Okay team, can I just like, do a little rant here for a minute?
I understand the intention behind this scene. Like I do, I get it. And at first I was like, haha cute funny like whatever yay.
But then I was kinda like, man this actually really blows a little.
This is like... kind of a really important moment in the whole Spider-man/Deadpool relationship. Whether you wanna think of it romantically or platonically doesn’t really change that fact.
There. Like. RIGHT THERE. Peter actually felt like he trusted Wade enough with his face and his identity. That means a lot. That’s really freaking important. He even voices the suspicion that Wade should have known his real identity all along. What with the whole, “You have that Peter Parker on a pedestal” dealy that happened back in issue 8. Well, actually the whole first arc in general.
And Spidey is trying. Like he is REAAAALLY trying here to open up to Wade and strengthen their relationship. And they are writing Deadpool like Movie Deadpool. Who literally cannot take anything seriously. Ever. But we KNOW that Wade has more depth than that. And we know how important his relationship (whether as a mentor or a friend) to Spidey is. Wade literally murdered someone to save Spidey’s soul. Even if it really cost him dearly.
And by turning this moment into another “fourth wall” thing, they effectively just kind of threw back the trust and vulnerability in Peter’s face. He says it right there, “Wade, I’m trying to have a moment.”
I understand that in universe, Deadpool is not “allowed” to know who Spider-man is. I get that, and that’s totally fine. He apparently (in the future) will find out one day, anyway, according to future old men Wade and Peter. But why would you create this whole farcical situation, have Peter open up and trust Wade just for it to end like that?
Just don’t include it at all, is my point. Leave the whole thing out. Yeah now we get to see that Spidey trusts Wade. Great. But once again, Wade ends up as the crazy, insane butt of the joke, and Peter ends up in frustrated resignation.
Also, the whole theme of this “we’re in a comic book” is starting to grate on my nerves. Yeah, Deadpool “gets it”. He’s in a comic book. It’s funny in moderation. But to make it the whole point of the entire thing is starting to get old. And yes, they are trying to use it as a tool to develop their relationship. But it just ends up coming across as Peter babysitting a delusional maniac. And not in a fun way.
