One of my favorite Revenant's scenes: Car rides with Gu San-Yeong and Yeom Hae-Sang. First, because you can see and feel that their characters and partnership/relationship were evolved throughout the series (first car ride was stiff, full of distrust, last car ride was enjoyable, san-yeong was just like 'i know my way around his car'). Second, just let them banter about which ritual music was deemed as normal and enjoyable for their journey, its never failed to bring smile on my face.
Rewatching Revenant, will post several favorite scenes of this show. It's one of my go-to k-drama horror series to watch when I'm bored, beside The Guest. The use of trio (the vessel, the solver, and the police) to solve murder caused by demonic entity is one of the reason that this show is kinda watchable for me. Kim Tae-Ri and Oh Jung-Se acting was so great that brought this show forward. Lee Hang-Gi's plot is also the highlight that make the story interesting and empathetic. I have other reasons, but my brain is already not braining right now (its 3am, and i have to work at 8), so try to watch it if you haven't, it's good.
Rogue One (2016) dir. Gareth Edwards
Friendly reminder that the Rogue One writers easily could’ve actually killed Cassian with that fall in the data tower and ended the film with Jyn defeating Krennic and transmitting the plans alone just as the Death Star obliterates her. Instead they wrote it so that Cassian climbs up 10+ stories with a broken back to save Jyn from her mother’s murderer and they have a whole moment in the elevator as the last survivors of the Rogue One team (probably the last two people alive in the facility) and then die together in each other’s arms on the beach; in other words, they wrote the most romantic possible ending for them. Absolutely nothing Mr. Gilroy says post-Andor will ever change or undo any of this.
I can't help but feel sad, disappoint and guilt. I remember I was so excited when Andor was being announced, because it's a chance to understand Cassian's arc, that made him this beautiful character in Rogue One. But somehow, after finishing the Season 2 of Andor, I am lost, I can't connect Cassian in Rogue One and Cassian in Andor. It left a bitter taste in my heart.
It doesn't mean that Andor season 2 is bad or anything, there are some beautiful characters and plot that's important. Especially related to Kleya and Luthen's plot to support rebellion. Mon and Leida Mothma arc was really touching. But for me, this season failed to bridging my understanding related to Cassian's character.
It is also sad to know that the creators of Andor deliberately disregard any sources and pointers of Cassian's character that was provided right after Rogue One. Some of us watched Andor because of Rogue One, Cassian in Rogue One is the one that we want to understand. But it's hard to understand the way it is. And don't get me started about our hope to at least hear Jyn's name being discussed. I feel guilty, because I want to be excited for Andor, but I didn't feel it. Because of the ignorance of some creators regarding the original version (Rogue One), I lost the chance to enjoy this show.
Recently I came across an interesting article reviewing the second season of 'Andor'. Below is a translated excerpt from this article: […In the early version of the series developed by showrunner Steven Schiff, K-2SO was used much more actively and essentially served as the second main character. Gilroy found this format too dull and completely rewrote the plot from scratch.
Upon learning that Cassian’s first encounter with his mechanical partner K-2SO had already been depicted in a comic, Gilroy flatly stated: "No, I won’t be using that." However, Andor doesn’t exactly offer a worthy alternative. K-2SO only steps into the spotlight near the series’ finale, Cassian’s decision to take him along feels contrived, and the friendship between the two is, once again, established off-screen. Gilroy might as well have skipped rewriting the comic and simply introduced the droid without any additional buildup, just like many other characters in Rogue One.
Andor has a complicated relationship with Gareth Edwards' film in general. The series tells a mostly self-contained story, and most of its characters don’t even appear in Rogue One. If the creators had wanted to make a full-fledged prequel, the focus should have been on the military officials of the Rebellion and the Empire, the family of the brilliant engineer Galen Erso, and/or the fanatical partisan Saw Gerrera. In reality, the latter doesn’t even get his own arc in the series, he just occasionally shows up as a dark reflection of Luthen Rael and his spy cell, the true protagonists of Andor.
Yet, in the final episodes, Gilroy explicitly steers Cassian toward the events of the film, essentially abandoning the climax of his own story and handing it off to Edwards. The result is an absurd situation. To fully grasp the series' ending (What’s this about Jedha? Who’s Erso? What’s Tivik’s deal?), you need to have already seen Rogue One. And yet, Rogue One now demands a rewatch after Andor, otherwise, the story feels abruptly cut short. Even Rebels, despite being simpler and aimed at a younger audience, handles this balance far more elegantly.]
Finished Watching Andor Season 2
So I've been delaying watching Andor because of immense workloads lately and just finished watching it today. My first impression, although I agree that the second season provide good background story for Rogue One, I feel like I missed the "awe" feeling that I got when I watched first season. Maybe because the slow tension building? May be also because the second season was developed to provide a background story? But I don't get the "awe" that I feel after watching and understanding Nemik's manifesto, rebel's action in Aldhani, Narkina 5 and Ferrix. I don't get it,, it may be just me,,,
Second, before watching this season, I was also hoping that I would see Bix more in rebel cause. But I feel a little disappointed to see how they present Bix's "sacrifice" for the rebellion was by letting Cassian go to fight for the cause, understanding that her presence would hinder Cassian being a good leader. I mean, WTF,, I think Bix was more than capable to fight for the rebellion, she has anger, she has the knowledge and experience to fight. But her fight that we can observe was when she killed the imperial supervisor that torture her,, She didn't have a chance to show that she's more than Cassian's significant others that can also fight side by side with Cassian for the cause. Moreover, I still don't understand the importance of showing Bix with her kid by the end of the episode, I mean, what for? It would not change the ending, as Cassian would be dead in Rogue One. So that Bix's character could be portrayed as a traditional women character that will wait for her significant other to come home while taking care of their kid? That's BS...
Third, I understand that there are some crazy debate regarding Cassian's pairing. For me, I accept both CassianxBix and CassianxJyn. I mean, everybody has history right, why should it be just one ship that's legit (that's why I also disagree to Gilroy's comments regarding Cassian's ship). And we all can see the end of it, that is Cassian would be dead side by side with Jyn, as both comrades and companion. They may have a great relationship if they have more time, but they did not. That's it. So let it rest. Let's just enjoy the story and let's grief and imagine our own favorite alternate ending. I'll try to drown myself in rebelcaptain fanfics (yes, I'm a rebelcaptain stan through and through).
So that's all my rant for today, may provide other after I sleep, it's already 3.36 am here,,,,
I don't belong to anyone. But every time you say my name, why does it feel like I've always been yours?
