Does he mean anything to you
Just this week in games:
- EA laid off 700 workers
- Sony laid of 900 workers
- Rockstar announces in-person work mandates for all employees (a 'soft layoff' that will force some staff to quit, which likely means that actual layoffs are forthcoming)
In 2023 6,000 games workers were laid off. Now in 2024 over 10,000 workers have been laid off, and there's still 10 months to go.
Not to be hyperbolic, but I think this is perhaps the worst year for video games ever if we're measuring by number of layoffs.
PlayStation, Electronic Arts, and Microsoft are the latest companies to announce cuts
I really feel the need to make it abundantly clear to people who are like "yeah this could get really bad" or "could this be a crash?".
I need to emphasize: This is currently incredibly bad and not normal for the games industry. This is currently a post-pandemic crash.
Rolling mass layoffs at every major studio is not standard video game industry behaviour no matter how bad the industry sounds.
The population of an entire town's of people in video games has lost their jobs in the span of two months and that number is growing every week. As a reminder, job hunting in games usually takes upwards of 2 months, depending on how lucky you are, so most of these people are likely still without jobs and may not ever work in games again.
My LinkedIn Feed is a near constant churning of new "I am seeking employment because I just got laid off" posts, by people I know who have worked all over the industry and have plenty of experience. Every week someone I recognize loses their job for no reason.
It's not the end of the world or games or anything, but I need people to understand this is currently a very huge and not normal game industry problem. It's a crash and it's happening.
Not meant to derail, but to underscore how bad it is: this is the entire US tech industry. My LinkedIn feed is 70-80% about layoffs on any given day. And not only that, tech employees are being laid off en masse in other industries. The likes of Nike and Vox Media are laying off designers, engineers, product folks, and other tech-related workers.
These games industry employees are being dumped into a market where it will not only be difficult to find jobs in their field, it will be difficult to find a job in a related sector where their skills are relevant. And that's happening basically anywhere there are tech workers. Jobs for non-tech workers in the tech industry (eg marketers, customer service) are also drying up very very fast.
I know full-stack devs whose unemployment has run out and former C-suite folks having to submit their resume to temp agencies. Mass layoffs of white-collar workers on this level should be an economic red flag, and we are not panicking enough about it. Yes, these folks are still better off than the average hourly service employee getting laid off, but in terms of what it says about the economy, I feel like the government is trying to keep this looming crisis quiet so The Job Numbers can continue to be favorable for the President.
And in terms of what it says about culture, it's also bleak: it means companies are leaning into AI, automation, and third-party tech (as opposed to a bespoke tech stack built and maintained in-house). It means technology is going to get worse and less secure everywhere, and there will be less incentive to try to improve it.
The way this will be felt in the games industry is catastrophic for people who love video games. It's going to be like the film industry, where a few big studios continue to churn out unchallenging, derivative, boring content using the same visual effects and the same predictable writing as everyone else, bc that's what sells reliably.
As op said, this is a crash. As with every other industry right now, tech is consolidating around a few giants and a few ways of generating revenue, and everything else is getting shut out. Not to be that guy, but this is what Late Capitalism looks like. The bottom is falling out of the economy, and it feels like gaslighting every single day to have to stare at stuff like this and pretend we can go on as normal.
"how was work" carries the same energy as "how was school"
This is my favorite meme thing I've seen for that:
Vultures are holy creatures.
Tending the dead.
Bowing low.
Bared head.
Whispers to cold flesh,
“Your old name is not your king.
I rename you ‘Everything.’”
Just unmute. :')
