space along with a few tables, at least one of which was tilting to the side.
There were no windows in this room, which is probably why it had been demoted from classroom status and given to the teachers. Nothing said "thank you" like a windowless room and beat up furniture.
The filing cabinets were at the back of the room, gray metal, each with three drawers. The top drawer of the farthest left seemed like the logical place to start. He pulled gently, waiting for the lock to catch, but it didn't. Inside - he held his breath - were just extra coffee mugs. Deflated, he went to the next drawer, which held plastic forks and plates. The third had a stash of candy. Well.
Adrien was being impulsive, but not to the point of reckless. He wasn't about to steal from the teachers (or break his diet). The next filing cabinet just held paper of different colors, crammed into every drawer.
He looked through the stack, rifling through it just in case, but he knew he'd struck out here. The third cabinet was completely empty.
He glanced around the rest of the room, hoping for another cabinet or maybe a stack of ungraded homework, but there was nothing.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway. How much time had passed?
It had only felt like a minute or two, but he had been very thorough, so it might have been longer. He probably only had a few minutes left to look before school started and he would be missed.
He searched around the sides of the room. There were several tables with drawers, and he opened each one. Most of it was boring, office supplies, pencils. The only interesting thing there was an empty butter container in the shape of a corn on the cob. He had to admit teachers were a weird bunch.
He finally declared this idea a bust and was about to leave when the door handle rattled and the door swung open. It was too late to dive for cover, too late to think of a story. He only had enough time to stare directly into the face of the man striding into the room. The principal.

Chapter Three
Marinette and Adrien walked down the hallway toward their class. Stephanie was safely tucked away in her own classroom, red-rimmed eyes and puffy cheeks the only evidence of what had happened in the courtyard.
The note was folded roughly in Adrien's pocket, already forgotten. The handwriting was the biggest clue that he had about the identity of the star creator.
"Good morning, Miss," Adrien said as he walked into the classroom. He held the door open for Marinette, and she slipped in behind him. "May I help pass the tests back?"
Miss Bustier looked up from her desk the pile of papers on the corner waiting to be distributed. "Of course, Adrien. Thank you."
He eagerly grabbed the stack, looking down at the first one. Chloe's. As he suspected, the handwriting looked nothing like what was written on the stars. The familiar wave of relief hit him just as strongly to have the confirmation.
In two quick strides he was across the room, slapping the test onto her table. She had her face turned away from him, engrossed in a conversation with Sabrina, or maybe pretending to be engrossed. Adrien couldn't spare the energy to care which it was.
He looked down at the next paper. This was Rose's. The letters were fluid and curvy and not at all like the handwriting that he saw last night. It - and the messages - were crisp in his mind.
He walked it up to her slowly. "Here you go," he said, and tossed it onto her desk.
He stood by her desk for a few seconds, looking at the next name. That was Kim. The letters were too spiky and too narrow. Not his.
Max's was next. His letters were very boxy and all the same distance apart. He hadn't written the stars either.
"Nino," Miss Bustier said, "could you help Adrien?"
"Sure thing, dude– ma'am."
A chair scraped behind Adrien, and he clutched the stack of papers closer to his chest reflexively.
"Here, let me grab some of those," Nino said.
Adrien hesitated only a second– he knew he was being silly– before he handed half the stack over to his friend.
"Yo, Marinette, this one's yours," Nino said. He jumped to the front of the room, tossing the paper down onto her lap before pulling out the next one with a flourish. "Hey, Lila!"
Adrien looked back at the stack of papers in his hands. There were only two left, neither one belonged to the mystery person.
It had been a silly idea to begin with, but there was no luck here.
-----------
A week later, Adrien had gone through half of the stars in his jar. He'd read that half multiple times, not wanting to dip into the reserves of new messages if he could help it.
At some point that afternoon, he'd realized that the handwriting looked vaguely like Ladybug's. (Which in turn, he'd convinced himself, looked like the mystery valentine he'd received last year. He was certain the Ls and Ns were all written the same way, at least.)
This, he was sure, was wishful thinking. He'd hardly ever seen Ladybug write anything, just stylized autographs and a few notes of encouragement here and there, hastily snatched away by fans before he could get a good look. He didn't really have enough to make a convincing comparison.
