And more importantly, can they find out what's wrong with Remus before its too late? (They investigate Remus' disappearances, deal with a Defense Professor specializing in killing dark creatures, and drive McGonagell absolutely bonkers.)

i have this very strong headcanon that alphard black was a closeted gay man. he knew his family would cut him off and never accept who he was, so he just kept everyhtibg secret. carefully keeping to family expectations while playing up the "eccentric bachelor" persona. and eventually his charade had gone on so long, even he was starting to belive it.

and then along came sirius. this fiesty boy who refused to put up with any of the black family bullshit. alphard knew as soon as the boy went to school that they were the same, only sirius wasn't willing to hide himself.

so with his last act, alphard finally revealed himself, ever so slightly. by leaving everything he had to sirius, enabling sirius to have a kind of freedom alphard never could have.

I head canon Sirius found out about his crush on Remus when listening to James talk about lily. He noticed he felt the same butterflies for Remus which James claimed to feel for lily, noticed very specific details like how he would tense so slightly when someone stared at his scars, etc. which he had never noticed about any of his other friends. At first he was in denial telling James that those details James felt for lily did not mean he liked her because he did not want to come to terms with the fact that he was feeling the same way, but eventually he started to embrace it more and more and even took pride in it knowing his family would hate him even more for it.
