I want my mom to watch Good Omens 3 with me, so that I can yap about how it reminded me of Les Misérables. be it book or musical.
but because we are unlikely to watch it together, I will thought dump here:
[MAJOR SPOILERS ALERT FOR BOTH GO3 & LES MIS]
1) when Eric(?) screams HELL IS NOT MOCKED! HELL IS NOT MOCKED! (or hell cannot be mocked), you can guess who popped in my mind.
“I AM THE LAW AND THE LAW IS NOT MOCKED!”
2) when Crowley chose the people’s freedom at the expense of their own lives…
“who cares about y(our) lonely soul, we strive towards a larger goal… our little lives don’t count at all!”
“let others riseeee to take our place, until the Earth is FREEEEEE 🌎🕊️”
3) when Crowley held Aziraphale’s HAND BEFORE DYING. DYING FOR THE FREE WILL OF THE PEOPLE. PROBABLY IN FRONT OF A WINDOW. THE REVOLUTIONARY AND THE PERSON WHO BELIEVES IN HIM AND LOVES HIM AND WHO IS WILLING TO DIE BY HIS SIDE FOR IT.
5) I interpret the garden bookshop scene as Aziraphale and Crowley thinking of two very different things. which reminds me of the different states of mind between Enjorlas and Marius:
Crowley: “RED THE BLOOD OF ANGRY MEEEEN. BLACCCCKKK THE DARK OF AGES PAST. RED A WORLD ABOUT TO DAWN. BLAAAACK A NIGHT THAT ENDS AT LASSST.”
Aziraphale: “red, I feel my soul on fire, black, my world if s(he)’s not there… red, the colour of desire, black, the colour the despair…”
the tension between them was “better than an oooooperaaaa”
6) Aziraphale really fought and tried his best to make a difference, and yet… as Crowley asked, how did that turn out? [insert the entirety of Turning]
“fighting for a new world that would rise up like the sun. where's that new world now the fighting's done?”
“nothing changes, nothing ever can. round and round the roundabout and back where you began”
and for Aziraphale saying that it was worth a try: “damn their warnings damn their lies, they will see the people rise”
7) (a less connected one) he’s like the son I might’ve knowwwwwnnnnn if God had granted me a sooooon (in regards to Jesus and Harry the Fish)
8) the fact that everyone dies in the end
9) not to mention that both stories contend with faith (or questioning one’s beliefs in general)
if you put Grantaire, Enjorlas, Aziraphale and Crowley in a room with (or without) some wine, they’d have some really interesting conversations.
perhaps Javert and Jean Valjean might have interesting conversations with them, too. and the Thénardiers would fit perfectly downstairs.
the unintentional mirrors between these two stories made me enjoy this movie so much despite some of it’s messiness and wasted potential. but I don’t care because I had fun watching it, and will watch it again.
also: you have no idea how happy I was hearing Aziraphale mention Sunset Boulevard.
