So, the local art school has adult classes on Tuesday nights- 6 week sessions. They are a little expensive but they're taught by faculty members, so you know, you pay for professionals. There's a couple I'd be interested in. Can I talk myself into doing this? That's the $64,000 question...

I mean, I love learning things. And I do learn best in class settings. And doing art/making things is good for my brain. And I do have enough in savings to cover a class, so that if it doesn't work out, I'm not going to be hurting financially. I'm more concerned about convincing myself to go halfway across town for 2.5 hours on a Tuesday night. And the social anxiety, of course. But probably it would be good for me...

Me when I contact IT and tell them yes I restarted and followed any instructions I could but computer still angry and IT says they are escalating this because it is an actual issue: I am getting a good grade in service desk ticket. Something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

Still watching C2 and the ad where Sam is really creepily listing off things he's a fan on came on and he says "I'm a fan of wine older than Taliesin," which struck me as amusing, since according to IMDb, Sam's several months older than Taliesin.

(I do know the joke is that Taliesin is an immortal and that's what Sam's referencing. But it amused me anyway)

(Yes, I looked up these people's ages because when I first started watching, I was like, wait, these folks have got to be my age, because their references are all too perfect. And yeah, I'm in that Xennial/Late Gen X/Early Millennial age group with most of them. I'm really not a stalker type, it just made me go, "huh!")

people who are like "but with universal healthcare you'll have to pay taxes!!! Up to 8%!!!" Are so funny. Like as opposed to the 16% of my gross paycheck that goes to private insurance, that won't cover shit unless i call my insurance company, then my doctor, then my pharmacy, then my doctor again because theyre pretty sure insurance got approved then my insurance company because they didn't get the letter, then my doctor again, then the pharmacy again, and then the copay i still am on the hook for.

watching my husband get diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea over the last year was not the thing that radicalized me re: weight and healthcare but my goodness it has solidified my stances.

sleep apnea is more common in people who are fat.

society decided for some reason that this meant that being fat causes sleep apnea. its often difficult to get referrals for sleep apnea treatment if you are fat, because some PCPs will tell you try losing weight first.

turns out!! having untreated sleep apnea causes weight gain in a not-insignificant number of people. it also makes it fucking impossible for many people to lose weight.

my husband worked out the same amount before he got a cpap as he does now. there have been no major diet changes either. yet he has been losing weight -- and gaining muscle tone -- consistently since he started using a cpap in january.

also, his blood pressure -- which was high, which docs blamed on his weight/diet -- went down significantly within one month of starting cpap treatment, before his weight changed significantly.

ANYWAYS. this is getting long. two final thoughts.

- if you are exhausted constantly for "no reason", and especially if you snore, you should probably ask your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea. it is extremely common -- estimates are around 1 in 10 people -- and is also wildly under-diagnosed. like, some estimates suggest that 80% of people with moderate-severe sleep apnea are undiagnosed.

We are still here, as human beings, because millions and millions of us - since far, far longer ago in our history than recorded time - have looked at the world, and said "I want my children, and my children's children, to have a better life than I did."

Maybe your parents and your grandparents and great-grandparents were among those people - or maybe they weren't, personally. Some people admittedly aren't.

But every human alive is part of an uninterrupted line of hundreds of thousands of years of descent (and that's only since we became Homo sapiens).

We, as humans, have created and built and invented and learned and treated and cured so, so much. Because we kept looking around us, and looking at the people around us, and saying, "I want a better world for the people I love. I want a better world for the people who will come next."

Or perhaps think about it this way:

Would you want your great-grandchildren (or the great-grandchildren of your loved ones / family / chosen family, if you'd rather) to be miserable?

Or would you want those children to take care of themselves, and be kind to themselves, and do their best to find peace and joy in their lives?

Recently my dad handed me my granddad's pit token to pass on to my brother when I next see him.

The pit token (and locker key) was something my grandad had when he worked in a coal mine. Every day he would have it over and receive his safety lamp, and go down the pit to mine coal. At the end of the day if there were any tokens left on the board then they'd know that there was still someone in the pit.

My grandad was an intelligent man. He was politically motivated, wrote letters to the local MP, read countless books about many subjects, listened to a wide variety of music, etc. But he worked down that pit for years to pay for a house and home for three kids. He broke his back down that pit. When his best friend died he locked himself in his shed with a bottle of rum cause obviously Men Don't Cry and he couldn't be seen. He fought in world war 2 and killed men in battle, and he never spoke about it unless asked.

My brother has a masters. He attends therapy. Has his own son now, and he worries about the world. He works in an office, and while he would like to do something he is passionate about rather than admin, I don't think my granddad would ever begrudge the kind of man my brother has grown up to be even if he didn't fully understand it. He wouldn't wish that pit on anyone.

I really, really need to remember that when I decide I'm too tired to take a shower and I wasn't outside and won't be on camera or seeing anyone the next day anyway so it really doesn't matter, that by lunchtime the next day I *will*, in fact, want to claw my hair off my head because it is dirty.
