Tala, who is 12, was injured in a bombing, sustaining fractures on her third rib and on her right forearm, requiring thoracic and plastic surgery. Mahmoud, who is 2, has cleft palate and needs plastic surgery as well, as cleft palate causes feeding and speech difficulties and surgery is usually done before 2 years old, depending on the child's weight. Tala and Mahmoud are the children of Ahmed's twin brother.
