mello is honestly such an interesting character. his determination to be the best and his resentment toward near is just the beginning of his complexity and that's what makes him so great.

in the anime, he's depicted to be more... human than near, and i think that's such an important detail. i would even go as far as to say that he's probably one of the most relatable characters in the manga because of it (although, i might just think that because i am a professional mihael glazer). you get to watch him pretend to be colder than he actually is, and you can see that he's not as cold-hearted as he makes himself seem in the way small ways that he tries to help others, even in his little... predicament.

and it really tells you more about his determination. the only reason he forces himself to act cold in the first place is because of near and how badly he wants to be better than him. even then, even after crafting a whole personality dedicated to getting him to be the best or prove that he’s better, he fails because his humanity prevails through it. and yet he still tries. even after matt dies, even after he knows he’s lost, he still tries to hide himself until he dies in a church—a place meant to be the one place you let your guard down, the one place that you’re supposed to be completely and thoroughly yourself. funny, right?

mihael is such a great example of the consequences and drawbacks being human has in the death note universe. it’s something much more raw than light’s man-made illness, and something so much deeper than L’s isolation (in my opinion, but i’m likely biased).

this may be such a nothing-burger of a post but.. it’s all i’ve got right now!