The wave of disappointment that hit him was growing familiar. What would it have been like if Ladybug had sent these things to him? It would have meant that she loved him. That they probably went to school together, since she knew where his locker was.
It would have meant that he could find her someday.
All of those were impossible thoughts and he pushed them away. They were too much to think about. Too much to hope for. Too crushing when the hope turned false.
Maybe he should ask for help. Someone like Rose or Marinette would never make fun of the star gifter, like Chloe had done today.
But he wasn't sure he wanted to even share the secret with anyone. It seemed too personal. And maybe they had left the spot empty on purpose. Remain anonymous.
Adrien shook his head. It was almost time for patrol. The light coming into his room was steadily turning from yellow to orange. Patrol would be good. It would distract him. He'd decide what to do tomorrow.
But tomorrow only brought bad ideas and a trip to the principal's office.

Chapter Two
Hands gripping the straps of his backpack, Adrien walked into the courtyard the next morning with a secret. Someone in this school had given him that jar last night. He wasn't sure who it was, but they were here somewhere. Were they watching him?
"Good morning, Adrien," Marinette said. She had walked up so quietly that he hadn't realized she was there until she started talking to him.
"Good morning," he said, releasing one strap of his backpack to wave at her.
"How was practice yesterday?" she asked.
He nodded, mind racing back to the gift. "Fine."
She brushed the hem of her shirt, even though he didn't see any dust or dirt on it. She smiled, but she couldn't look him directly in the eye. Huh. She hardly ever got flustered around him anymore, even though she used to all the time.
He wanted to ask her what was up, but he knew it would be useless and more likely to drive her off than get answers, and right now he'd rather have a friend to distract him. "How do you think you did on the test on Friday?" he asked instead.
She jumped like she had forgotten that they were talking and hadn't expected his reply.
"I think– I think I did fine. How about you?" Her face pinched.
Maybe trying to set her at ease with questions about a test wasn't the right move either, especially if he didn't know how well she'd done on it. Maybe she'd been worried about it. He should have asked her beforehand. "I'm sure you did great," he said quickly to try to cover his mistake.
"Yeah," she said slowly. "Probably."
This was going terribly and he wasn't sure why. Fortunately, he was interrupted by another girl approaching him. He recognized her face but didn't know her name. She was at least two years younger than him, and he'd only seen her briefly in the hallways.
"Here," she said, holding out a piece of paper to him. It had been folded into thirds and had doodles of flowers and stars along the edge. The stars caught his attention.
He unfolded it quickly, only to realize it wasn't the same handwriting.
"Dear Adrien," it read. "You are the most wonderful, beautiful–"
He stopped reading, his face heating up.
"What is that?" Chloe asked. She leaned into his shoulder to get a better look at the note.
He folded it, but not quickly enough.
"A love letter," she sneered. "What's someone like her giving you a love letter for? She's not in our league at all."
Adrien tried tucking the letter out of sight. It hadn't been the same handwriting. He was mostly relieved, but also a little disappointed that he hadn't learned the identity of his mystery gift giver. He hadn't been expecting that.
"It's just a letter, Chloe. It's none of your business," he snapped.
"Adrien," she cooed. "I'm just looking out for you. You really don't want attention from people like this, do you?"
"There's a lot of people I don't want attention from," he said, staring right at her. She didn't seem to get the implication.
"Of course not. So why don't you send her along?"
"Chloe," he said, ducking out from underneath her arm. "Thank you. But I don't need your help." He put a hand on the shoulder of the other girl. He should asked her name, but he didn't want to seem too friendly toward her.
He heard a sniffle and looked over. The unnamed student was crying, the first tear cutting down her cheek. The clusters of students in the courtyard all had turned and were staring.
"It's all right, Stephanie." Marinette was at the girl's other side, threading her hand through her arm to help lead her away. "Why don't we go sit down, all three of us?" She nodded toward a bench at the edge of the courtyard.
"Or just the two of us," Chloe said, trying to grab Adrien's hand.
He danced out of the way, keeping a firm grip on Stephanie's shoulder. "Yes, let's go."
He followed the two girls, keeping the corner of his eye trained on Chloe, who vibrated with annoyance before flipping her hair and stomping off.
He kept his hand on Stephanie's shoulder, focusing on that. Now was the time to focus on righting Chloe's wrongs, not the time to think about who had given him his gift, and how he might find them.
