Just watched Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel.

It's so terrible to know that Elisa Lam died tragically, alone with her troubled thoughts about her life and her worth, physically, emotionally, mentally and socially alone.

Mental health is a subject most shy away from, some, unfortunately even dismiss it as "just a phase" or "she'll eventually get over (whatever it is)" or "she's just sad". "She just wants attention."

If there's anything I learned from this documentary, it's that loneliness kills: Could her death be prevented if someone was with her, guiding her to take her medications on time? If she just needed someone to talk to when she had no one? People with mental illness have imbalanced hormones. That's an evidence based fact already. More than medications, she most likely needed cognitive behavioral therapy, and more importantly, SOMEONE to talk to or just SOMEONE at that precise time to have possibly alerted her physicians or family that she was in a psychological crisis?

We all know that she was a diagnosed Bipolar. Her diagnosis meant that she literally had manic and depressive episodes - ups and downs. When she was okay, she functioned well. But when she was down that's where Tumblr came in. She felt as if she was baring her soul here. As if tumblr and her thousands of faceless audiences was listening to her when she felt like nobody would understand her and why she needed to take those pills daily. She would say on her tumblr that she was depressed.

The problem with the internet is that many think that it has no consequences. But the internet keeps receipts. At the moment she typed "I'm depressed", that should have raised alarms to anyone who would've seen that post. At this point, the internet has consequences and we are all responsible for apathy and indifference.

No one knows her last moments were like - surely terrible, horrible, dark, alone, isolating. But I hope we take something away from her story. Talk to someone. Don't stigmatize people with mental illness. They don't want your attention because they're "crazy", but because they need our help.

A little understanding can go a long way. Regrets come last. So talk to someone who you think needs help. It goes a long way.
