“you should really get to bed, babe,” Jake said softly on the other side of the FaceTime call. his handsomely angular face was illuminated by the soft glow of his bedside lamp, and while you were always happy to see him -even if it was only through the screen of your phone- your heart always ended up feeling like it was being clenched by a fist.
Leaned back into the fluffy pillows of your shared bed, you gave him the evil eye.
“Not yet…” you yawned, the phone angled away from your face, letting Jake see the sleeping dog -your dog Jake would say, but if given a choice Hercules would choose Jake every time- laying comfortably with his head on Jake’s pillow.
If seeing you didn’t make him feel homesick enough, seeing his best bud was the final nail in the proverbial coffin.
“…just a little while longer,” your voice was muffled by the continuous yawns and the phone’s angle returned to your face, causing a soft grin to form on Jake’s mouth. “I’m not ready to say goodnight yet,” there was a slight pout to your lips. Jake would’ve given his left arm to physically be able to give you a kiss goodnight.
“Then tell me about your day,” Jake replied softly. The yearning he felt at this point in time was particularly rough, so he savored every extra second with you that he could.
“You know the squirrel that takes all of my decorations off of the porch?” Jake hummed the affirmative. “Well, he finally had enough of Herc today and set him straight,” Jake couldn’t help but laugh at the visual of the tiny gray squirrel that lived in their backyard giving the 120 pound Rottweiler well deserved hell. “It was absolute anarchy back there,” you said lightly with a chuckle, not wanting to wake the dog.
“I can only imagine,” the smile never left Jake’s face. your eyes were fluttering and Jake could tell that you were fighting tooth and nail to stay awake. Every breath you took was getting deeper and more spaced out, and he knew he had a minute or two -max. There was a moment of comfortable silence before he whispered “I miss you,”
A sleepy grin lifted your lips and you cracked your bloodshot and tired eyes open. “I miss you too,” you breathed softly, “it hurts how much I miss you,” your voice cracked and Jake’s heart nearly shattered with it. The slight smile he had turned sad in an instant. “We can’t wait to see you,” you angled the phone over to the sleeping dog, purposefully this time.
“Only a few more weeks, baby. A few more weeks and I’m all yours,” Jake had to clear his voice when he heard a sniffle on your end. “Don’t cry, sweetheart, please,” he coaxed gently. “Let me see you,” it took a moment, but you returned to his screen, cheeks glistening from the few tears that escaped. You tiredly wiped under your eyes with the sleeve of the gray Navy sweatshirt you had stolen from Jake before he was shipped out this time around. “There’s my girl,” He said fondly. “Get some sleep, alright? I’m sorry I called so late,”
“I don’t care what time it is. If you call, I’ll answer.”
“I know, I just-” he tried to reason, but was immediately cut off.
“-Just nothing, Jake. If you can call me, call me. Please,” you scolded him lightly. “Hearing your voice or seeing your face makes it worthwhile. And if I get both, then I’m the luckiest lady this side of the Mississippi,” Jake rolled his eyes, but quietly laughed like a good sport at your poor attempt at humor.
“I mean it this time; go to bed, babe. You’re gonna be dead on your feet tomorrow,” Jake tried to reason once more.
“That’s tomorrow me’s problem,” you mumbled into the neck if the sweatshirt. You knew exactly how tomorrow would go, but consequences be damned.
“I love you, and I love Herc. Give him a big ole kiss for me, right on his forehead.” You nodded, feeling your eyes grow heavy once more.
“I love you too, Jake. Stay safe out there, alright? I need you back here in one piece, but I’ll take what I can get,” the poor humor brought the tender smile back to his lips.
“Yes, ma’am,” his response was more of a deep vibration than the actual words, but you took that as a verbal confirmation and that satisfied your worries well enough for now.
“I don’t want to say goodbye,”
“Then I’ll settle for a goodnight,” Jake offered. You nodded, but wouldn’t say the words. God only knew when the next time you would be able to chat like this with him until he was safe at home within the next couple of weeks. “Come on,” he teased.
“Goodnight, flyboy,” Jake’s eyes crinkled in the corners with how brightly he was smiling.
“Sleep tight, sweetheart.”
