i love watching the show my cat from hell because 9/10 times it usually features a heterosexual couple fighting over their hellion cat with one partner (usually the guy) saying “i cant stand this cat it needs to leave” while the girl is just like “no we can figure something out” and when jackson galaxy asks them if they would call it quits over the cat the guy is just like “ofc not she would always choose me over the cat” but if you zoom in on the girls face when he says that you know,,,,,you know,,,,,who will be leaving,,,,,,,,that house first

I was watching an episode w my dad and he couldn’t understand why they hadn’t gotten rid of the cat, but then I said something I guess he wasn’t expecting:

“The second a man gives me an ultimatum, the relationship is over.”

He kept harping that I’m going to be a very lonely woman with that attitude, so I told him that a man’s conditional affection, if it can be withdrawn or withheld over anything, is disingenuous and therefore worthless to me.

When you have a pet, that animal’s whole world revolves around you. They rely on you for everything. My pets are important to me, and if I got into a new relationship with somebody and they wanted them gone, I would dump that person’s ass in a heartbeat. My pets are my responsibility and my family. If a prospective partner really cared about me, they wouldn’t ever give me an ultimatum or try to force me to give up my animals. That’s not someone I want in my life.

“It’s the cat or me.” Welp, I guess I choose the cat because I’ve had him since he was a kitten and he doesn’t care for anyone but me. You can find somebody else to put up with your ultimatum bullshit.

not to be like “oh my psychology teacher said blah blah” but in my psychology class, we are learning about classical conditioning and pavlov’s dogs. and you can, of course, become conditioned to associate a stimulus (your favorite band/show) with another stimulus (your former friend/ex). but the thing is, when you keep interacting with the former stimulus with the latter, then a process called “extinction” happens, where you stop associating the stimuli when it keeps occurring without the other. so, this process of reclamation actually has a scientific basis!

A “squick” was a trope or topic that made the reader deeply uncomfortable, even might cause anxiety or intense emotional reactions

Everyone’s squicks were personal and diverse, and it was considered polite to say, “sorry I can’t read this because it squicks me, but you have fun in your corner doing what you doing”

Can we bring that back and reserve “trigger” for MI people who mean “if I see this I will have flashbacks and dissociate for hours”

I wasn’t aware this concept had fallen out of fandom.  Seriously, bring it back, it’s useful as hell.

Key to the concept of “squick,” as it was first explained to me lo these many years ago, is that it is not a value judgment.  If I say “mpreg is gross,” that’s a negative statement about mpreg (and, by extension, about those who enjoy writing or reading about it).  If I say “mpreg squicks me,” that’s a value-neutral statement about me and my emotional reactions and how they affect my enjoyment of fiction.

And, as OP says, it does not carry the implications of intensity or trauma that “trigger” does.  (Although I will point out that a trigger doesn’t have to cause flashbacks or dissociation.  There are people a lot better qualified than I am to talk about that.)

squick: Something that makes you go “ewwww” and wish you had never seen/read it. Something that makes you deeply uncomfortable. Something you’re not interested in reading/seeing/thinking about, ever.

trigger: Something that you associate with/reminds you of a past trauma (mental, emotional, or physical) and therefore triggers your personal reaction to trauma (be it flashbacks, panic/anxiety attacks, unhealthy behaviours, a crying jag, whatever).

Please, please, please don’t use them interchangeably.

imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.

for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.
